goldfish80: LWKMD. Who pays these guys to write these? I asked this before. That Usman Mohammed's write up is hilarious. Usman Mohammed was not the only one who suffered in the absence of Azubuike. The whole team did. It destabilized the balance of the team. Throughout the history of this Coach Siasia's Dream Team, Azubuike was a constant. Playing against a well prepared German side would affect everyone. I am not much of a fan of player ratings by these guys because they leave out a lot. I am tired of hearing the players were poor. The Question is why were they poor in that game. When they can answer that, let me know. That is what I tried to explain long ago. Coach Siasia was naive to think every team will seat back and play him. I pointed that before and after the Colombian game. We played this match with higher intensity. Coach Siasia did not make any step to nullify the compact game of the Germans and he expected smooth playing passes. |

TheGoodJoe:If he played as well as you make him out to, the writer who have not seen this back and forth would not have scored him 2/10. |

goldfish80: How can I bury my head after reading such ridiculous write up. That writer is a disgrace. Did you read what he wrote about Popoola? That was thrash and throws a light on how myopic his write up is. That Popoola write up shows the guy's writing is very weak. Popoola made interceptions, completed short passes. Sprayed long accurate balls. Yet that writer said Popoola ran aimlessly on the field. Let them ignorantly point at players performance and not face the fact that we set up the team wrongly. Verdict: Thrash report. |

goldfish80: The writer is writing a certified thrash. There are too many jokes there to take him serious. If he can not see that Sadiq was up against two strong German defenders. Remember when Mikel tried scoring, did you see that Mikel dribbled three players and still another defender blocked the short? That will tell you how compact the German defending was. |

TheGoodJoe:Aren't you contradicting yourself abit? Clearly you rate Sadiq's performance very high but in the same breath you don't want him near the super eagles. Your have to be consistent! |

goldfish80: Read my comments again. Let me explain instead of taking you back. I was impressed with his work rate and pressing. It increased my respect for the young man and I believe we have a bright talent in him. Pressing and continuous pursuit against such organized play is difficult. I have seen top players battle to cope. That is what I was praising. I believe in a better set up, with more support, Sadiq Umar would have performed better. The Bad. He could not meet up with the battle against the defenders when it was time for the offence. He could not handle the compact play of the Germans. If you look at the set up from back to front, Sadiq was the only one who spent most times without support. Mikel was battling the Bender Twins. So naturally, I will not expect Sadiq to light fire works in that set up. I already disagreed with the set up. Long balls to such a set up made it worse. I believe a more experienced player like Ibra, Lukaku would cope better. Not excel. So I think with more experience and playing time he can deal better with the pressure. Was Sadiq Umar awesome? No. Does he need improvement? Yes. Did he work hard? Yes. Did he give his all? Yes. |

goldfish80: When Michael Laudrup coached Mallorca, he faced Guardiola's Barcelona. He opted for a high pressing system to counter the Catalans. Mallorca played very well. The players gave good account of themselves but lost three Zeros. It is unfair pointing out the bad without mentioning the good. Sadiq Umar had some poor highlights but had some very impressive points. Also in a better set up with more support, he would have done better. |

TheGoodJoe:You didn't mention his footwork which left alot to be desired. The Ibra and Lukaku you mentioned have very good foot work and movement around the box. I hope for his own sake he does not evolve into an old fashioned, batry ram, defensive striker like Emile Hesky. The game has evolved beyond that brand of strikers. |

TheGoodJoe:they played in a more controlled manner because the sub was worse, they were even playing a calm game with Sadiq around. Anyways even when you think that Tevez is pressing like a headless chicken, he always presses from one particular side thereby cutting off one part of the defence from the other. Sadie was just running around, I will try to get his heat maps from the game so you will understand my point then compare it with that of Tevez |

TheGoodJoe:for me as well Popoola did nothing after he came on. I doubt if we created one good chance after he came on. I might blame it on tiredness but he wasn't close to being good in that game at least, just my own view though, I might be wrong about him because Sadiq already had me swearing at my TV before he came on, so my thinking was no longer straight then |

Just to paint a good picture of how Sadiq tried, someone went to the extent of comparing Nigeria as westham and Germany as Bayern. |

Winning or losing this third place match changes nothing. As long as they didn't win gold, they can come home empty handed for all I care. After all, who bronze epp ![]() |

BascoVanVeli:it's better we don't even collect bronze cos if we do, our 'wonderful' sport minister will say it's a sign of improvement from London 2012. |
| Re: All The News About The Olympic Eagles (U-23) HERE! by joseph1013(op): 10:52am On Aug 20, 2016 |
TheGoodJoe:Your defense of the team's poor performance is weak. You say the team played the best they could play in the game, but when told that Siasia said they did not play to instruction, you say it's a lie and that the coach is responsible for their inability to complete simple passes. Now you are here saying that Popoola completed short passes and sprayed long balls. If others could not complete short passes and Popoola could in your view, is that still the fault of the coach or due to the brilliance of the Germans? I've chosen not to criticize Umar Sadiq because he's still a kid who is going through a lot, and I will leave it at that, but saying he played anything in that match is stretching the truth. |

king94:Wouldn't he have said the same if we won gold? The boys deserve at least a medal for their efforts. It is not about any minister. |
| Re: All The News About The Olympic Eagles (U-23) HERE! by TheGoodJoe(m): 11:19am On Aug 20, 2016 |
joseph1013: It is a blatant lie saying Sadiq Umar did not play anything in the match. Anyone saying that is blocking himself from the fact that that guy was alone up front pressing three to four defenders when the ball reached the back. Sometimes, he pressed to the goalkeeper. That was how one of the chances came. Sit down, think of the work the boy put into those runs. For a young kid, that was good. Saying he played nothing is ridiculous. As for Popoola, he was effective. He completed passes. Usman Mohammed made some sideways passes. Ekong completed passes. Are you saying our players did not complete passes at all. Haba. They were mistakes. They were not all mistakes. |
| Re: All The News About The Olympic Eagles (U-23) HERE! by TheGoodJoe(m): 11:24am On Aug 20, 2016 |
goldfish80: How many times was Sadiq Umar free to control the ball. Even Mikel came under pressure a lot of times when the ball came to him. Sometimes they were three men. You can not expect crisp control in these situations. Earlier it was even though for Mikel. It was later in the game Mikel picked up. So I noticed the controls, the miss dribbles and poor decision. I am pointing out the set up made it tough for Sadiq Umar. With the challenges, he showed courage and heart to fight until he gassed. When Ajayi came in and vanished, you will not ask if he could control or dribble. Ajayi was lost in the German sea. For you to see Umar reach the ball, took a lot of hard work from the boy. That is what I am writing. |

Mickael2: Probably the poor display pissed you off and you did not value what came after the display. Popoola sprayed long balls, handled pressure, retrieved the ball, there was even a point the German players pressed him and he made a pass to the back. A long one to Amuzie. The guy did well. I only remember him losing the ball on few occasions. Definitely a plus in the game. |

| Re: All The News About The Olympic Eagles (U-23) HERE! by TheGoodJoe(m): 11:39am On Aug 20, 2016 |
Mickael2: I get your point but in most of the games Tevez played for Sir Alex Ferguson, the teams were dominated by Manchester United, the pressing can be controlled. Most of my praise of Sadiq Umar was down to effort. The odds were stacked against him but he gave his all. It was his effort and passion. His running and covering grounds was impressive. Just as you talked about Sadiq Umar not being a pacy player. That was what makes what Sadiq Umar did impressive. He was playing off his comfort zone. He covered long distances in a short time. In my earlier comment, I added Mikel into the picture because these guys gave their all. Yes we had lots of problems (which I blame the set up) but despite all these, I saw these guys fighting. That was why before the tournament started, I said something like these are not the best players we had but these guys were fighters. Even Ndifreke Udo was on. Most criticism hurled at them were on the ball performances. What of when the Germans were in possession. These guys were like madmen of the field and they get my respect. Thanks for your brilliant additions. |

Nigeria aim for 'golden' bronze https://africanfootball.com/bp_images/2016/08/mikelsadiq.jpg Mikel, Sadiq Umar celebrate for Nigeria at Rio Olympics Twenty years after Nigeria made history by becoming the first African country to win Olympic football gold in Atlanta, they are today in line to clinch a “golden” bronze at the Rio Olympics. It will be a “golden” bronze for Nigeria as this may well be the only medal the 85-strong contingent to Rio 2016 will come away from Brazil after hopes in wrestling and athletics went up in smoke. That is an improvement on the country’s showing in London four years ago, when the contingent did not medal. But even the bronze in the football event is not guaranteed for “Giant of Africa’ Nigeria as they will have to battle the surprise packet of the tournament Honduras to get on the podium. The Central Americans are in the losers’ final after they tore apart the form books by going through a qualifying group that included 2008 Beijing Olympics champions Argentina, Portugal and Algeria. In the quarterfinal they upset London 2012 bronze winners Korea 1-0 to qualify for the semi-finals against hosts Brazil, where they suffered a heavy 6-0 hammering with heroic goalkeeper Luis ‘Buba’ Lopez badly exposed by the firepower of the Samba stars. The 22-year-old ‘Buba’ was his country’s third-choice goalkeeper at the 2014 World Cup, also in Brazil. He was outstanding in the group game against Portugal which they lost 2-1, before his out-of-this-world performance against Korea in Belo Horizonte, where his team will again do battle for a place in history with Nigeria. “Every player is important, but we have to be thankful to Buba,” said coach Jorge Luis Pinto, not a man noted for singling out individual players for praise, after the Korea match. “He was special tonight, extraordinary, and I told him so. Part of this is his. With a great goalkeeper we can do great things." It is this man Nigeria will now hope to beat to complete their collection of Olympic medals having won Gold in 1996 and silver in 2008. Coach Samson Siasia, who led the country to the Gold medal final in China eight years ago, has said he will be happy to settle for third place in Brazil. He said: “We still have something to play for. We didn’t deserve to win against Germany with the way we played, so we should just forget about it and look forward to the next one and at least we will try to have the bronze medal going back home.” Siasia will welcome back from suspension defensive midfielder Azubuike Okechukwu, who was sorely missed against Germany in the semifinal, and there is a remote chance the team’s leading scorer Oghenekaro Etebo could pass a late fitness test to add to the firepower of the African champions. Kick-off time is 5pm Nigerian time today. http://africanfootball.com/news/639493/Nigeria-aim-for-golden-bronze |

Azubuike's return lifts Nigeria, Etebo for late fitness test https://africanfootball.com/bp_images/2016/08/mikel_azubuike.jpg Azubuike Okechukwu (left) with Mikel Midfielder Azubuike Okechukwu’s return after serving out his one-match suspension has gingered Nigeria ahead of Saturday’s Rio Olympics third-place match against Honduras. Assistant coach Monday Odigie also disclosed injured Oghenekaro will have to pass a late fitness test to be available for the bronze medal game Both players and officials admitted they missed hard working defensive midfielder Azubuike against Germany who spanked the African champions 2-0 in the semi-final on Wednesday. “Azubike I can confirm to you will play against Honduras in Saturday’s third-place match because his card suspension is over,” Odigie said. “His contribution was missed against Germany and his return to the team would definitely solidify the midfield against Honduras.” However, the media-shy coach will not confirm the return of team’s highest goal scorer Etebo for the Honduras game. “As regards Etebo’s availability for the Honduras game sincerely speaking I can’t tell you anything for now because we need to see how he comes up in practice,”Odigie said. He also gave the cheering news that the mood of the players is very high and they are raring to go against the Honduras team. “The boys are well aware of the fact that picking the bronze medal of the tournament will definitely compensate for their hard work in this tournament,” he said. “So, they are all in high spirits to give their best in the third-place match tomorrow (Saturday).” http://africanfootball.com/news/639445/Azubuikes-return-lifts-Nigeria-Etebo-for-late-fitness-test |

: Ekong was poor in Nigeria’s first game in Rio but has been one of the best players as the competition progressed. Worked like a horse, looked solid and dominated the defense.
