I'm asking this question because my plan is to come over to the USA after my masters in the UK and I intend to get married before going there. More reason I'm looking at starting PhD in 2018 and not 2017.
N:B My fiance has a 1:1(saying this so you could weigh her chances and give appropriate advice) and by 2018, even if she starts masters in Nigeria here she wouldn't have been through by fall.
I need your candid advice on this. Cos the truth is, I plan on staying aback there after my PhD to work and gain a lot of practiccl and research experience. Probably get a a post doc placement self.

LagosismyHome was correct that she can't work. Your F2 dependent wife can school while she is here but this is how it goes. She will have to get admission first then file for adjustment of status without any need to go to Nigeria or attend any interview. Square65 is an example here. His wife was here initially on F2 but now, both are graduates in US. The Indian colleagues are another examples. When husband was F1, wife would be on F2 (dependent). Before husband's status changes to F1-opt and wife quickly change to F1. When husband's F1-opt finishes and still doesn't get H1B or greencard, he drops to F2 and start depending on his F1 wife or he simply goes for another studies.

There are ways they contact each schools for verification of transcripts either via email or phone or mailing through courier or postal mail..

The F2 is allowed to stay when the F1 husband is on opt. As you know F1-opt may be shorter than F1, so in order to have enough time to remain legal in US, the wife goes for F1 when the F1 husband is close to starting F1-opt. I know of this Indian guy who's wife started F1 when he had already started the opt and his IT job refuses filing for his H1B.

Student Optional Practical Training. It's a year period after studies. Extendable if only you are able to secure opt job in your field of study. But the saddest thing is that majority are unable to secure jobs in their fields during the initial 1 year.

Don't mind the Indian guy that I mentioned. His wife started switching status late because the guy thought his IT company would file for him while he was busy spending money and traveling to India. Probably he's back in school now or got a company to file for him.

Feel free to ask your question anytime. Initial opt duration is 12 months, if your field is among the "stem" and you're able to secure job that's directly related to your major area of study during the initial opt year, you would be able to apply extension for another 17 months. The 36 months might be because of new changes to the exercise.

My Short travel experience

I took off from Lag with Qatar on 11th, 2:30pm Nigeria time.
We stopped at Doha and 2 hours after we kicked off to new york. 13 hours journey no be moi moi. They kept giving us food and drinks... Meanwhile pls and pls, when those oyibo FA ask what you want, make sure you hear well oooooo. because I heard rice in what they mentioned I quickly jumped to rice cos I believe nobody can go wrong in making rice not knowing its a vegetarian food.
They usually have two foods:one veg and one non veg. And they give you want. I drank enough Juice and cola to compensate their nonsense food. There are thousands of movies to watch.
I heard Ethiad dey serve peppersoup(someone should confirm tho)

Whoever brought the fear of POE should be flogged and jailed. DO NOT PANIC!!!





They don't even have time to drill you cos they know you had a long journey. they are just doing their job. I didn't spend more than five mins with the official. Showed them my passport, 1-20, scanned my finger prints and prolly took my pix and off I went.

And America is organized. In fact those people no like stress. Everything was spelt out in the airport. You can't get lost and even if you do, ask question. It was in Naija airport that the search was real but other airports had scanner or so. They didnt use their hands to search our carry ons.

Finally going to America was a mixed feeling. I wasn't excited and I wasn't sad either but I just knew it was a "start of something good".

So I would caution you that adjusting can often take longer than simply having her return to an embassy and applying for an F1 - just something to think about...

That why me i recommend students checking other options such as applying for Canada PR when they are students in the US so at least u have a definte path to citizenship outside of Naija and if u miss d USA so much u go back later as a Canadian which is an easier work permit TN visa..... instead of this round and round and round and can be back to square one with nothing.

Nothing stops you at all . I am rusty now in the requirement as it changes with time but you can check this website and see what you qualify under and what the requirements are . If you meet the requirement then you just make an application as a backup .

In my time it was a very common thing for Naija people (it was so easy back then to apply and get it so most students applied in first semester self ) and it came in very handy later on if h1B did not materialize or if h1B did not cross over to GC then people just port to Canada and some applied got it and never used it (like myself) but at least they had it as backup . It think its not so easy as before but you can check it out
