Kaplan does not simulate the real GRE experience: it is considerably easier than the real exam.

Use Powerprep, Manhattan online tests, and Magoosh.

hello people, been following this thread for a while now and the quality of information here has been top notch. I am planning on writing GRE this November God willing. I want to apply into a phd program in electrical engineering direct from BEng and it has been advised that we contact professors that research in our area of interest. I don't have past research experience in my area of interest infact my final year project was on something almost totally different. how do I make myself look attractive to those professors to even reply the mail I will eventually send. please help out with advises.

I don't have past research experience in my area of interest infact my final year project was on something almost totally different. how do I make myself look attractive to those professors to even reply the mail I will eventually send. please help out with advises.

Summary: Search, and find ways to convince each professor that you will be a great addition to his research lab. Better still, find a way to see how the skills you acquired in your research project can be transferred to you desired field in EEE.

And, getting profs to reply your mails, and assist you is a numbers game. You win some, you lose some. Here are my thoughts on contacting them.

I have observed that grad school coordinators are more apt to reply promptly compared to faculty members. And the higher their rank, the lesser the chance they'll get back to you. I e-mailed 6 of them, only one Prof replied me consistently. Others went blank. Though I started during the summer break.

- It may be that the profs are not currently accepting new students
- Or that they got your mail, are interested in replying, but just plainly forgot to do so!
- Or they may feel you've not understood their research interests enough for them to pay attention to you, and reply you
- Or your mails just got dumped in the spam folder, since they are cold emails

Whatever it may be, I've discovered that most are situations completely outside our control.

This worked for me though. A sample of the first email I sent.

Subject: I'm highly interested in (your request) in your (Prof's field) lab

Prof's Name:

Hello Sir/Ma,

My name is XXXX, and I have completed SO SO SO degree from XYZ school.

I'm highly interested in joining your research lab focused on developing and optimizing cutting-edge approaches to delivering drugs and genes in humans for better living conditions.

I'm currently working at AAA (briefly explain your profile here, and how you think you'll be beneficial to him/her).

I completed my BSc with a (GPA), and (your brief achievements, one line at most).

I'm passionate about SO SO , and would love to (what you want to know/ask) + (Indicate a sense of urgency to show seriousness).

Thanks for your anticipated and favourable response.

Silence! No response.

So, I sent the same email four days after, also on a week day, with a Re: I'm highly interested in (your request) in your (Prof's field) lab subject, and started with this note.

Hello Prof ABC,

Hope you're doing great? Just sending you a gentle reminder on the request for contact for research studies at ABC.

[Former email]

Closing: I'm sure you must be really busy, and I don't want to seem interrupting.

Hope you can find a few minutes on this. I appreciate your reply.

Regards.

Alert! I got a reply that same day, and she's been responding since then.

All the best!

@happyday Thanks a lot for your prompt reply.
It was advised that we write GRE and TOEFL to increase our chances considering that schools require TOEFL for TA positions, prepping for GRE and TOEFL at the same time I believe would be really difficult. Would studying for GRE verbal and AWA section give enough knowledge to write TOEFL and pass? If not what strategy can be implemented to study for both GRE and TOEFL at the same time?

In my opinion, the Reading Comprehension and AWA share similar styles with the Reading and Writing section of the TOEFL. However, the Listening and most especially the Speaking sections of the TOEFL need special prayers preparation.

I tried solving a question in barron, the quantitative section the part about geometry. The question states that "what is the measure of the angles in degrees formed by the minute and hour hands of a clock at 1:50? " with utmost confidence i solved it and got 90 degrees but was surprised to find out the answer is 115 degrees.
Read the explanation but i still dont understand it. Please does anyone have a clearer explanation to the way this question is solved?

I'm sure in your sketch, you drew the minute hand exactly at 10 and the hour hand exactly at 1 (thereby inferring that the two hands are exactly 15 minutes apart) and thus solved 15/60 = x/360 which gives x = 90 (where x is the angle in question).

However, on an actual clock, at 1:50, the minute hand would be exactly at 10 but the hour hand would be closer to 2 than 1 (meaning that they are about 19+ minutes apart. Using 19, should be solved as 19/60 = x/360 which gives x = 114.

My best guess.

Thanks a lot that was the mistake I made. I later found a YouTube video that explains it. search "calculating angles formed by the hands of a clock". like you said at 1:50 the minute hand of the clock is at exactly 10 but the hour hand is closer to 2. To find the degree between 1 and the hour hand, we take 50mins and divide by 60 then multiply the result (5/6) by 30. This will equal 25. then 25 is now added to the remaining 90 degrees making the answer 115.
if the time was to be 2:50, the minute hand is exactly at 10 but the hour hand is closer to 3, so we take 50/60 and multiply the result(5/6) by 30. This will equal 25. 25 is now added to 120 and the ans will be 145.
YouTube really is a good study companion.

NO, Don't study for the GRE and TOEFL, at the same time. It's time-wasting, inefficient and needless, to me. Yes, you need both to boost your chances, and by all means, prepare your mind to take both. But TOEFL tests your everyday English skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. For what it's worth, if you've been able to thrive in a decent Nigerian university (where, of course, English language is the medium of instruction), then you're ready to study in any English environment. In fact, some schools waive the TOEFL requirement for us.

But, like you said, if you want to get a TA, they need to be certain that you'd able to cope with teaching students in American settings.

- Focus, plan and take the GRE first. Score very well on all sections.

- Then, spend the next two weeks on TOEFL prep. You'd only need to take TOEFL practice tests, to be familiar and also see what's being tested on the listening and speaking sections.

Hello house.. I'm having a problem with ETS.. I registered for my GRE exam successfully last month, and a confirmation was sent to my email.. But lately when I tried to check my GRE account on ETS website, the portal says "NOT FOUND".. What could have happened,?.. Hope it not gonna affect my upcoming test date?..

And who knows the ETS email I can channel my complaint to?.. Thanks in anticipation..

Thanks for this information. So I just logged into my account to checkout the diagnostic service. Mehn....as much as I hate the GRE exam, the GRE body itself is just awesome! I doff for them!

So I practically failed all my RC questions!!! Terrible.... Just 2/20 right. Gosh! I seem to do well in SE and like 50% in TC. In total for both verbal sections, I got just 17/40 right. The reason I scored 150 was because I seem to get the highest difficulty questions right. Lol.

For quant, I had 17/20 right in first section and 15/20 right in second section. The second section was tougher and I failed the highest difficulty questions.

Helps to know where to improve on for those considering rewriting. I knew I sucked in RCs and its confirmed that I really suck!!!!! grin

I shared the info because I thought you might find it useful, I somehow forgot to mention you at the end of my post. What is SE and TC? I know RC stands for Reading Comprehension, but I've never heard of those before.
I'm getting scared right now just reading your (score) breakdown, I hope I'll be able to get a better score than before on the Verbal section and AW.

not long ago I finished studying "Solid Geometry" section of Barron gre book, taking the practice questions at the end of the chapter I did terribly, scored 7/15. now I went through the solutions and I understood it and saw my faults but then in the real exam, one gets only one shot per sitting. is there any step by step procedure that can be used to simply the problems given and how relevant is the topic itself during the exam, in other words do questions come out regularly under this topic?
