not long ago I finished studying "Solid Geometry" section of Barron gre book, taking the practice questions at the end of the chapter I did terribly, scored 7/15. now I went through the solutions and I understood it and saw my faults but then in the real exam, one gets only one shot per sitting. is there any step by step procedure that can be used to simply the problems given and how relevant is the topic itself during the exam, in other words do questions come out regularly under this topic?
Your best option is to practise as much as possible, questions come from different topics, there's no predertermined pattern.

Lovely scores! Wow! I would never rewrite if I had these scores even with 3.5AW. Pls dash me na? wink
If ETS would allow me, you'd have to pay double the price though. Another reason I'm rewriting is the difference in cost between sending four score reports and taking a new test, it was around 18K when I registered

Give it time, you would soon perfect the act of avoiding silly mistakes. wink

I read the practice book
https://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/practice_book_GRE_pb_revised_general_test.pdf
and took a couple of sample tests on the Verbal and Quantitative sections, I never had to prepare the way most people do probably because I knew a few things about the topics the test was based upon. Now, it seems the test is harder so I have to do more than take practice tests.

Great scores bro!

But why rewriting pls? Did you apply to any school and you weren't given TA because of your AWA score or something?

I'm panicking already cos before now I've regarded the AWA section as not-so-important but surprisingly most people seem to be rewriting cos of the AWA section.

Thanks for your anticipated response.

^Good to know The official ets booklet and lots of practice was enough to get such scores.

@icool thanks a lot.
I installed an app currently from app store. I opened the app and under the writing section, all the AWA topics(I stand to be corrected) with sample responses were there. Please can someone download and see how quality the AWA sample responses are. the app is called gre test prep

Hi guys, am kinda new here and to all this GRE stuff. i'm planning to apply for a grad program in the US next year and hoping to take the GRE general test by november, i have checked the exam dates and venues. Now, my first question is this

REGISTERING AND PAYING FOR THE TEST
1. Should i register and pay online for the test myself? I have a VISA debit card, but what troubles me is the current exchange rate. the price of the test is quoted at $205. Using CBN rate as of this morning amounts to #62,500 approx. and black market rate amounts to #86,000 approx. So, will i be charged CBN rate or black market rate?

2. OR should i register through those bodies that i see their adverts everywhere? i called one in PH, he told me the registration fee is 60k including study materials.

3. How is GRE scored? is there a general score or scores are by section? and what score will you boldly say is a good score for a competitive school and course. Thanks for your time.

Scores are by section. You target scores depending on your field and on the caliber of schools you are looking at. But generally for science/engineering courses, I would say target V155+, Q160+, AW4+, and vice versa on Q and V for non-science courses.

1. Your best bet is to go with your bank. The VISA debit card was issued by which bank? Better still, try to register with any cash in the account. If it's enough, the bank will send you an email on how much the you'll need to pay for the $205. I've heard N335 -350/$ though.

2. No, see No. 1.

3. In 3 sections; And yes, scores are sent per section. No general scores.
Quant section: out of 170
Verbal section:out of 170
Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA): out of 6.0.
Boldly? Quant:170/170; Verbal: 170/170; AWA: 6/6 . . . lol.

Scores above 165 on each section + 5.0 AWA should be safe bets anyway.

Hello house.. I'm having a problem with ETS.. I registered for my GRE exam successfully last month, and a confirmation was sent to my email.. But lately when I tried to check my GRE account on ETS website, the portal says "NOT FOUND".. What could have happened,?.. Hope it not gonna affect my upcoming test date?..

And who knows the ETS email I can channel my complaint to?.. Thanks in anticipation..

Please, I want to ask.

Can i actually make high scores while studying on my own, or is it better to get a tutor?

I really need high scores, and i would appreciate assistance from people who have taken it. I want to know the short cuts, the rules, and how to avoid some silly mistakes.

Thanks guys,

GRE Coach,

Kindly assist. I would love to take the test in 2 months time. However, i would appreciate your guidance, especially in quantitative. I am not very gifted in maths. Thank you.

GREcoach:
I currently teach both Analytical Writing, Verbal as well as Quantirative Reasoning targeted at the GRE.

Im aware that the odds against the average Nigerian Student are quite unevenl distributed due to the inconsistent internet access as well as other factors.

GRE hit me a a time when really had no fall back option, hence i gave it my best and went all out within my limited preparation time. i was able to acheive a score above 300 out of 340 (Combaine Quant and Verbal) as well as a score of 4 out of 6 in the Analtical Writing Section.

Haven gotten two Admission offers already, i decided to give back by teaching candidates how to beat ETD gre by preparing he GRE way.

Im open to questions as well as consultations.

Once again pls, this is not a job advert but simply an olive branch to anyone needing help or clarification regarding Blasting the GRE.

Waaaooooh! I like this! Your aims are high, and I think asking before it's time is a pointer that you're closer to your dreams than you realize.
Yeah, sit tight and finish Maths UI with a first class. This is THE MOST IMPORTANT, for now. Maths PhD is not as structured as BS Maths, in that math research is so broad, and you'll be starting out with a blank plate, for you to go figure it out. Whereas in your undergraduate days, you generally have an idea of the proofs, methods and solutions. The best way is to finish among the top 1% of your graduating class, preferably the best graduating.

How?

Treat each class, each test, each assignment, each quiz, each exam, each term paper with all seriousness. With time, that lofty dream of an 8.0 (am I right) will materialize.

And as for preparation for a PhD at top US schools, don't fret about taking tests for now. When it's time, you'll need to take the GRE general test, GRE Math Subject test and TOEFL/IELTS. But, my brother, for now, you need to be focused on that 4-year stint at UI. But to whet your appetite, check these sites for admissions requirements and FAQ for Maths Graduate Adm at MIT.

https://math.mit.edu/academics/grad/admission/index.php

And this is a short FAQ:
https://math.mit.edu/academics/grad/admission/faq

In summary, they want to see that you have:
1. Consistently aced your undergraduate classes (aka 85% and above)
2. Demonstrated interest in Math Research to your lecturers, enough for them to later help you write glowing hot letters of recommendation on your behalf
3. Mastered your coursework excellently enough to score very highly on the GRE Math Subject test (MIT requires this, and yes, it's different from the GRE general test)

And that should do it. You won't have to worry about tuition, once you can get enough funds to apply and fly to the US.
Plus, the choices available to you after PhD are truly limitless.

Good luck!
Hmm! Really inspiring.
