I bet you importers love the fast money. They will ensure no policy works. How? They simply get the loans and go back to importation. I believe there must be a ban first.
Nigerians must learn to produce what we eat. Its safe, its the right this to do.
The previous administration started some stuff, and the preset governemt is making moves too. Let's see what comes out from this year's expected harvests.
U are still Waiting for harvest. Did you plant any Rice.
Answer me.. ....
Hope you are not in dream land. Brace up winter is almost around.
You forgot that most Northern were afraid to farm because of boko haram insurgent.
So where will the harvest come.
For you information we also important bean.
Do you know that we import bean from Burkina faso.

there is no outright ban on rice importation. people are still importing rice through the sea ports. the ban is only on land boarders.
Banning importation of rice through land borders is not too good. In governance at times u give ppl the alternative. The alternative wont be palatable but it will be up to them to decide. For example, just tell them,if they import through the seaport they will pay 1000 naira tax bit if it is through the land borders the tax will be 6000-8000 naira. Automatically you have given them a choice ,some will still be stubborn and use the land borders but then they will pay .while others will continue using the sea ports. All these while the cost of these imported rice will be higher than the local ones. The revenue from the taxation on imported rice will then be used to support local rice farmers and mills

if those rice comes in, we will pay in dollar (the little dollar dah we dont evn av much of) cos business done between two or more nations is measured with approved international currencies like dollar, pounds, etc. when phone importers wanna import fones, they also take frm d dollar cbn save to import d fones. Wen you send ur children 2 sch in foreign country u take outta d dollars. The only way dollar enters in2 our country is if we sell out, and we get paid in dollar by the country we sell to. The only common commodities we sell out dat brings in dollar is crude oil, natural gas n few others. We need to increase the number of things we produce n sell out so dat d dollar comin in can increase.

Nawa o.

The rice has already been paid for.

Do you think the Chinese farmer is still the owner of that rice ? no. Its the importer's money that is tied down.

Will you allow a foreigner ship your goods to another country without first collecting your money as a seller ?

E no easy to be president honestly. This situation presents us with an option that has far reaching consequence on government's policy on locally made products.

Here's the scenario:

You open up the borders, allow the products in, receive duties on them earning the government some revenue, the increased supply means a drop in market price of the commodity, consumers would be happy with that but local producers would suffer losses and the policy and campaign to patronise home made products would suffer some moral setback.

So, what do we do

Its simple.

Open the borders for a short period of 3 to 6 months and then close it permanently. Its just a window for the already imported rice lying at the borders..

I didn't plant rice. I farm other produce. Rice farmers must be encouraged.
Insurgency affected farmers but they are gradually recovering. BH is no longer a threat like it is a year or so ago. Farmers are going back to the farms. The rains have been good.
Are you happy we imported beans. As big as we are? With our population and plentious lands?
Insurgency caused that and Nigeria is overcoming that gradually. Next is for Nigerians to reduce desire for foreign goods. It's not sustainable, it takes jobs away from us and doesn't help our economy apart from the safety/health challenges. Our people are not lazy, with the right government interventions, we can produce.

That idea is faulty. Open it for who and for what. Opening for 3 months can affect our economy for 2 yeas. It was imported to Benin, let them eat it there. Why didn't the importers come through Nigeria. That's the saboteurs we are talking about. Benin received the duties, let them look for what to do with it. They can choose to put them back on ships and send to Naija port.

Apart from the Loo's in duties, have you thouht about the suitabilty of such rice for human consumption? We all can't be farmers. As of 2008, less than 2 percent of the population of usa is directly employed in agriculture and they grow enough for even exports.
I tell you there are several farmers in Nigeria silently praying for a total ban. The problem has always been that we can't compete with foreign imports. But if we do away with them, we will have the opportunity to develop.

your reason is one sided and it is the same excuse many have been repeating and unfortunately the world has gone beyond that and this excuse is about corrupt customs officials. The million dollar question is why cant Nigeria monitor effectively her custom officials? There is absolutely no reason except leadership laziness. Nigeria cant continue taking corruption as an excuse for poverty and underdevelopment. Why cant policy makers formulate a policy that will curb these corrupt officials. The deterrent to crime isn't in warning ppl not to do it but in making sure that ppl realise that they stand 95% chance of been caught. There is corruption everywhere including china but once a government official is caught in corruption he or she is executed. The same people idiagbon used in curbing indiscipline to the barest minimum in the 80s to the extent that the fear of idiafbo who was inblagon and the mere mentioning of his name sent fears and jitters down the spines of the man in sokoto ,nnewi or lokoja ,the same ppl idiagbon used were the same ppl ibb used and institutionalised corruption. Government can do and undo if only they want to . Look at the case of Philippines now.

So you think we will keep local rice in one warehouse and they say oya stop importation, we have rice now. No it doesn't work that way. We must pay the price for our tatse for imported goods. Pay high or go for local, as demands increase for local production will increase. Many more people will go into the production and development. With time we can even compere with imported rice.

$3billion taken out of Nigerian banks and economy resulting in what we're facing today. We should allow them to bring it in, pay the required duties and let the $3billion be repaid back to the banks rather than trap it outside and end up getting wasted.

Govt will definitely extend d ban to sea import but not before there is assurance that local production is sufficient for us..
Meanwhile, local production will by every means cheaper than import due to high duty.. So without govt banning sea import, importers will find it not profitable to bring in rice

It makes no sense to buy local rice @ 10kper bag.
Let me help u out, from experience.
I have a local factory here, but do u know after production, the same imported goods will be cheaper Do u know that?
Why bec the conditions here isn't favourable for production.
Do u know how much it cost a factory per month to buy diesel
Do you know what we go through to import raw materials we produce with
Do u know how much govt collects from manufacturers in nigeria?
If thing should go the right way,do you know local rice will not exceed 3'k
But now we buy it above 9k,is that right
These re the reasons we can't compete.
Is it individuals that will develop the country while the govt does nothing, sits down nd keeps banning things they can't produce....
Don't console yourself in suffering because nigeria has too many fertile lands.....
If govt can be responsible enough only in agriculture sector just for six months, then half of our problems re solved nd there will be no need to say nothing good comes easy.
