Hello Guys,

Took the powerprep test again this weekend, and got a score of 154 for quantitative (I skipped the verbal section as advised by my good friend Amofum, so i can focus more on quant).

I am not there yet, and i still feel bad that i can't make 161 like some people on this platform, but at least, i realize that even though i still have a long way to go, I am not where i was yesterday. Slow and steady... sad

Regards, and thanks to all those who reached out...your words strengthen me.

You shouldn't waste the powerprep tests by skipping any section. In fact, you should endeavour to attempt all sections, including the essay prompts, in one go.

You need to build your stamina. It isn't sufficient to know the answers to the questions. You must be able to endure for the test duration.

For light practice, you can use the questions on the official guides.

Please ,I've been using Kaplan 2016 for preparation. My exam is 3rd of November.

Hope its sufficient for preparation, or I should try other books.

Told ya.

I had an issue tho. I was registered for 3rd Nov and not the 20th Nov date I picked. They said they're going to reschedule for me an early Dec Date; additional cost on them.

Hope prep is going well?

Please how did you do that please ?

I used just the manhattan books and magoosh videos for my prep, I also did the powerprep and some online practice tests and that was more than sufficient for me. The manhattan series helps you to get the basic foundation of all the concepts being tested, then you can just work on the practice questions from other books like princeton and gruber, also a few days to your exam you can watch the magoosh videos to refresh your memory, and please start practising the essays now from the topic pool on ets website because the issue and argument you get will be chosen from there. Wish you the best.

Since you still have some time left, it would be nice if you check out Manhattan books and finalize your prep with ETS official books.

On your ETS page, there would be a Reschedule Appointment button after you register. You can reschedule, but it would cost you an additional $50. In Naira, B.Y Mafit charges 20k for a reschedule. But in my case, since it was their error, they bore the additional cost.

Please if you are applying to STEM and prepping on the GRE,
focus on the GRE Quant section. Most engineering grad schools
know we are terrible at verbal. Do not waste your time!

Hi my dearest sirRiddy, I hope school is cool. I agree and disagree with you. Lol. While we (science/engineering students) are expected to score significantly higher in Quant than Verbal, we still need to put in significant effort in prepping for Verbal. Top to average schools require 155 or higher in V. To even achieve that score of 155, significant prep effort is required except one is already an English pro.

But of course, if one is weak in Q, please focus more but not totally on it.

Lastly, we rarely talk of AW. It is a torn in most people's flesh, including mine. Apart from learning the structure of a good essay and practising at least one of both types, it needs serious prayers. If you get an unfamiliar essay topic on test day and you draw blank, or you misread as I did, that is it - all doom! All guess what? Most schools require at least a 4 to be competitive!

I prayed against unfamiliar topics! cheesy That's the worst that can happen to a test taker - you submit blanks and you are thrown into a bad mood for the remaining test duration.

Yet to see my score, so can't say how effective my method was .

Hi ma'am.
My submission came from a discussion I had with a faculty on Monday morning.
He admitted that the Quant section of the test is the most useful factor when
assessing STEM applicants from third world countries apart fom research experience. They already know your grasp of writing and speaking
skills is sub par given that you are not a native speaker even though you had a 29 on TOEFL, they also
expect a horrible paper from you filled with poor grammar. Of what use is a 158 V score for a STEM
application if you cannot make at worst a 160 in quant? I have a colleague from China who just started learning
English less than a year ago and he is a funded PhD student here. His quant score is 168 and his verbal
is 145. Worst still, his speaking score is 18. But he was still accepted. Of course there is something special
about him, he has a co-authored paper in a top AI conference and has reasonable research experience. He teaches
a lab. Yeah you heard that right, he is a teaching assistant. It takes him like five minutes to speak few sentences
as he has to repeat them and sometimes spell.

I agree with you about the need for 155 plus to stand a chance at top 20 schools. But the reality is that
half of us will not get into those schools. It is not that we are stupid, at least not entirely, but we have
horrible UG GPA. We sabi as e go for our unis here na. The bitter truth is if you are not someone who
is an avid reader 'latile' or very versed with the test, your propensity to improve on verbal is not very auspicious.

My rant summarily is that Quant is way more important than Verbal or even AWA for STEM peeps.
It is easier for us to shoot up our scores there than spend needless hours on Verbal with little or no
change in the scores. For AWA, I think Kaplan takes care of it neatly.

Wish you luck in your test, ma'am

I understand totally but then this your Chinese has very good research experience. You can't compare him with the average nigerian graduate with little to no research experience. It's really our GPA and GRE scores we have to speak for us other than LORs. If I had a good research experience, with my current GRE scores, trust me, I will not rewrite the GRE. And the calibre of schools we target also matters. I am gunning for top 40 in Engineering. May throw in one top 80 as safe.

Thanks for wishing me good luck. I really appreciate. Hopefully we meet someday. You are a very nice guy. Wish you all the best in your studies!

I literally abandoned verbal about two weeks to my test cos I felt continued
prep on the section was pointless, which I think paid off for me.

Good day people,

I have followed this thread for quite a while now, gained a lot from it and owe a lot to everyone who has contributed here. I recently sat for the GRE and my scores were quite good. It wouldn't have been possible if I didn't get guidance and directions from y'all. I got Q166 V166, analytical scores not out yet, praying for something good (I'm not much of a writer).
I would like to give a brief summary of my studying pattern or experience, I feel I owe it to those yet to take their exams; some may find it useful. I studied for roughly 2.5 months with intensive studying in the last two weeks to the exam. I started with Kaplan, then Manhattan books and finished with the ETS official guides. Each week, I took full-length tests to gauge my level of preparedness (If you have good internet connection, this would be really helpful to develop your own pacing methods). I used the Magoosh vocabulary app and their e-book to learn new words, they were really helpful over a month or so. That's just about all I did.

Thanks once again for all the help guys.
