I understand Nigeria is a homophobic country. At least 90% of Nigerians detest homosexuality.

And while that irks me, I understand that it's who we are for now. Maybe it'd change in the future. May it wouldn't.

But even if you detest homosexuality, you shouldn't feel hate for the individuals who have a different sexuality. You shouldn't seek to take away their liberty. In addition to the stigma, accusations, and what have you. Because they're humans too, contrary to what your religious leaders may have you believe.

They have fundamental human rights and their sexuality doesn't hurt you.

Unfortunately, homosexuality is a crime in Nigeria. And that makes the actions of the two girls in this OP brave, reckless, or an affront depending on the camp you're on.

But these aren't going away, they're here to stay. And as much as that turns your stomach. It's the present reality and denial wouldn't change it.

Now I understand most of us would have a different opinion. Most of you feel ravenous that this is even happening because of a deep-rooted conviction. As misplaced as that hate, I know we all can't think the same way, so yea you are just being human.

But no matter what you think, act civil. Mocking or doling out lots of expletives doesn't make you right. Nigerians are experts at this, but it's improper. You can make your point without all those. So please do.

On this thread I've been called unprintable names. Someone even wished I die a painful, excruciating death. Mind you I'm not even gay. Just because I am an heterosexual with a contrary opinion.

That's how low we've come as a country.

Things would have certainly gone physical if we had this discussion face-to-face. Of course, it'd go unreported. Even in SA where homosexuality is condoned, homosexuals are hunted and killed, raped (it's called correctional sex by the depraved entities who engage in this). I can't begin to imagine how many have been at the receiving end in Nigeria.

But with a nascent democracy and having a constitution that ideally should have ultimate respect of human right, we may have crossed the divide of race, religion, ethnicity, gender, but we are yet to come to terms with the many divides in sexuality.

You can detest homosexuality and still respect their rights to have their liberty. Some of us detest other religions, denominations, or sects, but we still respect the rights of the believers to have liberty.

No one is forcing you to like homosexuality. No one is forcing you to accept it.

It's all about four words.

LIVE and LET LIVE.

Hate me or anyone who doesn't share your view about homosexuality being evil all you want. Everyone's got a hater. But be decent to pass your message across without expletives, vituperations, insults and the likes. That is just uncivil.
