Don't collect people's bag,let them carry it themselves. The last time I worked in Nigeria, the CEO came in,trust me now, I sat right there! Others stood up.He asked me to stand up when I'm talking to him. Guess what,I resigned!

Our culture let people take advantage of u sometimes. Sorry I'm a Yoruba guy but I'm not with u on this.Change bro.

What does it matter? The whole classification system itself is arbitrary.

Are "white people" realy white? some only whitish, others are pink and a few could be best described as gray. at times you can't really tell the difference between white people and arabs going by skin color alone...so why is this an issue that anyone should get worked up over?

Lol you can't take it away from us.

u will nearly run if your hubby take u to his village and start introducing u to all family members

That is where u will have to kneel for Both elders and kids o .

Don't mind us Sister

I have to agree that it's a culture that no one can take away. Just do it when you see people that will understand what you're doing. As an Ibo girl, it's only my father-in-law and his wife when she was alive that I bend down for as a normal mark of respect, every other person, you're on your own.

it's Yoruba mentality, they love it too much, I remember the secondary school years, the owner of the school is an igbo woman, she instructed us to always call all female staff "Madam" while the male are "Sir"
fast-forward to the day of waec, one Yoruba external invigilator came, somebody tried to call her attention "Madam",she then became furious cursing in Yoruba, blah blah blah, call me mummy not madam, I am old enough to be ur mother blah blah blah, I am not igbo etc, it was another thing that day, For me I can't ever call anyone who is not my mother Mummy, it doesn't make sense

Even the primary I went a deeper woman owns it, I never really did wrap my head around why we called her "School mummy"

like somebody said, salutation is never love, Yoruba think that lying in the mud to greet somebody is respect,i am sorry to burst your bubble, it's not

you can force a child who hates you to prostrate to you but fact is he will still hate u afterwards

lmao. it's because in Yoruba language "madam" and mummy are called with the same word "Iya"

I dont get why she took offense by being called "madam" tho ..some people have serious problems. .it's not a yoruba thing

NO, what he did by relating it to others in this forum is not wrong. Atleast some have taken note.

Thank God i am not a Yoruba man o. Yorubas are the perfect slaves, it is deep rooted in their blood and disguised as respect for the elderly. It just happens that the elderly are the richest and powerful ones, If he was a much younger wealthy person he would still do the same. Yorubas have been suffering from slavery long before the Whites came to colonize us, Virtually every tribe including theirs have enslaved them in the past. I will only carry bags from my parents or if it is obvious to everyone that you are struggling with heavy bags. Apart from that you can even fire me for not bending to greet you or carrying your weightless handbags. This is why i have problem with Yorubas superiors. They attached too much relevance to themselves and demand respects as if they eat it.

Just resumed my new office last week o.

My first time of working with White man sa (Lebanese) , The man is free and humble in fact everybody loves him, among other Lebanese my Boss is jovial, free and hardworking man.

He has worked in 5 African countries so he understands Africa and her culture very well.

The real story....

I resumed very early this morning and I decided to wait in front of office before I start today's activities when I saw my boss coming down from his Truck carrying his bag , as a young Yoruba man that comes from good background ..lol So I ran to him and say Good morning sir (bend my head) and I stretch my hand to collect his bag.

The man who has never disrespect me like that before shouted on me!!

Who owns the bag? he asked

repeat!!!! who owns the bag moscobabs?

Me: You sir!!!! I replied..

if it's me "why should u collect it from me?

Me: I just wanted to help u sir.

Y? ..... I couldn't respond .

I say why? ...meet me in office now!!!! he commanded .

We entered his office and he sat me down

moscobabs, You were employed as so so so in this company not to carry bag, the bag belongs to me and I must carry it, also you always bend whenever you greet me...please its not necessary, in fact its not official, I just opportune to be your boss, you are married as I , You are graduate although you are younger than me but you have to attach respect to yourself.

I was like " ki la gbe, ki la ju" but I replied him by saying ....

Sir, I am african we have cultures and Traditions and parts of these is what I did, We respect our elders and seniors that's why we bend or prostrate while greeting and we do help them carry their loads even if we carry ours too.

And he responded with smiles...No problem But when next you greet me in such an embarrassing way or try to collect my bag I won't think twice before I sack you!!!

I beg o Is anything wrong in what I did?

Is there any other reason for his reaction?

The man just dey look me somehow since morning

In d look u somehow this morning to see if the bulala he gave u last time has sunk in. Am sure he felt kind of bad about what he said hence the sheepish look this morning but that won't stop him from doing.juat what he said.

Head bending are for lizards, always keep it professional! Perhaps respect isn't as a result of greeting your elders or bending you head but by respecting his core values since his your boss.. So next time you see an agama lizard shout the blood of jesus

Dude arrange yourself. You are working for a logical human now. Thank God it's not the Indians I heard they are slave drivers.

Dude he told you straight your job is your job not to carry load up and down.

Meanwhile for the bend down greeting thing. I am not a Yoruba but work in the environment and now it's almost a part of me. You must dobale to greet Ogas

But don't do that for a white man. He doesn't get it.

Lol.
Yep that's it but some ogas do expect too much. U guys remember pix of Rochas and house of rep guys kneeling down and prostrating on the floor. Our Nigerian mentality and over hyping of egos makes most African bosses almost tyrants when it comes to these sort of things. I know a friend that is a PA to one of these senate peeps and his arrogant principal expects anyone who meets him to prostrate on the floor when greeting him. The man visited the UK some time back and Nigerians who knew him were prostrating on the road for him (god forbid bad thing). He was shocked to his marrow when he met me for the first time and I stretched out my hand to shake him as my guy introduced me to him. I see as the man dey look me conny conny eye. I later overheard the man asking my guy who I was and if I wasn't trained well to have greated him like that. Before my friend could answer I walked up to them and told him to his face "with all due respect sir. It would be preposterous for u to expect me to postrate for u on the streets of London. That does not dispute the fact that I respect u". Anyway he developed a dislike for.me after that. Though he was impressed with what we presented them with but that act alone could be the reason why the cancelled our offers for them. Anyway wahatever!

Op, you are "eye service" person and the Lebanese man saw through your antics.

What were you doing in front of the man's office when you should already be working at your duty post. Were you employed to be standing in front of the Lebanese man's door?

Consider yourself very lucky your boss is a nice man if not he would have sacked you on the spot.

It obviously is, don't you get it? You 'fired' a staff for bowing to you while he or she greeted and you consider it weird, because you don't understand why the person did it (I know you lied but I'll just pretend).

When Yemi Osinbajo almost went on her knees to greet the president, I could remember how some people from a particular divide called her a slave just because it's alien to them. You failed to understand how culture could influence our decisions and attitude particularly when meeting people for the first time.

A friend of mine almost went on her knees at a mall when her long lost friend introduced her to her parents who are Igbos. Trust the Yoruba attitude in her while greeting them. I didn't take the dad 5 seconds to figure where she's from.

Unfortunately, most of the people crying on the thread are folks who have never left their regions or state to see how it is done in the SW.

So you see, my friend, everything boils down to tribe here.
While you tried to make a point you went over board ..do not ever call me a liar again.
I have no need to impress you or any other faceless noob here.
Kindly 're read my comment slowly and try to comprehend before just rushing to type and look cool .
