I was horribly wowed by the number of support some people were giving to the teachers that perpetrated this dastardly act...Is it because people's human right has been thrown to the dogs in Nigeria that they do not know the difference between good and bad?...where people will deliberately inflict pain on others and goes scotch free... where uniformed person will slap someone and there will not be law suit awaiting for him @ home...

Anyways, I guess that's how they were being wired....They have never known or seen better....

And why has this bullying we see here which is also prevalent in many other schools, not stopped teenage pregnancy and other social vices?
Compare the so called 'bullying' of today to that of 'yesterday' and tell why and how it stopped (curb) teenage pregnancies then?.

Dear, punishment of such leaves most kids feeling very less of themselves among peers. it leaves a psychological effect that grows in them. Do you know that just words can make your kids abide by all regulations? most parents are not just patient enough to have a chat with their kids. either pick pin, pin pick, crawl in bud, carry bag on head and whatever punishment una call it, I will never condone such for my precious child. Train your child from small with good morals accompanied with the word of God and you won't believe who your child will grow to be.

I agree 100 % with what you said...

As a kid I was manhandled by anyone who was older than me for the slightest of things, it could be your neighbour or even other relatives.

I know the scars all those things inflicted on me, and woe betides anyone who tries that with my girl, one of us will be visiting the hospital......

That said, it is brutality like this that has desensitized Nigerians too much, so much so that I took a poll, on what people thought about lynching and many, across educational levels saw nothing wrong with it, and you call Nigeria!a country or a farm house

We are all for disciplining our kids, but not to dehumanize them or make them have low self esteem (which by the way, one of the reasons why they sent face their government's is because they have been brutalized to submission)

Discipline should NEVER be compromised, but we should not dehumanize in the guise of discipline.

21st century is not only about technological development. It's also about behaving in more civilized manner than in the past. It's also about embracing gentle ways to resolving issues than the aggressive and archaic methods of the past.

This method here qualifies for bullying.

Better method to deal with this is making them do some school chores such as clearing weeds, cleaning toilets, arranging books on bookshelves, etc.
Tell a child to clean the toilet and his parent would list all the possible germ that has infected them. Tel them to work in school farm ad they will tell you that they paid school fees not to make their children farmers but to learn. Place them under any other corrective measure and they will recount how you marginalised their wards by punishing them when others are learning. As long as this 21st century civilization saga is concerned people don't want their children to be touched again. But we are Africans and shouldn't be deceived by the illusions of american movies.

Same people will hypocritically condemn a man beating his wife for not doing house chores.

If this is right what makes the husband beating his wife for something else wrong?

Please let's stop deceiving ourselves. It is not by kneeling down or crawling or even pick pin that a child becomes disciplined. There has to be a balancing of corporal punishment and oral warning or advice.

Your argument holds no water. If the school can get away with this corporal punishment, it will surely be able to get away with making this do chores.
This is the worst of all the options available to the school. Why settle for it?

Do you condemn a man who beats his wife for any failure? If you do, what is different in this case?

Regardless of your sentiments, any corrective measure that is not detrimental to the health a child is welcomed.

Just had to add this after reading the comments.

I hope people are aware that corporal punishment desensitizes a child. Sometimes words have bigger impact on children. You can flog a child all you want but they will still do what they want. Sometimes all we need to do is, understand and see things from their prospective. Talk to them, ask them the reasons behind their actions. Only then would you understand why they are acting a certain way and then you can think about the best way to discipline or advice them. Every child is different. What work for A won't work for B.

I'm ashamed of this your post. This is 21st century and there are better ways of instilling discipline than this demeaning and reprehensible method.

I won't accept this punishment or anything close to it for my children from any school.

Modified*
No need to quote me to spew nonsense such as "how old are you?". Or "I'm sure you have no children" and "this is how our children get spoiled without disciplining them".

Just use pestle and planks on yours or throw them in oven all in the name of instilling discipline in them.

End of story.
that's if ur children go to public school..

If you all see nothing wrong in making children of ten years and below kneel in mud and crawl with their knees, I therefore advise you to do same with your kids when you eventually have them.

If you guys like, use big pestle to hit your children or throw them in oven just to make them disciplined. Na una sabi.

I already have. My priority in life is to ensure my children are the best they can be. The main part of that is to ensure they are disciplined. That they understand that, for any action or inaction, there are consequences

Dragging them through the mud tho, very very barbaric , why demean them? ... There are other ways to discipline children such a detention , no break , making them do minor chores in school, speak with their parents, extra homework .. but as africans we prefer to beat and harm children, then we wonder how they turn out the way they do

How does this post stop soldiers in nysc camps from telling grown up men and women to lie down or roll on the ground? Some people say it's barbaric even when they know that kneeling has been helping children since 1900. Who 20th century's way of punishment help?

Pls when I said "detrimental to their health" it is ascribed to the extreme degree because almost all simple daily activities are detrimental to health even the use of phone, which you are doing now.
Telling a child to kneel walk is inorder as long as it doesn't happen on a hard surface than can injure their knees. That's all.

What is barbaric here? It is discipline my Dear OP. Some of us experienced it while in primary school. For some of us it was kneel down + flogging.

Yes, it made lots of kids understand the importance of punctuality.

I think you need to visit a shrink, you obviously need help, you nigerians have gone from being barbaric to becoming apelike, you see children being made to crawl in the mud and this was your response to such child abuse? how do you instill discipline by doing such? when kids come late often you simply write their parents and ask them to make them come early, why is it difficult for some nigerians to tell the difference between right prove wrong? so because slaves were sold in the past then if someone tries tp enslave people today you will come out and say after all some people were enslaved in the past or maybe people should continue killing twins afterall twins were killed in the past, besides i am so sure no teacher ever made you crawl in the mud.

that's very true. Went to primary school in that very country though a missionary school but if commit at home and ur parents mentioned reporting to ur headmaster u begin to cry. Sometimes even 3year old needs to be punished in accordance with the little bad things they do so that they will know that such things are not expected of them. That's why I love my grandpa. If I commit 10 times a day he will treat my Bleep 19 times a day. But he still have me all I wanted and doesn't come home without buying something for me. grin

Within urself choose, would u send ur ward to study in this kind of school? That's if u've got the money. Obviously not. Afterall all upon the punishment most of them still come out hardened without vision. The teachers end up cooking more punishments than teaching them.

Reminds me of my secondary school days: a Senior Student punished me for making noise in class, I was asked to cut grass (very big field)just for noise making.
Instead of learning from such, I became more arrogant and plotted to deal with the senior student.
I didn't deserve such.
I can't put my children in such a school.

So I don't encourage this practice at all. I've not seen anyone who gave testimony that such method helped him or her during school days.
