Twenty-two

“Not Omotola,” Feyi said a few hours later. In silence, she thought until she met Tunji’s puzzling gaze.

“What’s not Omotola?” her husband asked. Her husband who had had an affair with Omotola and who for the past few weeks she and everyone thought was the father of Omotola’s child. He had just finished signing Omotola’s bail release papers.

“Nothing,” she said masking a sigh. She smiled for her husband’s benefit. “Are you guys done now?”

Tunji had an indiscernible look on his face, “Feyi? Are you okay?” he asked.

Feyi considered her answer, should she lie or tell him the truth? She decided on the former, technically. “Well, technically, I’m fine, its just that everything seems overwhelming you know. Stephanie’s death, Dr. Lily in my boot, Omotola’s attack and now her confession. This changes a lot of things.”

Tunji sighed, “do you think Omotola murdered those women?”

Did she? She wanted to but that was a few days before. Now she had heard Omotola’s side of the story, she wasn’t so sure of her earlier conviction.

“I don’t know what to believe,” she admitted. “Maybe she didn’t.”

Tunji’s shrewd brows arched in her direction. “Meaning the killer is still out there, mysterious and very dangerous.”

Omotola joined them just then, “all right, I think we’re good to go,” she said.

Feyi had a strange look on her face as she looked at the doorway to the new entrant at the station. “Not quite yet dear.”

Omotola and Tunji’s brows both furrowed in surprise as they turned around to look at who Feyi had been looking at.

“Who told him to come here?” Omotola demanded.

“I did. I think the two of you have to iron out one or two issues.” At Omotola’s defiant pout, Feyi held her shoulders. “Look Tola, you don’t want to hide the knowledge of a child from its father, I’ve been down that road before and…,” she paused thoughtfully and looked up at her husband, “it nearly cost me my marriage. You both should talk,” she said.

Dayo walked up to them just then, “Hey TJ,” he said shaking his brother-in-law, “Fey,” he nodded at her and finally his gaze landed on Omotola, “its been a while Tally.”

*****
“It was nice of you to do that,” Tunji told her as they drove home.

“I don’t know, I just went with my instincts. I think I know ladies like Omotola, she’s strong willed, determined and egoistic.”

“Sound like anyone familiar?” Tunji asked with a small smile.

“Yes, me,” she smiled a little as she looked at him. “You know, I never really apologized…”

Tunji cut her off, “you don’t need to baby, I’ve forgiven you already. I believe we’ve both learned our lessons.”

“I believe we have.”

Tunji smiled at the road ahead, happy that most of their problems had been resolved amicably. Even happier that he hadn’t done anything to hurt Omotola or her baby in the end.

“You seemed edgy tonight, Tola,” he observed, “and I couldn’t help noticing you haven’t come back to me on the request I made earlier, is everything all right?”

She sprang from her chair. “You can’t be serious Tunji, its risky and you know it. Did you ask the same from her too?” she fired back in disgust.

Keeping his hands in his trouser pockets, Tunji advanced on her. He knew the ‘her’ was his wife, Feyi and he had little doubts concerning the paternity of the child she was carrying. Omotola on the other hand, he wasn’t so sure. His gaze was steady on her round eyes and she took involuntary steps backward. “Don’t be so defensive Tola,” he said. “I haven’t beaten a woman yet.” At the frightened widening of her eyes, he continued, “Tola, I’d never hurt you,” he promised.

Tunji had watched her drift away and after a while.

“I’ll do it,” she whispered.

“You’ll do it?” he repeated startled.

“Yes Tunji, I’ll do anything for you.”

“Omotola,” he said softly, “doing a DNA test on an unborn child could place the baby at risk.”

“If that’s what it will take for you to trust that the child I’m carrying is yours, then I’ll do it.”

She had been lying to him but he was glad they hadn’t put the baby at risk because of it. Throughout his affair with Omotola, he had used protection and had been really careful except on those nights when he’d been drunk and he couldn’t remember anything. Apparently his precautions hadn’t failed. He wondered idly if Tola would have ever told him the truth had she not gotten into trouble with the police. He had never trusted her from the beginning but he knew she was no murderer. Omotola could be selfish, childish and vindictive but she wasn’t a killer. Not after living with the horror that was her grim life history. She hadn’t told him details about her family before, just that she was an orphan but hearing about her dysfunctional childhood had brought back memories of his own.

His mother had always been headstrong and willful, she had refused to listen to her parents counsel on dating boys around who would only spoil her. She had eventually met his father who indeed spoiled her and refused to accept responsibility for the pregnancy. He ran away when the pressure was beginning to mount and was never seen again. His mother, a secondary school drop out, now humbled by her experience, carried her pregnancy till full term alone.

She eventually got a job offer to work as a house help in Italy and had left her two year old son in the care of her parents for greener pastures. A few months later, she had been shot dead by an irate customer. Contrary to what her parents had been led to believe, she had been prostituting in Italy. Her parents had been plunged into more hardship following her death and for the next twenty years of his life, they had lived in abject poverty until they both died only a month apart from each other.

He had been in 300 level then and had struggled to survive through final year and through some minor projects see himself through a two year masters programme. He had met Feyi after masters and during his youth service, then his luck seemed to have changed forever.

He knew he led a charmed life because of her and now Omotola’s child wasn’t his, he had a true second chance with her. A second chance to do right by her, Tunji wasn’t one to play with second chances.

*****
“Tola can you look at me?” Dayo asked from where he was seated beside her in his car.

“And why should I? What is there to look at?” she said stubbornly and kept her gaze riveted outside the window.

“Alright, if you don’t want to look at me, at least talk to me.”

“About what?”

“Well if you don’t want to talk to me, I have some things to say to you and I hope you listen…”

“I’m pregnant for you Dayo.”

“Oh shi.t,” he said.

“I see where we stand.” Omotola opened the door and almost fell out of the parked car in her haste.

Dayo came out of the car and followed her. “Tally wait…I didn’t mean…”

She didn’t as much as glance back at him, “you’re right Dayo, you didn’t mean any of it. You never meant any of it. You just wanted to take me on a ride and have fun.”

Dayo covered up the distance between them in three long strides and tried to hold her hand.

“Don’t you dare touch me. You’ve said all that you had to say in two words, all that you think I mean to you, ‘shit.’”

“I was shocked Tola come on give a man a break. I wasn’t expecting it.”

“Of course you weren’t, you were having fun and whiling away time with a naïve girl who was dumb enough to have genuine feelings for you,” she ground out angrily.

“Tola, I’m sorry okay, I’m sorry for everything. I’m sorry I didn’t treat you right.”

“Yeah right, if your girlfriend Stephanie was still alive I wonder if you would be feeling this remorseful.”

*****
When Feyi and Tunji returned home that afternoon, it was to meet an empty house. Musa the gateman told them on arrival that Blessing wasn’t back home yet from picking Tomiwa from the daycare. Feyi thought this odd and out of character for Blessing as she was supposed to be home some hours earlier after her lectures at the State University ended. She was pursuing a degree in Psychology for the past three years and balanced taking care of Tomiwa with her studies. Blessing would call if she was going to get home late and at 6pm, it was pretty late. She hoped her son wasn’t still at the daycare.

“Good evening ma,” Feyi was speaking Mrs Ali.

“Mrs Afolabi, its wonderful to hear from you, how are you and the family?”

“Very well ma and you?”

“We thank God.”

“Ma I’m actually calling to know if Blessing has been by to pick Tomiwa today.”

“Oh of course, she has. She came by pretty early today though said her classes were cancelled.”

Feyi frowned, “really? By what time?”

“Around 12pm or thereabouts.”

Feyi took in a deep breath, that didn’t look good one bit. Blessing had picked Tomiwa six hours ago and still wasn’t home.

“Feyi! You need to see this!” Tunji said from the kitchen where he had disappeared to on their return to get himself a drink. Feyi felt her hands turn clammy as she finished her call to Mrs. Ali. Tunji’s voice had set off the alarm of danger in her head and she walked to the kitchen in dread.

Tunji was holding a sheet of paper in his hand when she arrived. “I saw this on the counter top,” he said handing her the sheet.

Feyi read the note and as her brain assimilated the words, the alarm went on full blast in her head.
