Mickael2:

this is what I always have in mind when I say that we should bench Onazi. Now you are looking at it from another angle though. Mikel hasn't been playing for Chelsea, definetly he is match rusty, so you don't expect him to maintain the same intensity, but every single match we have played under Rohr(Tanzania, Zambia and Algeria), Mikel has always been the central figure of our first half performances up till the 60th minute and we can both agree that our first 60 minutes these past few games have been quite productive, so that's why the coach utilises Mikel's strengths during that period, we keep possession and calm things down, then we strike and grab a couple of goals before fatigue takes hold of Mikel and we have done that perfectly well. But the problem now is, when Mikel gets tired what happens? The midfield collapses entirely because it exposes Onazi's inability to control a game. Onazi is not a possession sensitive player at all, if we want to play on the counter then he is good but he does not really play that possession game that we adopt, now in cases like this the coach introduces another DMF who can control a game. So my question is since Onazi naturally lacks the ability to control a game, why not just start with a DMF who can control a game so that even when Mikel gets tired, we won't get outplayed till he is subbed. This is my criticism of Onazi, you can check all the matches that we have played with the two, once Mikel gets tired, Onazi becomes a headless chicken in the middle which at this point is unsuitable for a team with certain ambitions(like winning the World Cupsmiley)

Mikel has played more as a CM and AM for Nigeria than a DM.

He brings more to the team in a more advanced midfield position.

We had a similar argument abt how best to utilise Mikel at Rio.

He repeatedly has been played as a CM/AM under several Super Eagles coaches.

Onazi may not be among the most fancied DMs in the world but the lad has enough to maintain his spot in the Super Eagles team.

I know u dnt like Onazi so u would jump at any suggested formation that will send him to the bench.

Dominic Iorfa Jnr's father once said his son will likely play for or consider playing for Nigeria when he turns 22-23 as he wants his son to make the most of the English system.

Iorfa Jnr is both a rightback (predominantly) and centreback.

He will get his chance but how many rightbacks we go invite?? Idowu, Odubajo, Iorfa Jnr, Ebuehi.... etc... All of them??

What about left backs like Josh Debayo for instance?

All of the above. grin

Josh Debayo never mature.

Rohr Wants Eagles To Stay Unbeaten Through World Cup Qualifiers

The Super Eagles will strive to remain unbeaten in the Africa Group B of the 2018 World Cup
qualifiers, Nigeria's coach Gernot Rohr has told
Completesportsnigeria.com.

"I am happy with the success we have made so
far in the World Cup qualifiers," Rohr said in
Abuja.

"Two wins from two games and on top of
the group log is good but it demands hard work
and total dedication to remain there to the end of the qualifiers next year. Our next game against Cameroon is very crucial and we have to win to enhance our chances.

"We are looking at the possibility of going through the qualifiers unbeaten. We want to continue to play to win all our matches. The group is tough but we have taken a good lead and if we continue like that we shall be in Russia. After beating Algeria in Uyo, we need to beat Cameroon here and hope for a result in the return leg to seal our qualification."

He said that to ensure that unbeaten run
continues, he would embark on a tour of
Germany, Turkey, Belgium and France
to talk with some players and their club officials in an effort to strengthen the Super Eagles quest to be in Russia.

On Isaac Success, Rohr said that he has been monitoring his health condition, adding that he would give him a chance to play for the Eagles. Rohr said the Watford FC star is fast and
aggressive and that is what the Eagles need in
that Eagles attack.

Chelsea Outcast Mikel Credits Ex West Ham
Star Di Canio As Inspiration Behind Goal For
Nigeria

Captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria John Obi
Mikel who scored the second goal for Nigeria, in
their 3-1 win over Algeria has posted video of
where he got the inspiration to score the goal.

The 29 year old who has been frozen out of the
first team set up by coach Antonio Conte scored
Nigeria’s second goal from a position that looks
like he was offside.

Players of Algeria stopped playing anticipating the offside flag, Mikel also stopped for a while but upon seeing that the flag of the assistant referee was down, he finished off the move for Nigeria’s second goal of the game.

Mikel posted a short video of West Ham legend
Paolo Di Canio who scored a similar goal few year
ago in a English Premier League game against
Manchester United.

”@OfficialDiCanio thanks for the inspiration this weekend”, Mikel posted on his official twitter account.

Just like players of Algeria, Manchester United
players stopped playing, Di Canio just like Mikel as well stopped playing but after seeing that the flag is down, he side footed his effort past Fabian
Barthez into the net.

Alampasu Can Be Our Donnaruma- Rohr
Compares Shot Stopper To Highly Rated Italian

Coach of the Nigeria senior national team Gernot Rohr has spoken of his admiration of the qualities of goalkeeper Dele Alampasu, who was with the Super Eagles before the clash against Algeria.

Alampasu didn’t get to play in the encounter as
Rohr went for the experience of Daniel Akpeyi
over the 20 year old, and Ikechukwu Ezenwa who is lacking match sharpness following the
conclusion of the Nigeria Premier League.

However the coach appears to have seen a lot of the goalkeeper who was voted best goalkeeper at the U-17 World Cup in 2013, and he has tipped him to be an excellent goalkeeper for Nigeria in a not too distant future.

”He did very well in training, brave and
commanding. Very athletic as well. He will in no
time be a regular goalkeeper for Nigeria but for
now he needs games to reach his sharpness”, he told owngoalnigeria.com

”We have goalkeepers coming through at a very young age these days like the Italian kid
(Gianluigi Donnaruma), He could do same for
Nigeria, if he maintains his hardwork and focus”.

Algeria FA boss: We should forget World Cup, focus on AFCON

Algeria Football Federation (FAF) president Mohamed Raouraoua has said the country should now turn their attention to the forthcoming AFCON in Gabon away from the qualifying series for the 2018 World Cup.

After two rounds of matches, Algeria are bottom of their group in the qualifying tournament for Russia 2018.

The FAF boss said Algeria plan to win a second AFCON trophy in Gabon after their first win in 1990 at home.

“We have to forget the defeat in Nigeria and the 2018 World Cup and now think of the more immediate AFCON in Gabon,” Raouraoua implored.

“The AFCON will be an interesting challenge for us and who says we cannot come back to Algiers with the trophy?”

Algeria are drawn against Senegal, Tunisia and Zimbabwe at Gabon 2017, which will be played between January 14 to February 5.

He said he believes Algeria will present a better challenge when the World Cup qualifiers resume in August.

“The qualifiers will resume in August and by then we will have four games left,” he said.
“We hope then to have a better team ready to fight.”

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has demanded for preparations for the next World Cup qualifier against Cameroon even though it is nine months away.

“We must prepare very hard for Cameroon, even though that is still nine months away. The Lions are a good team and we must be at our best,” said Rohr.

He stated that positive attitude, discipline, dedication, good team spirit and mental strength should get the credit for the team’s fascinating run.

“A positive attitude has helped us thus far, and I also want to commend the players for their discipline and dedication, and very good spirit in camp. They have been excellent,” he saluted.

“The mental strength is also there, because if you have to survive in such a difficult group, you need very good mental strength and focus.

“We have shown in the first two matches that we have the personnel and the good spirit to go all the way.”

Fred Friday rejected million Euros-a-year from China - Agent

Nigerian striker Fred Friday rejected a lucrative deal to move to China that would have paid him more than a million Euros a year and instead opted to join Dutch club AZ Alkmaar.

In the summer, Friday moved to AZ Alkmaar from Norwegian club Lillestrom.

But the striker’s agent Atta Aneke has now specially revealed the player could also have taken up a more financially rewarding deal to China.

“Fred Friday, who I took to AZ Alkmaar in the summer had an offer from China, where he would be paid more than a million Euros net a year, but he chose to go to AZ,” Aneke said.

The Oslo-based agent said more often than not a move to China has to do with the cash.

“China is all about the money most times,” he admitted.

Algeria fans give up on 2018 World Cup ticket

A majority of Algeria fans have given up on their team qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Algeria are bottom of Group B with a point after two rounds of matches, while Nigeria are top of the standings on six points.

Cameroon are second with two points, while Zambia have a point and a better goals’ difference than Algeria.

According to a poll conducted by top Algerian football website DZFoot, 43% of those polled said the Desert Foxes have lost out on reaching Russia 2018 after they slumped to a 3-1 loss in Nigeria at the weekend.

However, 31% of the fans said it will be tough but possible to qualify because Nigeria will slip in the qualifiers after winning their first two matches.

Another 15% said Algeria are often at their best when they have their backs against the wall and so they could still bounce back to advance to the next World Cup.

Eleven percent of those polled have completely surrendered, saying it is only in Africa that three World Cup finalists are drawn in the same qualifying group.

"Those are the key area where the team need back up.”

John Ogu Q&A: I am open to quit Israel

John Ogu

Midfielder John Ogu has hinted he will be open to quit Israeli champions Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

He also speaks on his return to the Super Eagles after more than a year in the international wilderness as well as the quest for Nigeria to be at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The full interview -

QUESTION: John, how are you doing? You are back in the Super Eagles.

OGU: Yes, it feels great to be back and I am happy we won against Algeria. We have to keep looking ahead because there are still more games to play before we get to the World Cup and we want to get there.

How would you assess this match?

We did what was asked of us. Kudos to the coach and the rest of the staff as well as the players, who were on the pitch. Everyone gave his best.

It was great to beat Algeria, one of the leading teams in Africa.
It’s also great to be on top of the table with six points.

We just have to keep fighting and winning games.
The target is to play at the World cup and if we continue like this, we will be at the World Cup.

Who will you dedicate this big home win to?

I will dedicate it to the fans because they have suffered a lot after we did not qualify for two straight AFCONS.

That is why we want to be at the World Cup now.

You played at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil. How does the team then compare with the current Super Eagles?

It’s a different team now and a different coach, so a different mentality.

Every coach has his own philosophy and kind of players.
The past is the past and the present is the present.
We have the players to now qualify for the next World Cup.

You were named best foreign player in Israel last season.
It was great to know that the people in Israel appreciated what I did.

But the credit must first go to my teammates because they were the main reason I was so awarded.

But as a player I always want to improve and so I will continue to work hard.

Don’t you think you ought to now quit the Israeli league to a much bigger league?

I still have a contract with my club and the fans and the club love and appreciate me. They showed me love from the first day.

I had offers, but they would not let me go.
I will respect my contract and keep working.

I don’t know what the future holds, but I am open to new challenges.
Thank you so much.
Thanks as well.

Rohr hopes Tyronne Ebuehi solves Eagles right back problem

Tyronne Ebuehi

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has said he hopes youngster Tyronne Ebuehi will eventually be a solution to the right back problem in his team.

Rohr admitted he has had to play four different players in that position in his first three matches in charge – Musa Mohammed, Wilfred Ndidi, Kenneth Omeruo and Shehu Abdullahi.

“I hope Ebuehi comes the next time (after they he stayed away against Algeria to focus on his career,” said Rohr.

“Musa Mohammed played in that position against Tanzania and he was good, but he is not playing at his club in Turkey. He must find a solution.

“We have also played Ndidi, Omeruo and Shehu in that position.”

Ebuehi from Dutch club ADO Den Haag was stopped from the Algeria match by his agent even after his parents approved for him to honour the call-up.

Alex Iwobi one of the best young players in the world - Siasia

Iwobi shows off an award this season.

Samson Siasia, who gave Alex Iwobi his first chance with the Nigeria Olympics team, has hailed the Arsenal youngster as one of the best young players in the world.

He is equally amazed by how fast Iwobi has grown from playing in the second team of Arsenal to now a full international with Nigeria within a short time.

His Rainbow Flick against Algeria on Saturday compares to the tricks his uncle, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, pulled off in his playing days and remains a talking point several days after.

“When I first saw him, he had good touches but being his first time in Nigeria after a long while, you could not see the best of him,” Siasia narrated.

“We needed him to understand the kind of system in Nigeria and now see what he has turned out to be – one of the best young players in the world.”

He added: “I am amazed with the rapid growth of Alex.

“It has been a great transition for him. He is now a star at Arsenal playing with a lot of confidence.

Two years ago, nobody knew who he was as he was playing in the Arsenal second team.”

Arsenal did not release Iwobi for the recent Rio Olympics and he has since cemented his place in the Super Eagles.

Siasia said Iwobi senior should take a lot of the credit.

“Kudos must go to his dad, who did everything for Alex to be where he is today,” he said.

“If it weren’t for his father, Alex would not have played for Nigeria to start with.”

I thought I'll be loaned out - Iwobi

Alex Iwobihas admitted he never expected to be a first-team player so soon at Arsenal.

The forward burst onto the scene last season and has been able to keep his spot in Arsene Wenger’s squad this term.

He has appeared in nine out of Arsenal’s 11 Premier League games this year and he’s explained how that was beyond his wildest dreams not so long ago.

Iwobi told Arsenal’s website: “Honestly I didn’t expect to be where I am today.

“I thought a long time ago that I’d be on loan and probably get experience there before having experience in the first team.

“But the fact that the boss trusted me to jump into the first team as quick as I did, I’m just grateful for it.

“The same way I was able to break into it is the same way that I take the chance now.

“I play like it’s almost like my last game, I treat it like it’s my last moment here, so I do my best and I always put 100 per cent into whatever I do.”

Iwobi and Co face a difficult challenge this weekend as they travel to Old Trafford to play Manchester United. Arsenal sit fourth in the Premier League and will be looking to improve on their 1-1 draw with Tottenham last time out.

Nigeria 3-1 Algeria: Five things we learnt.

Obiweluozo Martins

The Super Eagles overpowered the Desert Foxes of Algeria to seize control of the group in the World Cup qualifying campaign with 6 points to their credit following a 3-1 win at home.

The Eagles were in top form with goals from Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel in the 42nd minute in between Victor Moses’ brace in the 26th and 91st minutes of the game to ensure Eagles victory in the encounter.

With the 3-1 win at home the Eagles leads the group with six points above closest rivals Cameroon who just have two points following a 1-1 draw at home with Zambia. The Eagles might have had a buoyant outing against Algeria but we take into consideration some key things as regards to the game.

MESMERIZING VICTOR MOSES

The Super Eagles winger was terrific all night and got a brace to show for it, with one of the goals coming in dying minutes of the game. The Chelsea man drew the first blood in the 26th minute following a mix-up in the Algerian box before applying the finish in the bottom corner to give Nigeria the lead after he was set up in transition by the Eagles skipper for the breakthrough.

The 25 years old who is enjoying a fine moment of his carrier at Chelsea under the management of Italian gaffer Antonio Conte who is a huge admirer of the Nigerian talent, was a threat down the wings as he caught the Algerian back line out of position.

Moses was outstanding in the game and crowned it all with a goal at the closing stage to end any possible chance of an Algerian comeback much to the delight of the home fans in Uyo.

KELECHI NOT A NUMBER 9

The Manchester City forward had a quiet game against Algeria after been deployed as a center forward ahead of more experience point man in Brown Ideye and Odion Ighalo.

It was evident that the Manchester City man was not so comfortable in that position as he was mostly out of play in the course of the 90 minutes.

The forward was deployed in the position due to his potency in front of goal but the golden boy fired blank after he was set up by Ahmed Musa in the 89th minute of the game. It was a game where the young lad was not able to initiate attacking moves as he was the point man causing him wonder mostly alone in the attack.

For a player who have an ability to create and finish himself, it’s no surprise that he is picked to lead the central role as goal scoring is the fundamental of the game but in Kelechi’s case Nigeria must return him to his best position which is behind the striker (free role) to aid this effect in match proceedings for the Super Eagles in the near future.

SHEHU GOOD AT RIGHT BACK

The former Youth international and Kano Pillars star was mostly under-utilized in the Super Eagles, understandably, but after a five star performance at the Olympic Games in Rio, one expected the Super Eagles crew to hand him the right back role especially with the defensive inconsistency in that position playing Omeruo (against Algeria) and Ndidi (against Zambia) was really worrisome and menacing for the Super Eagles as they lack enough fluency to rightly man the right back.

The likes of Yacine Brahimi and Rainford Kalaba were a thorn in the flesh of our right back (Omeruo and Wilfred Ndidi respectively) as they drifted in and out of the duo thus leaving the Eagles backline in imbalance.

Shehu Abdullahi was good and mobile enough and should be allowed to continue in that role in the near future but with credible competitor to keep him on his toes.

ALGERIA JUST UNPROFESSIONAL

At that level of the game you play only to the referees’ instructions and not to whatever you might have taught is the right decision.

Towards the end of the first half with Nigeria leading 1-0, Iwobi retrieved the ball back to Etebo in midfield who viciously found the Eagles skipper free in the box with an Algerian defence keeping him on side.

The referee allowed proceedings and the Super Eagles Captain, Mikel scored the easiest of goals more like a penalty as he turned to hook the ball into the net with the Algerians protesting for an offside which was to no avail as Eagles solidified their advantage with a 2-0 lead in the first period.

Algerians Launch Petition To Stop Gassama From Officiating Games Over Goal Scored By Mikel

An online petition set up by an agitated fan of the Algeria national team aimed at preventing Gambian referee Bakary Papa Gassama has gathered momentum, with over 100 people putting their name to it.

The 37 year old is allowed John Obi Mikel goal, which was seemingly scored from an offside position to stand as Nigeria secure a 3-1 win over Algeria in the CAF 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Coach of Algeria Georges Leekens has narrowed his side defeat to that second goal scored by Mikel few minute to the half time break, as it somehow killed the game off as a contest after 45 minutes.

Video replays analyzed by soccer experts in Algeria proved, Mikel was indeed offside when he scored the second goal for Nigeria and it has lead to the online petition.

They want FIFA to ban Gassama from games in the World Cup 2018 qualifiers particularly games against them as they are yet to win a game he has handled.

NFF React To Iwobi Rainbow Flick : Arsenal Talent Is A Carbon Copy Of Okocha

The Nigeria Football Federation have jumped on the bandwagon of those impressed by the talent of Arsenal attacking midfielder Alex Iwobi after showing off his rainbow flick skill during the Super Eagles 3-1 win over Algeria in a World Cup qualifier this past weekend.

Former Eintracht Frankfurt star Austin Okocha was one of the top exponents of the rainbow flick before hanging up his boots, and the NFF have opined that Iwobi is a carbon copy of his uncle.

“Sure @alexiwobi’s got @IAmOkocha’s blood flowing in his veins #TurnUpTuesday #SuperEagles, ” said the Nigerian Federation via Twitter.

Hale End Academy product Alex Iwobi had played for England youth teams before he pledged his international future to Nigeria in 2015.

The 20-year-old was in action for 75 minutes in Uyo before he was replaced by Leicester City ace Ahmed Musa.

So long as FIFA cannot cancel the goal, who cares?

Mikel may jst have been be 1-3 inches offside but that is not significant enough. The judgment could have gone either ways. The refs are no machines to spot offsides to a level of 100% accuracy.

The Algerians have no case.

Spot-on on that Abdullahi Shehu's performance.

Omeruo tried his best at that position but he played the RB like a CB. No mobility, no single cross.

Shehu showed so much composure especially as the Algerians tried to capitalise on the 'perceived' weakness introduced due to the substitution of Omeruo. I remember how he managed to pass his way out of a tight spot the Algerians created for him. He also pulled out a wonderful cross to Iheanacho.

I had always believed Shehu can cope at that RB. I expected him to play that position against Zambia in Ndola. Well, i wasn't in camp with them. Rohr knows best.

CIV have AFCON in January. We don't.

Besides, we need our players to go back to their respective clubs without injuries.

So friendly matches are only for teams that have tournaments coming? You know that's not true. We've played friendlies when we had no tournament coming up immediately. If we say we need matches to try new players and formations, it is not recommended that you try them out in real matches. Now is the time to try out other guys in the problematic positions to see if they meet the Super Eagles quality.
