Episode 1

“Wiiiiiieeeeeeennnn, wieeeeeeeeeeeeeeen, wieeeeeennnnnennnn” my baby’s cry geared on and on.

“Jesus, please stop her. Please calm her down. What do I know is wrong with her now?” I kept muttering to myself as I sat up and held my three month old baby in my arm. She was crying profusely.

Tears dotted her face like little puddles of water. She doesn’t want to be appeased. She refused to be breastfed too. What shall I do?

I climbed down the bed and danced around while singing lullabies for her but instead of being appeased, Blossom kept crying.
“Is it her diapers?” I asked myself. I went to her wardrobe and brought out another diaper. I went back to the bed, sat down, removed all of her clothes and off I set to the bathroom.

After giving Blossom a warm bath, I came back to the bedroom to dress her in another light, comfortable sleeper after applying sufficient powder on her body and enough oil on her scalp. Yet, the cry continued. I was frustrated.

I brought her close to my bosom as I raised my blouse but her little hands pulled my blouse down meaning “I don’t want your jugs!” She cried the more!

We were in the hospital that very day before for the ante-natal. The last vaccination was not like this o! Though she cried it was not as bad as this. This incessant cry, I have been told to anticipate but I didn’t expect it would be this much. I eased the blouse she was wearing and checked her small shoulder which was the ‘venue’ for the substance causing my baby’s discomfort. I rubbed it over and over again. She cried the more. I put my baby down, knelt beside my bed and cried!

Is this how motherhood thing is? God, this is unbearable! I cried and cried.
You might be thinking, where is your husband? Is your baby fatherless? My dear people, no! My husband is alive,. He is safe and sound.

All the while the drama unfolded, Dave slept so beautifully as if nothing was happening. My baby’s tears and my own- everything was in his ears like lullabies urging him to sleep on.
This was not the man I married!

When I just got married to him, my sleeplessness made him sleepless. When I turned on my side on the bed, he would wake up, no matter how deep his sleep was. He would cuddle me and sing into my ears till I fall I asleep but now, he just didn’t bulge.
He turned in his sleep and sat up. I looked at him and shook my head.

“Dear, are you just…” I was saying when he shut me up.
“What’s the noise about?” He asked, still very sleep-drunk.
I looked at him very intensely, my heart beat rising so fast. Can’t he see my tears? Can’t he see that I need a word of encouragement?
“Are you crying?” he asked, yawning, scratching his head and looking away. My already swollen heart ripped open that I cried aloud.

“Dave, where are you? What is happening? Where is my husband? What has happened to us?” I cried on and on. He shook his head, let out a brief hiss, came down from the bed, picked up a pillow and out of the room he went!

My cry stopped abruptly!

“Is this a dream?” I asked myself
I couldn’t hold it anymore. I tucked my already dozing baby in her small cradle and jumped out of the room as if being pursued by a jackal!

Dave was on the settee, supporting himself with the pillow and some other throw pillows. He was snoring! He looked so unbothered.
One spirit told me to slap him awake, the other told me ‘Liz, take things easy’ I obeyed the latter, walked close to him, knelt down beside him and tapped him.

“Ohhh, Liz, what’s it? Its midnight. Sleep! If not, let me sleep!” he said.

‘I won’t cry!’ I told myself. I called my Spirit, Soul and Body to let’s fight the battle together.

“Dave, what’s wrong? You couldn’t hear Blossom crying so heavily. Could you?”

“Of course I could. But you know, cuddle her, sing to her, do everything. She would sleep”

“yes, I have tried everything but they didn’t work. I think it’s the vaccination that is the cause.”

“Well, if it didn’t work when the mother tried all, would it work if I tried? Liz, try to be reasonable!” He said. I blinked so hard to avoid my tears from falling.

“You could still show care Dave. You are supposed to show me care” My eyes failed me as I started crying again. Dave hissed!

“See Liz, this cry is irritating! Grow up! What’s the difference between you and Blossom? When a grown up tries to behave like a baby, she becomes an slowpoke!” he blurted out. I sat on the cold tiles, picked one of the throw pillows and I started banging it on the floor thinking the experience would wake me up from my slumber. I felt a sharp headache.

“Dave, I have lost you! Jesus, I have lost my husband!” I cried out over and over again.

Our marriage is only a year old. What is happening? Those times when I was pregnant and I was acting a kid that was sobbing, he would cuddle me and call me “my baby with my baby” while he wiped my tears. Now, this isn’t even an act and it irritated him. It didn’t pain him, it didn’t concern him! What has suddenly come over him?

He had been behaving weird and absurd for many days now but now it’s getting out of hand.

I went close to him and sat beside him. I held his hand which he reluctantly allowed. I sighed at this.

“Dave, please, let’s pray. I can sense that something is wrong.” I said. He threw my hands away, hissed and stood up.

“Don’t bring in prayers into something like this. Why are you being illogical? If you can’t let me be, I will leave the house for you” he said, wore his slip-ons and walked towards the door.

As he was about to open, I blocked him.
Where is he going to? It’s just few minutes to midnight. This night? God forbid!” I thought to myself.

I looked into his face and my heart yearned for my husband, but his eyes scared me. They were red as burning coals. My heart started racing.

I cried out as he caught my right hand and pushed me off his way into one of the arm chairs. It was so painful.

The key turned twice and the door opened. There was a loud bang as he closed the door behind him.

“Jesus! This can’t be your will right? But you told me it is Dave and no one else. That was why I said yes. You did! What’s it now?…Oh God!”

I could cry no more. The veins at the sides of my head were thumping to the extent that the noise disturbed me! My head was banging as if yam was being pounded in it. I was exhausted. My nose was blocked! My eyes were heavy.

Where is my caring, loving, prayerful and peace-loving husband and father of Blossom? It’s obviously not this monster!

Where is my husband? Can someone just tell me his whereabouts?

Episode 2

The scent of our Rosemary perfume wafted into my nose and I opened my heavy eyes.
Wow! Its morning already.
I knew if I checked the mirror, my eyes would be hotter than fire. I didn’t even know when I drifted into sleep. My husband’s odd behavior drove me really crazy last night!
As I opened my eyes, I saw Dave standing before the king-sized mirror knotting his tie.

He looked really handsome and the suit was his perfect size! But his hair? His hair wasn’t combed at all. Why?
God please help me to be the Proverbs 31 virtuous lady. Don’t let me chase my husband out oh God! Give me wisdom. What do I know is on his mind now? What will I do?
I sighed deeply and adjusted on the bed. I cleared my throat because it had become croaky from the last night’s cries. He turned back to look at me. Then he faced the mirror again.

“Good morning” he muttered
“Good morning dear. I waited for you last night. I didn’t even know when you came in. I am so sorry for all that transpired last night. How was your night?” I asked as I sat up. I was weak!
“Good” was all Dave said.

I stood up and walked close to him. He shifted away from the way to avoid contact with me. I looked into his face and really, he was avoiding an eye contact. I didn’t want to start any argument again.

I forcefully held his hand and he relaxed, still looking away. I hugged him and he stiffened.
Our hug was like a lady hugging a pole. He didn’t hold me, he didn’t say anything but I heard his heartbeat. It was beating so fast. I rest my head on his chest to comfort him.
What can I do for you little heart? I asked myself softly.
Dave gently pulled me away.
“I am late” he said, walking towards the bed.

I went to my dressing table and picked up a tail comb.
“Dave, if you don’t want my hand to touch you, at least my comb can?” I asked him. He sat on the arm chair obediently. I went closer and combed his hair gently, praying as I did.
I remembered three days ago while I combed his hair, he was saying

“Mummy, it’s painful.” Like a crying kid
“Painful ke! No o. you are the one that said you wanted afro o. Now, you have it. Endure it. You don buy job” I played along.
We had laughed over it that day. But today, the silence was thick. It was as if a huge wall of Jericho had been built between Dave and I.

Just as I was about putting finishing touches to what I was doing on his head, he stood up abruptly making my hand to be suspended in the air.

He walked to the table, picked his briefcase and hurriedly, he went to the door.

He looked back at me where I was still glued to a spot. He gave me a fake smile.

“I am late. Sorry” he opened the door and left. I breathed out so loud I thought it would wake my baby.

“Isn’t this Dave?” I asked myself.

I walked to the window side and saw as Adamu opened the gate for him to drive out.

“We didn’t even pray together. May God’s eyes never look away from you for once my husband” I prayed silently.

I walked to the small bed, checked Blossom and she was really sucking her thumb. I gently removed it from her mouth.
“Blessed girl! Instead of sucking real food from Mummy’s body, it’s your hand you want to finish eating ” I said softly and pecked her forehead.

I picked up my Bible, went beside my bed and knelt down to pray.

Everything around me needs prayers!

“God, thank you for giving me Dave. No matter what happens, I love him so much. I am afraid that he is going through some hard time now that he doesn’t want me to know about. God, tell me something. You told me to marry him. I have done so. Then, don’t leave me alone in this…”

I was babbling on and on as I usually did when I talked to God. I have grown to a point where I have made him my friend. I love God! He listens!

“Turn back!” he said and I did

“Stand!” My Spirit said again. I obeyed.

The only thing I could see was my husband’s laptop. It was closed but was blinking on and off. I felt peace that that was what God want me to see.

As I walked towards it, my heartbeat increased rapidly.

What is it oh Lord?”
“Daughter, my grace is sufficient for you” I heard. I sighed heavily.

There must be something problematic in there!
As I walked to the laptop, I made the sign of the cross, closed my eyes deeply before opening.

It was the browser that came forth. I relaxed and closed the page. Then, I went to the Recent Folder. It was his videos and some office document that were in there. I checked his video folder. It was just Joyful Noise, Let it Shine, Akeelah and the Bee and the Madea series that were there. I smiled.
My husband and black American Movies though!
What is it that God wants me to see then?”
I opened the Browser page again. I clicked down the history cache and what I saw threw me off balance into the armchair- Porn sites!

Dave? My David? My husband! Porn?! God forbid! When did that start? How?

I started shaking

I closed the browser and stared into blank space like a lunatic.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. Not Dave! Not someone I looked up to for spiritual guidance. Not someone that preaches against all these vices in church. Obviously not Dave!

I resumed my crying session. Whatever happens should happen o. I am ready for battle between us. I am ready to fight this. Why would Dave cheat on me?

I felt he had cheated on me with a thousand ladies he might have seen their unclothedness. I was pained!

If he had started doing this before we got married, I will never forgive him for being untruthful to me. If he just started, I will never ever ever forgive or forget because it means I am not enough for me.

“Liz…” the Holy Spirit called me in his familiar tone but I waved the still voice off.
This is fire for fire!
No wonder!

No wonder he no longer found it interesting to talk to me.

No wonder my naked body wasn’t appealing to his eyes again.

My tummy had become bigger in his eyes and the stitched spot of the cesarean session that was done on my body when I wanted to give birth to Blossom had made me disgusting to look at!
No wonder!
No wonder Dave!

I thought i married a perfect christian fit for the kingdom of heaven!

I thought I married someone someone that would guide me through the heavenly way.

“Liz, take it easy… ” The Spirit spoke again.

I beat my lap to shake His voice.

“It seems the Holy Spirit doesn’t understand at all.” I said to myself

Where is the guy I thought I married

Somebody should talk to me please!

I wept so tirelessly!

Episode 3

I was determined to show Dave hell when he comes back.

The offences were that he cheated on me and also that he never told me about it.

“If he had told you about it, would you have been able to contain it?” My Guide whispered to my ears.

“See, right now Holy Spirit, I am not ready for peace. I am not happy. I kept myself for this guy. I never knew a man. No man had seen my unclothedness apart from him and now, he is not contended!” I ranted on and on.

I picked my Bible and put it aside. I didn’t want any chance for God thing this afternoon.
God is too peaceful o!

When it’s time to fight, we should. If he comes now and I am submissive to him, he would really not know what offence he has committed.

I flipped through the Christian channels on the cable and they were talking about forgiveness, tolerance, understanding, prayer bring every yokes down. Even the Islamic stations bombarded my ears with not allowing the devil into our marriages by our mistakes.

I felt like screaming!

The Spirit must love me so much to still persistently speak to me.

“See, a woman needs the wisdom of God. If a marriage works, its kudos to the woman. If it doesn’t work again, it’s a failure on her part”

“How? How?” I said on. Is it because the Holy Spirit is a spirit that he can’t feel what I am feeling? Woman’s fault ke!

“See, a wise woman builds her home but the foolish one pulls it down with her own hands. Hence, to build this home, you need wisdom”

“How else can I be wise Lord? I am very sure I am in your will. Or, am I not?” I was almost crying. I had fallen on my face with great anguish.

“You are in God’s will daughter but that does not shield you from life’s storms. God has not promised Christians a storm free life but he promised us his protection even in the storm”.

“Ah! But you said you will not tempt us more than we can bear Lord. This is beyond my capability. Other women can handle it but I can’t. I really can’t”.

“You have never really farmed but let me tell you this. It is very dangerous for vegetables at the very tender age to survive. They would need a flower bed and camping to survive through the harsh weather and others. When they grow to maturity, no one remembers the suffering they have been through o. “

“Oh God!” his words were hitting me hard.

“Look at you and your twin sister Elizabeth. You think raising you was easy? Twins are not desirable when they are young o but look at you both now; it’s sweet to desire twins. That’s how marriage is. It has its ups and down especially when it is at the tender stage but now, it’s up to you what becomes of your family. Don’t fail the test. The devil is at the door. Fight harder! Don’t give up!” He concluded and there was silence.

I had my bath with the Laurel lavender soap Dave brought me from France.

“If you want to catch your husband and put him in the mood, bath with this soap. My dear, I love lavender!” he told me when he gave the expensive soap to me last month.

I also oiled my body in lavender lotion and sprayed my body. Then, I wore one very beautiful, scanty night-gown that I bought at PEP last month.

I had taken care of the whole house and it was very well scented. The lavender air freshener was at work really good.

My mother in law came over in the morning and had taken Blossom out to return in the evening. What a chance!

I had pounded yam and prepared Dave’s Egusi elemi meje soup (with dried fish, bush meat, snails, crayfish, stockfish, chicken…name it all). I even took my time to make him a bottle of citrus squash!

I was very attractive. I checked myself in the mirror and no! This is me!

I just took his briefcase and ran up the stairs. His eyes followed me and he smiled.

“Foolish guy! He has been giving me attitude o. Now, he sees me looking good and he is smiling. He doesn’t even know if it’s a trap!”
He ran after me to the room like a cock courting a hen. He was all over me but I really played him.

He caught me around the waist and I wriggled out like an earthworm that encountered salt. He looked at me and was disappointed

“You are looking very nice this evening” he said.

“Haven’t I been looking good before?” I asked

“Hmmm, you have always been but since you gave birth to Blossom, you have really not been attractive. You know?” he was saying.
Really! So, that’s the problem!

That’s why you have been watching porn to see well appealing girls” I wanted to say but I ate my words.
“Really? Tell me something. If not, nothing for you tonight” I went on.

It worked! He started talking
“Since you gave birth, you won’t wear brassiere. Everything would be down like whatever. Your hair would be scattered all over your head. You will wear big clothes and you won’t walk so smartly. It was always you and Blossom. You had time for her than for me.”
Ah! My hubby is a kid o!

What is he saying?
So my appearance and the devotion to child raising is the wahala now, abi?

“Well, I have heard you. But you like my dressing today?”

“Yes I do” he said sweetly, running his eyes over my body

“That’s why you didn’t ask after our baby?” I said and he opened his mouth slightly, guilt on his face.

“That’s true. Where is Blossy?” he asked

“Granny came to carry her”

“Wow! Good! We should do that once in a while” he said, grinning happily.

“Your food is on the dining table” I told him and he sat up on the bed, fuming and looking angry.

“What’s it? Eat now” I teased him

“No! it’s you I want.”

“Pounded yam and Egusi o” I said again

“Lizzy stop!” he came close, pulled the blanket away and he saw the leggings. He looked perturbed and looked into my face

“What’s this?”

“Leggings.”

“Leggings?”

“Yes! Its time to sleep” I said and slid into the blanket again.

“Liz, It seems you have forgotten your bible but I will remind you. First Corinthians chapter 7 verse 5 says ‘The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband…” he was saying when I cut him shut abruptly

“Seems you have forgotten that the verse you just quoted isn’t complete. I will tell you. The last part of that verse also says ‘likewise also the husband hath not power over his own body but his wife.” I was almost screaming.

My revenge turning into hate.

“Yes, agreed! No one is disputing that fact. But the next verse also says ‘Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer’…except during fast! Don’t you understand your Bible again?”

I saw that it was choking him. I was enjoying the banter. I sat up and faced him.

“Well, Mr. Interpreter of the Bible! I am fasting! I am having sex fast so let’s respect that”

“What!” he exclaimed

“Dave, I really do not want to speak but since it seems you are ready for a biblical fight, I am ready for you so that you will know that khaki no be leather!”

“ehn ehn!..” he said, looking at me in disbelief.

This obviously can’t be my humble Lizzy. Lizzy never disrespects me.

“Yes! Khaki no be leather.” I repeated intentionally.

That is perhaps the most abusive word I know and he looked on in amazement.

“For some days now, you have been giving me attitudes, refusing to look into my face, you have refused to carry Blossom or play with her. You have found my touch irritating and now because you are on heat like a dog, you are coming to me. Mba! It doesn’t work that way”

I was talking so emphatically that I didn’t know when I compared him to a dog.

He clapped his hands together still surprised

“Lizzy! Lizzy! Is it because I wanted to lie with my own wife that I have become a dog? Is that why you have the effrontery and audacity to tell me I am a dog? Liz, you compared me to a dog! Liz…”

When I saw that it was getting into his heart really deep, I switched to the defense mood automatically. So I stood abruptly and picked up my Bible. I opened it so fast that it looked like I was being controlled by some elements.

“Let me also read this passage to you my dear husband. Malachi chapter 2 verses 14. ‘You ask why? It is because the Lord is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.”

“Jesus! Liz, what are you saying? What are you talking about? When did I cheat on you? How?” He asked on, looking at me with such pitiful face that I felt like I was a mad woman. I shook my head.

“I am not mad! I know what I am saying!” I told myself loudly.
Confusion set in and I didn’t know what to do. I cannot believe its me teasing my husband with what rightly belongs to him.

Too much of some kinds of movies though! They taught me!

‘What is happening to me? Is this how to honor my husband? Isn’t this disrespect of the highest order? See his face, looking like he wants to cry!’ I thought to myself.

“I didn’t bargain for this Lord. I never ever imagined shouting at Dave. I am confused. I am so so confused. Why did he cheat on me? Why has he been unfaithful to me? Why?” I started crying again!

Oh my tears duct! It’s always falling my hands! It doesn’t obey me at all! The tears flowed.

Dave stood up from the bed and came close to me. He reached for me but I avoided his hands

“Don’t touch me! Your hands are filthy…Dave, they are so filthy…” I continued in my cries.

Dave started sniffing wetly too. I looked into his eyes- he was crying. I stopped crying. I tried to see clearly from the clouds of my tears.
“What is it?” I asked.

Why is he crying? Is he really cheating on me? As i Saw him crying profusely, i became afraid.
“Liz….” He was saying when he stopped again. He cried on and on.

Jesus!

Help me not to die from my anxiety o!

I am very mad because he was watching porn. Because of porn and nothing more! Can I bear him telling me he has a girlfriend or he probably has a child out-of-wedlock? In fact, I will die!

I looked into his face so deeply and he looked into mine. His stream of tears mixed with the small puddles of sweat on his face to make a sea!

I have never seen him cry before!

Everything is strange!

“Liz, I have a confession to make” he said and held my two hands. I started shaking. I was speechless.

“Please forgive me Liz” he said on shaking with tears so badly. I stood up.

Holy Spirit, is this also a storm that would pass?

I really needed strength!

I was weak. My knees couldn’t carry me.

I have never bargained for this

Where is the guy I married?

What does this guy want to say?

Oh God! I’m scared!!!
