FALCONETS TRAGEDY: Player hospitalised after NFF fail to pay off team

by Samm Audu

Falconets defender Mary Ologbosere has been referred to the traumatic unit of a hospital in Abuja after she suffered from depression following the inability of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to pay the players on arrival from the U20 World Cup in Papua New Guinea.

The 18-year-old defender lost her father while the Falconets were at the World Cup and the entire family are counting on her to come back and bury him.

However, on return from the World Cup Wednesday afternoon, they were all shocked when they were each paid a measly 10,000 Naira to return to their various homes.

A shocked Ologbosere cried all through the night and had to be rushed to hospital as a result, where she has now been admitted at the traumatic unit.

“She is totally shattered by this heartless treatment,” simply reported a team official at the Serob Legacy Hotel.

“It’s truly a pathetic case.”
The 10,000 Naira paid each player was the only money they received from the NFF since they opened training camp for the World Cup earlier this year.

The team have vowed not to leave the hotel they were booked into until they have got their cash.

At the World Cup, they won two matches, against Spain and Canada.

It would also be recalled that the Nigeria U19 team led by Manu Garba were also sent away on their return from an invitational tournament in Suwon, South Korea, after they were paid a paltry 5,000 Naira each.

Super Falcons Grumble Ahead Showdown Vs Kenya, Owed Bonuses, Allowances By NFF

Allnigeriasoccer.comunder stands that Nigeria’s female national team, Super Falcons, have complained that they have not yet been paid their bonuses by the Nigeria Football Federation ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Kenya in their final Group B fixture.

The players have not received bonuses since the qualifying stage, including the home and away fixtures versus Senegal.

During the training camp in Abuja before the squad departed for Cameroon, players and officials of the Super Falcons didn’t get any allowance from the NFF.

The Florence Omagbemi-led side have no injury worries ahead of tomorrow’s clash against Kenya at Stade Municipal de Limbe, amid speculations in the local media that Guingamp striker Desire Oparanozie is nursing an injury.

Nigeria will qualify for Tuesday’s semifinal if they can avoid defeat against Kenya no matter the outcome of the other group game between Ghana and Mali.

Sasol Banyana Banyana stormed into the semi finals of the 2016 CAF African Women’s Cup of Nations after walloping the Pharaohs of Egypt 5-0 in their last Group A match in Limbe, Cameroon on Friday, 25 November 2016.

Goals from Andisiwe Mcgoyi, Nothando Vilakazi, Refiloe Jane, Linda Motlhalo and Jermaine Seoposenwe gave the South Africans all the three points plus a massive boost following a second half goal glut which stunned the Egyptians.

Mcgoyi opened the scoring on the 28th minute when she managed to tap the ball into an empty net after some great play from the right wing by Nompumelelo Nyandeni to take a slender 1-0 lead at half time.

Nyandeni who played a big role in creating the opening goal was substituted for Refiloe Jane in the 59th minute after a bad knock. A minute later Nothando Vilakazi scored the second goal for the South Africans after some miscommunication between the Egyptian centre backs and her goalkeeper.

Refiloe Jane who had just got onto the pitch was granted a golden opportunity in the 62nd minute and did not hesitate when she put the ball in the back of the net for Banyana’s third goal.

Jermaine Seoposenwe also raised her hand and scored the fourth goal in the 67th minute.

Coach Ellis brought in youngster Amogelang Motau and Motlhalo late in the match, and Motlhalo didn’t take long before she scored the fifth and final goals for the rampant Banyana Banyana in the 82nd minute to register the biggest scoreline of the tournament so far.

“I am very happy with the performance today. The players knew what they had to do, I did not need to motivate them at all, we will play whoever qualifies between Ghana and Nigeria and see how far we go in the tournament,” said an elated Ellis
Sasol Banyana Banyana will know their semi-final opponent on Saturday after the last group B matches, where either Nigeria or Ghana will top the group.

The semi finals will take place on Tuesday, 29 November 2016, at Limbe Omnisports Stadium.

Nigeria's Falcons to smash past Kenya to avoid rampant hosts Cameroon

Defending champions Nigeria’s Super Falcons will hope to smash past debutants Kenya Saturday to win Group B and avoid hosts Cameroon in the semi-finals of the women’s AFCON.

The Lionesses of Cameroon finished top of Group A after winning all three group games, while South Africa were runners up after a 5-0 spanking of Egypt in their final group match.

Nigeria coach Florence Omagbemi was disappointed with the South African referee for not awarding the Falcons a penalty when star forward Asisat Oshoala was brought down inside the box by the Ghana goalkeeper.

The 1-1 draw with perennial arch-rivals Ghana has brought the Falcons back to earth after a big 6-0 win over fellow West Africans Mali in their opening game.

A second win for the Falcons could well earn them a more manageable semi-final against Banyana Banyana of South Africa.

Kenya have already been eliminated after they were trounced 3-1 by Mali after they lost by the same scoreline to Ghana.

Falcons target remains a 10th trophy and they will enhance this aspiration with an expected walloping of the Kenyans Saturday afternoon in Limbe.

The other Group B match between Ghana and Mali will be expected to be more of a contest as Mali have revived their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds of this biennial competition.

The win by Mali now means they only have to upset the Black Queens from Ghana to advance to the semi-finals.

South Africa Coach: Bring On Super Falcons!

By James Agberebi:

South Africa head coach Desiree Ellis has claimed that her team are already looking forward to a meeting with the Super Falcons of Nigeria in the semi-final of the Africa Women's Cup of Nations on Tuesday, Comple tesportsnigeria.com reports.

The South Africans confirmed their progress into the last four following their emphatic 5-0 win against Egypt on Friday.

The Falcons however are yet to book their place into the semi-finals as they have to avoid defeat against already eliminated Kenya in Saturday's Group B tie.

Ellis also identified the Black Queens of Ghana as another team Banyana are anticipating a clash with in the semi-finals.

"I don’t think I had to motivate the players because they knew what was at stake (against Egypt)," Ellis told Cafonline.

"We created a lot in the first half, and when we started stretching them and created openings, we scored. It is not a dream but we had the belief.

"We always had the belief that we could play better. We wanted to make sure we get the result we needed. We had always been creating the chances and hopefully going forward, we can take more chances.

"If you want to win you have to play against all teams. We have to plan for either Ghana or Nigeria. It doesn’t matter which team we play because we will have to play either of them."

Chiejine, Okobi: Falcons Will Not Underrate Kenya

By James Agberebi:

Super Falcons assistant coach Ann Chiejine has assured that the team will approach their last Group B clash against already eliminated Kenya on Saturday, at the 2016 Africa Women' s Cup of Nations, with all the seriousness it deserves.

The Falcons are on four points and must avoid defeat against Kenya to guarantee qualifying for the semi-finals.

"We are here for business we will be ready to play against Kenya. The players are looking forward to the match," former Nigeria goalkeeper Chiejine told Cafonline.

"Every team qualified is a good team and we are leaving no stone unturned. We know them (Kenya) and we will play as if it is our first match. Every team is as good as winning the championship."

Falcons midfielder Ngozi Okobi also echoed Chiejine's thoughts ahead of the game against Kenya.
She said: "My first match was against Ghana. I saw that the midfield was collapsing against Ghana and that is exactly what I came on to do.

"Our expectation is to win all games and playing against Kenya is no child’s play."

I don't still think she has found her form yet, in the last 30 minutes she was plain tired. Okon mostly allowed her to have a free role but now she has to do alot of running which might be affecting her.

That's exactly what I am talking about. she was by far the outstanding Super Falcon in the World Cup.

The only good thing she did yesterday was that goal.

I just wish she replicates that form in this tournament.

After the world cup, okobi was no longer herself really and even struggled in Washington spirits in the NWSL( ordega's club) before going over to Sweden. The good thing about okobi though is that she's a very good passer of the ball, she may have lost everything but definitely not her vision. Though Rita is more experienced and active, l still prefer okobi slightly, but then having any of them on the pitch is still fine by me.

I'm surprised, because with the game against Kenya, we should have tried out the likes of ijeoma obi and Gloria iroka to see if they are more creative midfielders or better passers of the ball than Rita and Halimatu, but they were not used at all. We need players who can put the ball at the feet of oshoala and ordega easily, and l hope oparanozie would no longer sit on the bench at this stage of the competition, anyway let's see how it goes. Thumbs up to the coaching crew for the job done on the team so far after that poor latter era of 2015.

Ellis confident of downing Nigeria

Desiree Ellis coach of South Africa during the Women Africa Cup of Nations.

South African Women's national team caoch Desire Ellis says facing the Nigerians is a daunting task, but they are confident of victory.

Speaking from Cameroon ahead of their semi-final clash against the Super Falcons, Ellis believes the 2016 CAF Women's Championships is very crucial.

Banyana Banyana are fresh from a 5-0 win against Egypt as they booked their spot in the knockout stages, and says her charges are excited for the semifinal.

“Playing against Nigeria brings back many memories and emotions, and this encounter will be no different," said Ellis.

“When we look back to the day when I started playing international football, I am honoured to lead Banyana Banyana into this much-anticipated clash.

“We have a worthy opponent, the defending champions who have a better history than us in the tournament and in our meetings – we have to respect that, no two ways about it.

“But when we get onto the pitch it’s 11 versus 11 and if we get the tactics right we could just come out victorious.”

The ex-Banyana international adds that her players are motivated for this encounter, emphasising that their mission is to reach the final and bag the continental crown.

“Everybody is excited, everybody is raring to go. A lot of the players know this is an opportunity to make history by getting to the final and winning it – but first we have to go past our nemesis,” adds Ellis.

“The lovely thing is that every player is raising their hands in terms of selection for this match because this is a kind of encounter where players do not need motivation – any clash against Nigeria is like a cup final.”

The tie will be staged at State Limbe Omnisport in Limbe, Cameroon getting underway at 20:00 SA Time.

Boastful Banyana Banyana stand between Nigeria and 10th AFCON crown

Banyana Banyana of South Africa

A tough-talking South Africa stand between Nigeria and a 10th women’s AFCON title when both teams clash in the semi-finals of the tournament tonight in Limbe.

After a difficult start during which they were held by Zimbabwe, they smashed past Egypt 5-0 to go into this clash with their confidence sky-high.

Banyana Banyana's confidence will be further boosted by the fact that they edged past the defending champions in the 2012 tournament in Equatorial Guinea.

“We are capable of shocking Nigeria,” declared South Africa striker Jermaine Seoposenwa, one of five different scorers against Egypt at the weekend.

“The goals we scored can only be good for our confidence going into this game.

“And we have the team to win this game.”

Banyana coach Desire Ellis was equally bullish about her team’s chances in only her first major championship as coach.

“In football nothing is impossible, you just have to have the belief,” said the former Banyana skipper.

“As a group we want to win the gold, that is why we are here. But we have to be at the top of our game.”

Ellis will come to face-to-face with a friend and former Nigeria captain Florence Omagbemi, who is also calling the shots in her first major championship from the sidelines.

“I am happy to play against her (Ellis), she’s also looking forward to the game,” said the Super Falcons coach who in her playing day was a swash-buckling central defender.

Omagbemi also maintained her team are in Cameroon to defend the title they won two years ago in Namibia.

“We are fully prepared and focused. We came here to defend our trophy,” she said.

Experienced defender Onome Ebi as well as tournament leading scorer with six goals Asisat Oshoala have recovered fully from knocks suffered in their last game against Kenya.

Omagbemi has also been satisfied with the introduction of Ngozi Okobi in the middle of the park.

“Okobi in the middle has been a plus to the team,” she remarked.

The winners of tonight’s showdown will at the weekend most likely battle rampant hosts Cameroon, who are expected to beat Ghana in the first semi-finals today.

Kick-off time is 7pm.

South Africa women's head coach Desiree Ellis has described Tuesday’s semi-final against the Super Falcons of Nigeria in the Africa Women's Cup of Nations as the ‘final before the final’."

This is the fourth time both teams are confronting each other in the semi-final with the Falcons winning it twice and lost one.

Commenting ahead of the game, Ellis while admitting that the game will be tough, said they will draw inspiration from their 2012 AWCON win against the Super Falcons.

"If we are not ready now, then there is a problem," she told cafonline.com.

"We have worked on a few things and we have a plan. It is not just playing Nigeria, you are playing against the defending champions and you need to respect that.

"When we get onto the pitch it will be eleven versus eleven, and it will be who executes the plan the best. We have beaten Nigeria before in 2012 in Equatorial Guinea. In football, nothing is impossible. You need to have the belief which I know we do and you have to execute your plan really well.

"It is the final before the final and it will be extremely tough, and that is what you get in the semi-finals."

Ellis reflected on the final of the AWCON 2000 which Banyana lost to the Falcons.

"That happened in 2000 in South Africa, we lost 2-0 and the game was abandoned due to crowd trouble. Pressure will always be there and there is no running away from it.

"It doesn’t matter how big or small the occasion. You don’t need any motivation playing against Nigeria. And being a semi-final, I don’t think you need to motivate anyone.

"There is no second chance and there is no tomorrow to say we should have done this or that. The players realise what is at stake.

Pressure is not just on me but everyone connected to the game."

And on her relationahip with Falcons head coach, Florence Omagbemi, Ellis said:"Florence (Omagbemi) and I are friends. We have been hugging each other the whole week but when you go on to the pitch, the friendship stops.

"We will be friends after the game. Like she will be going for victory, it will be naïve of me to say we don’t want the victory because it is a semi-final. Our aim from the beginning is to get the gold and it still remains our aim."
