The young girl just was unlucky, though it's still likely some undeserving students would slip through the cracks and get admitted by nepotism.

Those still arguing OAU should have still gone ahead to give her admission just are not ready to face the facts provided here.

FACT:- an error deliberate or otherwise was made in compiling her o'level results

45/64 isn't the same thing as 50/64 the difference is worth about 4%age points

how on earth will someone score 320 and be denied admission. meanwhile someone with 220 and 202 will be admitted into same program. Thats absolute injustice and non sense. Infact candidates with such high marks should be given automatic admission... waec or no waec. what if the 320 is as a result of a whole year tedious preparation, meanwhile waec was written without any special effort. God punish elds...

I just checked her twitter handle and she posted her screening result... what i find is that she Loaded her BEST 7 subjects, an error on her part? who knws? if she had Loaded 8...she would be over her now aggregate and even crossed d Cut off mark... But that doesn't stop oau frm offering her anoda course....

So her overall average - as OAU did a combination of 50% mark from JAMB and 50% mark from School Cert - is: (80+70.3)=75.15% (which we rounded up to 75.2%).

With that mark, she ranks number 103 on the list of the students who took Medicine as first Choice.

The total admission quota for Medicine in OAU is 100, and that includes UTME and Direct Entry).

Clearly although Aror did well, her mark was NOT good enough to earn her admission on merit to read Medicine in Ife. Her mark of 75.2% is clearly below our cut-off mark (which was initially 78%, but we later reduced to 77.7%). Between her mark of 75.2% and 77.7%, by the way, there were 56 other candidates who scored higher than her but did not make the cut-off. For example, two people had 77.6%, two other people had 77.5%, four people had 77.4% etc.
Having presented the detailed facts about Aror's case, let me also help the many young Nigerians who may be accessing this site with more information on admission as I see a lot of misrepresentation, falsehood, and misunderstanding from the comments that various people had made on this case.

1. Admission into Nigerian Universities are considered on three grounds based on the nationally specified criteria (which I think ought to be reviewed now, by the way):
A. Merit =45% (This covers all candidates from the country - and it is automatic admission once you meet the cut-off mark)
B. Catchment = 35% (this refers to those in the states specified as catchment area for each University: For OAU, that is Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Osun and Ekiti)
C. Educationally disadvantaged states (ELDS)=20% = This refers to all the 19 Northern States, and Ebonyi, Rivers and Bayelsa.

So, someone from Delta such as Aror with 75.2% will not get admission into Medicine in OAU automatically as she is only considered on merit criterion and she does NOT meet the specified cut-off, but someone with the same mark from Kwara (which is in the North Central zone) may get automatic admission with the same mark based on the consideration of ELDS if 75.2% is the specified cut-off for ELDS for Medicine.

2. When a candidate chooses a highly competitive course like Medicine in a top-rated University like OAU, the competition is very intense. Believe it or not, many of the candidates that made our merit mark had an average of six A1s in school cert coupled with very high UTME mark (above 300). So, a candidate must carefully think over his choice of course and university. For example, if Aror had chosen ANY other course as her first choice for OAU, whe would have made the merit mark and gotten automatic admission, and she would have made the merit mark for Medicine on merit for most Nigerian universities too (but NOT OAU unfortunately).

3. Because of the high demand and competition for very limited spaces, the College of Health Sciences does not consider second choices as a general rule. OAU, for example, was only able to offer admission on UTME platform (Merit + Catchment + ELDS) to less than 3% of her applicants for Medicine, and less than 2% of her applicants for Nursing Science this year.

4. For cases like Aror where the candidadte has made a high mark but does not make the cut-off, what the candidate can sometimes do is to come to the University and try and see if he or she can be considered for other courses. A candidadte DOES NOT get considered automatically for a course she has not applied to in JAMB. A candidadte is ONLY automatically considered for the course he or she has applied for with respect to a particular university.

Unfortunately, Aror has left her case too late as all admission lists have been submitted for this year.

This your post dey pain. Kai, I just got reminded of how difficult it is to score 200 in JAMB. Definitely, anything above 250 is a combo of talent, intense, tedious preparation and luck. The thing is really paining me for the girl. I have email the prof sha with the finding that her o'levels were miscalculated. Let's see how it goes.

In my days, schools were only interested in 5 O'level credits, as in C6 minimum, and then meeting JAMB cut-off point. 320 then was reserved for the very best and enabled automatic admission, provided the 5 credits in the required courses were available. Imagine a decade and a half later, someone with such an exceptional background could not get into the same Nigerian university. Na wah ooh.

The problem I see here is that someone in OAU calculated the lady's scores wrongly, whether intentionally or mistakenly, but it has cost her an admission. If she had come out earlier, this probably would have been resolved. Mr. Provost, I think Aror's case should be reviewed.

Something I do not understand; she ranked 103 and 100 candidates were admitted... there are 56 other candidates ahead of her who didn't meet the cut-off mark. If 56 candidates scored below the cut-off and also beat her in aggregate scores, how come she missed the list by 3 steps (103-100=3)?

I make bold to say the ethnic diversity in schools in the west is far greater than it is in other parts of the country.
I can reel out names of popular people of other tribes that schooled in the west.
check OAU's list and you would see lots of people from different tribes in Nigeria. even foreigners.

That was in the 80's and early 90's when they retained true federal character but that is no more, I have attended lectures in southwestern university where lectures were given in english with a smattering of yoruba and i felt the odd man out due to language differences! We need to know what the Merit cut off was and whether she beat that merit. Once that is established, the university has to explain! She has no business with catch or ELDS. It is merit she has business with, so we need the merit cut off.

Bros, the ethnic diversity in the west is greater, for sure...There are more easterners, northerners etc in eastern and northern schools than there are westerners in western schools..

Guys, I want us to do something about this...Because it appears the school is at fault...Let's not just talk with mouths, let's do something. I have already sent a message to the honourable prof in charge and believe he will respond. Since we have established that the exceptional young student beat the requirement for merit, we need to do something about it.

I am suggesting a public escalation of the matter..In the papers, TV etc until it comes to the notice of the honourable minister of education..This is if the school can not prove sufficiently why the lady was not admitted even when it can be proven that she got above the school's merit cut off.

The prof looks respectable and maybe he isn't really aware of the mistake. I have emailed him and will wait some days for his response, then we proceed with the next steps. How can somebody work that hard and be denied the fruits of her labour, kai!

Hi, it's possible if she is merit based..45% of the admitted 100 were merit based, meaning 45 people were admitted based on merit. If 56 scored higher than her, then she must be number 101th, which is higher than 103..Though I suspect the 103 might be correct due to approximations.

If you disagree, please post. This is serious.

Adding all togeda will result to 45 which makes extra. subject "physics'' make it a total of 50.


8+5+6+6+5+7+8=45.
