"Fare" (verb) is appropriate in this case. Kindly take note. See example below.

synonyms: get on, proceed, get along, progress, make out, do, manage, muddle through/along, cope, survive; More

On short forms. I insist, "Yes". Short forms for sms. They are expedient when sending text messages. But note, it should be avoided when it is a formal or exam situations, or as the case may be.

On "falling", it is most appropriate with falling educational standard, while failing is most appropriate with "failing education system".

It is so sad how our educational system has deteriorated. A friend invited me to come and help him with the test given to applicants for various positions in his company.
The whole vacant positions were for B.Sc Holders in different fields like Engineering, Business Administration, Economics, Geology and so many others.

A total of 67 people were present for the test and believe it or not, only 3 people actually knew the difference between the below words.

More than Half of them kept on typing in short forms thinking they were chatting with their Blackberry or Facebook friends.

How can employer be requesting for First class and 2.1 only while 2.2 and 3rd class can do better.
I know some of my course mates that got 2.1 without meriting it. Going to lecturers for marks and finally to Exams and record for upgrading their GRADE VALUE since Its what Employers need.
Some 2.2 and 3rd class are brilliants but didn't make it because of some factors.
Tell your friend to give lower grades a chance to prove themselves.

a 3rd class graduate i met once. could perfectly operate a cnc lathe machine and knew how to weild using ultra-sonic weilding. (i really wonder where he learnt all that from). this dude has a very poor command of English. yet he possess unbeatable practical knowledge that most first class-queen's-English speaking graduates dont have. then i asked myself. in a field like engineering. why make English languauge a priority? as an engineer 25% efficiency in English is okay. believe me. all those errors highlighted by the op has nothing to do with one's level of skillfullness and efficiency on a practical job. all i just see here is the usual Nigerian mentality.
