While doing that, also start your ground work for applications.

Then post your experience again so we can learn wink
Good luck!

Thanks SirRiddy.
Your input from the onset has been invaluable and it's imperative I continue being proactive (as you would say). The process of mailing grad coordinators and even faculty members has been enervating so far. Evasive grad cords and extremely busy faculty members. However, we can only keep at it and hope it ends well eventually.

All the best.

Congratulations, how do you reconcile the two(2) bolded portion above?. By any yardstick 107 with a minimum section of 24 is a very good score. By the way which maxim are you talking about? grin grin grin

Many schools I plan to apply to stated their requirement for the speaking section as 26, so I guess I'm insufficient in that area.

Your #YesWeCan. cool

Also expecting the best from your side as regards your application.

@OGreene. Thanks.

1. Did they initially give you any funding?
2. What magnitude of funding are you requesting for now?

Master, I deh work o so small bread deh enter. August still far, maybe I sell one kidney take complete the money. grin

@1. They didn't give funding initially but they gave me as well as every other applicants in my department an option to indicate if I wanted assistantship when I was applying.
@2. From what I know, they give funding in terms of tuition waiver and monthly stipends (GA). So that's what I'm requesting. In fact, I'm just waiting for the positive mail from the grad cord coz I have so much faith that I'll get it.

P.S: No sell ur kidney oo. You go need am for Trumpland grin

Wow! Wow! and Wow! Where do I start congratulating from?

Big Congratulations to those with admits already. This is just the beginning of the goodnews. I pray that all Fall 2017 hopefuls on this thread will not only share the 'admit' goodnews, but 'll also share the 'funding' good news.

Congratulations Fam!

I saw the mentions but I knew I was going to be busy all through then till now.

The most painful aspect about a rejection apart from the (application fee and every other expenses incurred) is the fact that you may never know why. I guess my only consolation is that I couldn't attend all the schools at the same time had I gotten all admits in each of the schools.

I remain optimistic about my other chances.

Hello All,

I wrote my IELTS test late last year. I need help on how to forward official copies of my result to schools in US; I checked British Council website but nothing seems to talk about this.

Urgent response pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee.

As much as no one wants to experience rejection wrt applications, it doesn't define the end bro. This particular rejection only helped you prune your choices. All things work together for good. I believe you'll get accepted by other schools you applied to. In fact, that acceptance mail is coming very soon. Cheer up bro.

A big kudos to the folks who constantly ensure the survival and continuity of this thread. Congratulations in advance to those who are awaiting admission (funding) decisions from schools.

I took the TOEFL on Saturday, 11th of February 2017. Even though I am not too pleased with the score, it is expedient that I post my experience.

My preparation was quite rocky, as I was in a strait betwixt two; vacillating between the difficulty of Kaplan and the actual ETS. My first advice is to totally ignore the urge to practice KAPLAN tests. Its a far cry from the actual test. It is filled with recondite passages and utterly disparate questions which belies the TOEFL, presenting it harder than it actually is. The ETS official guide is enough to do the job. Videos by Notefull and ouliogroove on youtube helped me understand the structure of the test and presented sample questions for the writing and speaking section. I also used the official ETS guide, Kaplan text, and a couple of other books in the course of my preparation. I had few hours of intense study which aided (perhaps, marred ) my preparation.

Another key agenda of worthy of note is that ETS allows you to send your TOEFL scores to 4 institutions for free till 10pm before the actual test day. Not many people are privy to this, and I was almost a victim. My procrastination left me with about 20 schools on my radar at the time, making it extremely difficult to make pinpoint decisions. I would definitely narrow it down before my GRE.

I got to the Test centre; JKK, ilupeju, about 30 minutes before 10am and they had begun the process of checking students in. I did the needful, presented my passport, and started in no time. I made sure I was one of the first to enter the hall, as I got the notion that entering late might affect my listening section, especially when the early birds are making so much noise, battling with their speaking section.

I particularly found the Speaking and Listening section easy, maybe because I spent ample time on each question, making sure I reviewed my answers sedulously before moving on to the next. I used tips from ETS official guide to decipher the kind of question to expect and how to avoid common pitfalls. In the course of my 10 minutes break, I hurriedly took my lucozade boost to lubricate the dryness in my throat. I then held random chats with a couple of test takers, asking about their experience and expectations. This was a dry run, to make sure I was well versed for my speaking section.

The speaking section began, with question 1 and 2 seeming quite a walkover. Question 3-6 required more skill, as regards the format and using specific keywords. I tried to be spontaneous, as well as rigid; adhering strictly to the format I learned. Tips from the youtube videos I watched proved invaluable. When I got to the writing section, I was already feeling soporific and this was surprising as I was accustomed to taking practice tests over a long stretch. I did my best in the first part, and had ample time to review my work. I barely finished writing the second part when I ran out of time.

I got my test result on the 17th of February via email.
Total score: 107
Reading: 28
Listening: 30
Speaking: 24
Writing: 25

Preparation continues for the Ultimate GRE. My quest to come up with a catchy maxim like Time2smile's has proved futile, perhaps when I smash the GRE, something better will come up. I am a Fall '18 applicant by the way.

just saw it now, bro it's just one of the decisions, and If you are still applying. Trying and ask the grad coord if the dept prefers a straight PhD or Ms first. I almost applied to LSU PhD until I asked and the grad coord told me that faculty prefers a Ms first and that I should mail to see if anyone was ready to accept me. Even though on the site you could apply to PhD straight. I just used my number 6.

Even the Ms admit sef, no funding yet.

You're correct bro. I asked grad coordinator same question and most of them encouraged me to apply for a straight PhD only if I've got a faculty member who has agreed to be be adviser. But I guess is a case of different strokes for different schools.

Thanks man. You know, I considered almost everything you have said. But the Grad coordinator told me Master's is self-funded and that I should apply directly for the PhD. I asked her if I needed to email any Professor to act as an adviser and she said no but that I should mention his name in my SOP and that it would be relayed to him.

In the course of my research I noticed CuteMorgan got into their Chemistry doctorate program directly and I didn't hear him talk about emailing any Professors so I felt I was in order. His admit and funding emails trooped in back to back as well so I believed they didn't sell me a false word. He did graduate with a 4.55/5 and I didn't however.

I guess they would give a couple Chincos with 169-Q 145-V 2.5-AWA the admit. Nothing spoil. Finally na just 1 admit pesin need sef. Getting all admits is just for self-aggrandizement. grin

See the highlighted part? I dread it more than Jamaican hair especially as the dollar is expected to rise to 650N before the year runs out.

Depends on the schools though but I get your point. A friend of mine in 2015 emailed Professors in Vanderbilt, VirginiaTech, Carnegie Mellon, UIUC, MTU and TTU. At the end of the day, only the latter 2 gave him admits with TTU offering him funding after much begging.

To get free money from USA no easy as we think.

Lol. Not so shocking though, considering that some programs use GRE mainly to screen applications. Thereafter, research experience and research fit as highlighted in your SOP carries more weight (as I've been told). I hope other schools consider our applications favorably.

This held me back from applying to some schools, aside my GRE score which isn't 170/170-Q. I believe other parts of my application were competitive enough for most Msc programs.

But how them wan know say you deh try for other aspects, if your app cannot get in through the door because of GRE requirement? undecided

Need I say more? Your GRE was a stunner. I know your first degree was PRESSID-worthy. Our lack of research experience is the only issue in Nigeria. We do close to no research.
