Your problem is that you always look at everything from a tribal perspective rather than looking at it critically on its own merit.
Accordingly, Igbos brought tribalism into Nigerian politics; unfortunately it had since then backfired on them because they can never form a majority on any issue should everybody also start playing the same game.

Even by the look of things, it would appear (if true) that there was something fishy about the story; because it is unusual for the same country to field more than one candidate for the same UN position at once.
Usually such conflicts are often sorted out internally before reaching the UN voting stage, so that only one candidate ultimately emerges; I would therefore suspect that your Igbo brother may have bypassed or did not respect the outcome of this process, therefore ignoring a sitting president/head of state who would have been at liberty to vote for his own choice of candidate.
