Please, can a good heart recommended a good school (fee waive + G.A role) for PhD in Civil Engineering.

My B.Eng - 3.98, M.Eng- 4.49.

Worry about getting into a good PhD program. The fee waiver and GA part would sort itself out. Your GPA's ok. Get a list of schools you would like to attend, and you can then ask people here to critique for you.

God abeg help us o. This visa stress fit make someone die young o. Somebody go pass all standard test and be accepted by a top college after 2yrs of preparation for f1 visa and still go for interview to hear 'sorry u re not qualified for visa at this time' nor be witchcraft this oyinbo people dey practice for we blacks.

The good news is, if you could get into a top college, you'd not need to worry about the interview. Especially with funding.

This is not personal details....
Any interested candidate can apply for PhD to this particular department

Thank you for your interest in my lab and the graduate school at the University of Virginia (UVA). I do not accept Masters students into my lab, but please keep reading if our PhD program might interest you. To enter a PhD program here, you must apply to UVA and be accepted. Individual labs cannot make arrangements on their own to accept students, but I would be happy to consider having you as a PhD student if you eventually enroll here. Please look at the following 2 web pages, which will introduce you to the programs we offer, and explain how to apply.

With a first class degree, these schools are beneath your profile. Can your work on your GRE to be 320? You need to target the first 50 universities in US. Otherwise you need to go for national ranking schools not the regional universities you have up here

Please just like mayflow said, go and re-write GRE, don't waste your effort, energy and GPA on just those schools alone. Apply to highly ranked schools in the top 50 of your program,be ambitious and don't think lowly of yourself. Even though you might still need to apply to one or two save schools.

Some schools are very strict on ONLY FALL intake. You'll need to check with each school. If you're getting sponsored, you need to be sure you're getting real value for your money. This means, you'll want to go to a decently-ranked school. And if you want funding, top schools are also your best bet.

According to this list, https://ideas.repec.org/top/top.agecon.html, the top 5 AEC departments are UC Berkeley, Cornell, Iowa State and U Maryland.

Either way, you need to work on your profile. Your GPA is set, you can't do anything about it. If you didn't do research during the NYSC, it doesn't count for much. Your work experience lacks context. There's no way to compare where you currently work with established companies.

Which leaves you with two things to handle very well. Your Statement of Purpose and GRE. You can't spend a week on your SoP and expect to kick ass with it. Except you're a really good writer, your best bet is to find rock-solid ones online, think long and hard on how to convey your life's experience, and future goals, and write accordingly.

It's a big bonus if you can get good LORs. If you can, retake the GRE, the higher you score, the better.

Apply to 2 schools from those 5 above, one from 11 - 15, another one from 18 - 26. Adjust to your taste and pocket.

All the best!

Vo: Good morning
Me: Good morning

Vo: what's your study plan?
Me: I'm going to southern arkansas university for a masters degree in computer and information science which is a 30 credit hours course which I'm expected to complete in 2 years. I'd take courses in advanced programming, mobile computing, database management systems....
VO: cuts in... What did you study at undergraduate level?
Me: physics Education
Vo: so why did you choose this MCIS?
Me: I work with a group of e business and alternate banking channels experts. With financial inclusion hitting a reasonable figure in Nigeria, the trends in the banking industry points at making banking more personal hence the need for new technologies like wearable banking systems which I'd be working on in the USA.
Vo: please pick up your passport on Thursday.

Congrats.. Welcome on board and enjoy your stay over there

Visa approved this morning at Lagos Consulate by the purportedly mean Chinese-looking guy. After dishing out blue papers, it finally got to my turn.

VO: Good morning Ma'am
Me: Good morning
VO: What are you going to do in the US?
Me: I am going to study for a PhD in Materials Engineering at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville
VO: Cool. Pass me your documents
Me: [Obliged]
VO: [Critically peruses my I-20 while I stare at him like one mumu girl and then he exclaims...] Wow! You got a full package from UVA! UVA is a great school. I am so excited for you and I can imagine you can't wait to start! Wow! This is nice! Are you excited?
Me: Yes, I am. Thank you. [At this point, I was just too shocked because it was not kind of interview I have been hearing about on here. I expected those their standard questions, which I had ready answers for]
VO: When last were you in the US?
Me: February last year, on vacation
VO: I am still so excited for you!
Me: Thank you
VO: Where is your husband?
Me: He is outside
VO: [Types and stares at his screen...] Honestly, everything looks perfect..... [Hands me white paper]. Enjoy Your studies!
Me: Thank you

End of interview that did not feel like interview. After all my prepped-up answers sad wink grin

Anyways, thanks guys and ladies. You guys have been of immense help on this thread and on the GRE thread. I try my best to help out to the best of my ability. I wish everyone success in their interviews.

Congrats and enjoy your stay over there

What's your GRE and TOEFL score?
Civil might be lucky to get into this schools but
These schools are not really safe when it comes to funding due to competition. Try and contact Profs before applying...
Or better still, seek extra safe schools...
