I find it very stupid and silly for a man to kneel before a woman all in the name of proposing. We are Africans and simply because we were colonized by the Europeans doesn't automatically make us Europeans. Why is it difficult for us to copy innovation and improve technologically but rather stupid customs that add no value to our existence as Africans? This trend is becoming more rampant and it is beginning to destroy the core values and norms that makes us Africans. I'm not in anyway chauvinistic or a sexist but I believe a lot of people would agree with me that this is stupid. |

uyiekpenn:Even having a phone, typing these in English language and posting on the internet is alien to Africa. Internet, Phone, English language are all alien to Africa and part of Western innovation and discovery. |

Listen, you can't pick & choose what's Un-African, while you're sitting there typing on western technology. You can't have one foot in & one foot out. Go all the way if you're such an afro-centric. Go beat your village drums & call for a meeting about this, instead of ranting online, which on its own is Un-African. Hypocritical much? |

ZarZar:there are many great countries in the world that enjoy technology and scientific innovations and yet still preserve their identity. Embracing science does not in anyway have to interfere with your identity and cultures but welcome to Africa, a land of confused identity, black people with low self esteem thinking they are enlightened...What could be more pathetic |

live and let live. each person is the master of his/her own destiny. et em live out their lives. Nigeria has over 200 ethnic groups and Africa has over a thousand. u can't even speak for the whole of Nigeria not to talk of Africa. |

I don't have time to waste on that shit. Once I am certain that she's the one for me, I will go to her people the African way to ask for her hand in marriage. If they accept and she too accepts(which I am sure she will) then we cool, If they refuse and we couldn't convince them then I will keep searching. I am not saying you should stop proposing, do it if you like but make sure her family accepts you otherwise you're setting yourself up for a big confusion. I mean, what if she says yes and her family say NO and mean it? You will start looking for who to disobey? Cool, but who will you turn to when love turns sour.? Lastly, before you propose or accept proposal please make sure you know the person. Don't think the character we present while dating is the real us. Get to know our family and our background to avoid stories that touch. Most married men today are married to at least three people. 1. The person he thought he married. 2. The person he actually married. 3. The person she became in his house. |

realmindz:But this is your personal opinion, we're not talking countries or other people here. Practice what you preach & live like your forefathers. Drop them boxers & go grab some leaves or a loin cloth. Then you can talk about preserving the African identity |

Op i think you just have a repressive and slave mentality about woman which is bad...Proposing to a woman doesn't in any way portray any un-African culture. The post Above only shows how you view and value women in ur culture...and come to think of it, the woman will start using Ur name once u r married, will review relationship with friends, give birth and her body damaged and so on... probably that will be d only romantic thing u will offer her for life. #Changeyourmindsetaboutwomen #Questforsocialreformation. |

realmindz:The same way not everybody is sensible. You're prime example. Just say the gesture doesn't appeal to you, finish. Because it's difficult to take you serious when you're speaking against the lifestyle that you live. |
| Re: It Is Very Un-African To Kneel Before A Woman All In The Name Of Proposing by realmindz: 11:01am On Jun 03, 2017 |
ZarZar:Guess what, I'm actually indifferent about how anyone wishes to propose. But u saying embracing science and technology is inseparable from culture and identity is the greatest myth ever. Then I gave you examples of great countries doing well with their preserved cultures. But u and many others with African slave mentality, inferiority complex are the real hypocrites |

"It is also very un-African to use a toilet, because admit it, its wasn't our invention in the first place." -uyiekpenn 2017. Go back to shiting in the bush OP, and dump your smartphone while you are at it. Don't forget to burn down your house and build an African styled hut |
| Re: It Is Very Un-African To Kneel Before A Woman All In The Name Of Proposing by Nobody: 12:39pm On Jun 03, 2017 |
realmindz:Guess what? It's a free world. People are allowed to move on with the times if they want to. Because it's the same hypocrites like you that'll expect the govt. to transform their village into Trent-on-sea. Africa is the most backwards continent on Earth & yet you still expect us to hold on to outdated beliefs that have served us no real purpose for generations. Tell me, what have preserving culture done except pull us back ? Perhaps it's time to change strategy, ditch what is not longer useful in the modern age & keep what is, so we don't totally lose ourselves. Kneeling to propose doesn't take anything away from you if you already know who you are. A couple of minutes tops, it takes & that strips away your identity? Are you kidding me? I think you're just grasping at straws to make an invalid point. |

Jayceon:TBH, to me, it really doesn't matter. I'm not much of a details person, I'm more about the bigger picture. Kneeling or not kneeling, if you're a jackass you'll remain one no matter how much you try to act like a gentleman infront of other people. Hence I'm rarely moved by your garden variety, corny moves some guys pull to score points. Just be original & genuine, chances are, I'll sense it instantly if it's coming from the heart no matter how "unromantic" it may seem to the eyes of other people. |

realmindz:Perhaps we're just on different intellectual levels. While you still reason like a pea-brained, club carrying, cave ape, the rest of us have moved on & are more concerned about bigger things than kneeling. |
| Re: It Is Very Un-African To Kneel Before A Woman All In The Name Of Proposing by realmindz: 1:08pm On Jun 03, 2017 |
ZarZar:you know why you have a challenge in comprehension?? From my point, it was clear I was indifferent in the manner anyone wishes to propose, I made it clear to you that contrary to the point u raised regarding embracing foreign cultures along with scientific innovations, it was however very possible to retain our cultures and still enjoy technological breakthroughs in which I gave examples of countries who do. But it's a pity it's so hard for you to comprehend and you type a lot of trash that has little to do with my opinions.... ![]() |
| Re: It Is Very Un-African To Kneel Before A Woman All In The Name Of Proposing by Nobody: 1:16pm On Jun 03, 2017 |
Okay. What exactly are the core values and norms that make us Africans? And how does kneeling to propose to a woman threaten those values? What do you propose we do instead? What is the traditional, African way of proposing? |

realmindz:LOL! That's because your opinion is senseless. Why should I regard it? You're indifferent to how people propose & yet you took time to write about it? Now tell me, who reasons like a little goldfish here? You're not going to get a "to the point" response because your own way of thinking is confused & riddled with contradictions. We can embrace technology & still preserve our culture? Says who? Because you say so? Maybe the guy that kneels to propose is also picking & choosing. It's ridiculous to think just because someone chooses to do something, it automatically means he's lost his culture. If you can preserve culture with technology, surely you can still incorporate other things as well, without losing your sense of identity. |

I 've never read nor heard were they said it's an african thing....everything boils than to personal choice but i think people go on their knees just to prove something, either to show humility or to show love expressions and seriousness. |

uyiekpenn:God bless you. I ain't kneeling down for shiii. I ain't wearing a suit on my wedding day(what is "WHITE WEDDING" ?). IT is a shame that we've held the White-man's culture in such high pedestal. We have been colonized mentally. You gotta love the Indians. They've preserved their culture. But naija? For where??! we love to form Yankee. |

What's African with people just living their lives how they feel they're gonna be creating the memories for their futures? If Ur down with the kuntaKinte stuff, you best go for it and stop bitching on about irrelevancies out here. I can tell you the very idea of picking on Kneeling-Proposal as aberrant to our courtship socio-cultural norms and behavioral structures itself is about as petty and dead on arrival as furrk! Furkk, these good pple ought to bash you for the waste of their mb in reading and then trying to correct the inherent id10cy in the topic! Best do you, OP; and let other people do them! |
