Yippie! I scaled the dreaded Houston POE.

If you will recall my story about how I, hubby and son applied for dropbox, were called for interview and denied visa  in Abuja despite multiple travels to the U.S. I went to Lagos 2 weeks after and got my visa approved by God's grace so on this journey, I also prayed to God to go with me.

I arrived yesterday. So, as we were asked to move forward to wait in line for the CBP officer, I quickly scanned for a cool looking face and stayed there.

My turn...
CBP... Hi
Me ...Hi, hands him over my passport and immigration card
CBP.... checks the card and asked: Are you bringing any food, meat?
Me.. No
CBP..... I can see you have declared cash over 10k. How much do you have?
Me... $12,410
CBP... why are you coming with so much money?
Me.... Because I'm here to have my baby
CBP..Oh! You are pregnant? With my bloated face and obvious belle oooo
Me... yes
CBP... Did you already fill the white paper to declare the amount?
Me.. Yes, then I asked my self, which white paper is this guy talking about? I know I'm supposed to fill that after being stamped in. Then I asked him. Sir, which paper are you talking about? I only filled this one that was given on the plane.
CBP.... Alright, place your fingers on.....   took my fingerprint and picture. So you will step aside for me. I will call an officer to take you to a place where you will fill the form and declare your cash. I did and he immediately calls someone, gave him my passport and the person just directed me to where to go and hands me back my passport.

All these took less than 2 minutes.

I went downstairs and declared the cash and while the  CBP officer was doing his job, I checked my passport and realized the first guy  did not stamp me in so I was hoping this one will stamp me in after but when he was done, he just told me to go so I told him that I've not been stamped in. He said I should have. I told him no. He checked my passport and when he didn't see it,  he said that's weird, how can they admit me in and not stamp my passport. He wanted to place a call to d unit upstairs but then, his colleague said he should call the guy that admitted me in directly so as not to put him trouble. They checked the system to see who it was and said oh! It's the new guy! Me thinking,  no wonder he was asking for white paper.  Na so dem call am oooo. D guy said he will come down to stamp it. I come begin dey wait.  I waited for like 20min d guy no gree come. They were pissed with him, they called him again and he said he's no longer coming that they should stamp it. The guy just told me not to worry and went in to stamp it. Then when he brought back my passport, I told him maybe the other guy must have forgotten to stamp it.

He said dont mind him and he doesn't want to admit it and we are trying to help him here.

Well, na so God win again ooo

Lesson learnt, always check your passport before leaving their sight and if in doubt of anything, ask questions.

Don't be afraid of Houston POE as long as you have done the right thing.

Best wishes everyone.

You can go with a notary public but from feedback from some people some years back on this same forum, some states can be funny when you present a notarised letter from a notary public for instance so I would advise you just jeje do am for US embassy. It free and you can get appointment the very next day and would be done is less than 30 mins so why not just go for it

Hello house, pls I'm new here even though I hv been following this thread for quite sometime. I recently travelled mid may to nj and stay with sil. Well she searched for a neighbourhood clinic for me after I arrived at 31wks saying it will be cheaper than the doctors office. I had no choice since I couldn't find one by myself so I agreed and had to pay $ 190 for first visit. Same day I was asked to pay $ 142 for lab and $150 for ultra scan. I paid all these n I decided in my mind not to go for any visitation again till am ready to give birth! because I'm on a budget. Alas! Just within a week, I started getting mails dropped for me at home and on opening saw $175, $600,$400 from lab and the clinic too. I called the lab but was told I had zero bal with them but I'm pondering why the 2 later bills were sent from them. I'm so pissed right now that I didn't discuss these bills with my sil because she told me from onset that the clinic visit will be cheap and I will eventually be referred to jfk hospital for birthing which we dn't even know what their cost will be on the long run, I had my first child in the UK but I only went in for emergency and that was what I was charged. This her own process of clinic is drilling my pocket cos I told them I'm a self pay and actually thought I should be discounted but no. I'm now praying no more bill comes from this clinic. Now my Question is...Shouldn't I be informed before these tests are run? Should I just wait till I'm am about to give birth and head straight to hospital rather than this clinic that just want to generate money from me because I was told each follow up visit will cost $110 bi- weekly. Anyone with useful information on how to go about this process will be appreciated. I'm stuck with her cos I hv a toddler otherwise I would just have ported to another state.

This ur story is quite painful. That's why I advise people to do background checks before embarking on this journey. I had same issue with my sil but never ever did I accept her ideas. She was upset that I knew everything before hand more than her that has been in the US for 8yrs now. Her husband even complained me to my hubby that I dont ask them any questions or got them involved in my plans and decision making. Anytime I tell them things I got here they argue it so I don't bother talking. When my water broke she was at work I didnt call her until I was close to the hospital before I did. Imagine she told my Dh that if she was home I wouldn't have gone immediately I would have waited till morning before going. By then her husband would have gone to work with their only car and uber from their house to hospital is $60 she doesn't even do uber. The metro bus is the cheapest option from her place to the hospital $3 but will take 3hrs with 3 different buses and one train. She said that in a worse case scenario I will just go to memorial Hermann close to her house to give birth.
First of all I didn't register at Memorial Hermann cos they are very expensive. Imagine how much emergency situation will cost. Funny enough I didn't pay extra for going to the hospital as soon as my water broke.
My Dr said my amniotic fluid was too much so as soon as it raptures I should come over immediately that if I don't the umblical cord will flow and cover my cervix and suffocate the baby or if it doesn't I will have a CS. Which means more money for me. I had to be very sharp with them. Os if evil happens they will say even the US they came to give birth bad thing still happened God forbid.
The husband said when I'm labour I should call 911 shocked but I still made him take me himself to the hospital at the end of the day.
He said he has someone that will do the baby's Nigerian visa and ticket for $700 may while I spent $251 for VOA and baby's ticket.
Thats why this forum is here to guide u cos people their use insurance so they dont understand exchange rate and the money u are paying.

Yes. Before going to the US, be informed and remember you are carrying a human being inside you and that prenatal care exists for a reason. Once you are informed and are certain you have enough money to pay the hospital, doctor and other fees you have researched, determine IF you can make the trip. Going to the US with no prior knowledge of where your going, what you are doing, and what it cost is not the best way to plan your trip. Im not really sure what can be done at this point, unfortunately your decision making process seems to be a lesson as to how not to go to the US to have your baby. Im sorry if Ive been very blunt but I think you need to know the truth so you can comprehend the seriousness of the choices you've made up to this point and sincerely hope you find a solution and tell us about it in case other people decide to go to the US in the same manner you did.

@kamee,

You should go to the hospital asap and ask for the fee for delivery for self pay patients. Sign whatever document you need to sign so you know you are covered and they can't bring any funny bills afterwards. If possible pay upfront.

Inquire as to the doctor that will take your delivery, how much they will bill you, if it's covered in the package, etc. Same for paediatrician, anaesthesia, etc.

Call the clinic and ask them to explain the bills. Since you said you've paid, albeit less than what was quoted in the mail you got, it might be a simple issue of reconciliation from the billings dept. You may not have to pay anything else. They just have to confirm your zero balance. Ensure you get a zero balance letter from them.

Finally, don't leave everything in the hands of your SIL. Most of our people there don't understand how birth tourism works. You are the one who knows what needs to be done and achieved with regards to your bills, especially for the purpose of visa renewal.

Good luck.
Gbam ! You have hit the nail on the head and said it all. Good advice . If i were you Kamee ,I'll follow this advice to the later. Shine your eye o,naija no dey carry last,no let oyinbo do yo abrakadabra o.

My people, how are you guys?

Can anyone advice me on this? - I filled the DS 160 form and something came up which i thought i might not be able to come back to it within a month, so i saved it to my computer. However, all things fine i had to proceed to filling the form so i uploaded from my computer back to the PORTAL.

To my surprise, i got to know that the form Reference code for the first one is different from the one i got after uploading. Now i have 2 different code that works for same form.

Can i choose one out of it and proceed to completing the form?

I hope this wont affect my application?

Good morning Sisters! i am back again. I have been solo as belle no gree come but God has answered me ooo. My hubby don give me belle. This time we saw a strong heartbeat..i believe is viable. My current visa is expiring next month and My hubby is having his convocation in a school in the USA by August. The plan has been ongoing to renew our visa based on the invitation the school sent. Since we plan using drop box for renewal, I want to mention it to USA embassy that i am currently pregnant and i planned also using this Visa for childbirth early next year in addition to this graduation ceremony. I have financial evidence to back it up though no doctors correspondence as i am yet to make any contact and to finalize all that since i am just few weeks gone.

Please advise me on the best way to go about this renewal...I want them to know that i am currently pregnant to avoid any misunderstanding at POE next year.

Please help a Sister!

Use one of them to complete the application and only submit the one that is complete. It is the number u submit that they will open. It's no big deal.

Sorry about the denial.
This interview was actually terrible.
Your responses gave room for your nailing.
These interviews are really short. Every time u open ur mouth, u should give them concise but enough information. You should have told them what makes ur pregnancy high risk instead of leaving it open and begging questions.

Besides that 'better healthcare' line has been overused. Might be annoying. Be creative.

You being a housewife and student didn't help u either.

Re-apply in Lagos. Prepare ur answers better. Let's assume u filled ur forms well. Best of luck.

Just something on my mind- a bit of digression

I noticed some info hoarding as regards a place while we were planning for our journey but i later got through to some nice people who helped out and later asked why information were hoarded and i got a reasonable explanation. I cant blame anyone who decides to do such to protect either self interest or general interest.

This forum I believe was created to help one another and not to exploit anyone. I got assistance from the thread and would assist as many people as possible who require it. Let always think about the lives we touch and not what we get from a situation.

IMO!!!

So that when your ghost members bombard the place and they increase the price before you have the chance to use it, you will feel awesome right? Then agents will get hold of it and and use it to sell market before your due date, right? Be grateful you got the info, run along with it and stop complaining. If you don't know the genesis, ask.

Read back on the thread and see the effect it had on the popular hospitals back then. Abeg shift

Nobody likes to be lied to, including VOs. They know people go to give birth in US for the passport. So your very vague claim of high risk pregnancy does not cut it. These guys are not idiots, infact they are actually very intelligent.

Maybe it is not a lie. But it is a line that has been overused so the vo is tired of hearing it.

The vo saying she is too young for high risk preg made a fallacy of hasty generalization. Many young women have high risk pregs such as placenta previa, pregnancy induced hypertension, gestational diabetes... What it she is carrying triplets or quads?

Like one poster above mentioned, she left the high risk answer open ended. She should have been more specific. I was under 30 when I had a high risk preg nearly took my life if not for God's Mercy that said NO!

Agreed, might be true. But when people just need better medical care in Nigeria, they go to India, Egypt, Dubai etc. and not US and these guys know it. If I was a VO I would hate for people to be lying(putting it lighter, being economical with the truth) to my face all day.

And before we forget she requested for advise.

I advise reapply and this time be more prepared right from the application. On the reasons for the last rejection, say maybe you did not explain your condition well explain better and also still just chip in that baby will have better opportunity in life with the extra passport that will come with it. These guys already know anyway, whether you admit or not and it will be a breath of fresh air to just own up.

On the reasons for the last rejection, say maybe you did not explain your condition well explain better and also still just chip in that baby will have better opportunity in life with the extra passport that will come with it. These guys already know anyway, whether you admit or not and it will be a breath of fresh air to just own up.

You no talk lie.correct

I am not to tackle those who hoarded info, instead I was referring to the bolded in your comment as i read something that looked like it a few pages ago and because its only an assumption, I couldn't react to it directly but i hope the fellow would read. Everyone has a right to the choices they make so I wont blame you for the reason of not sharing. But to be fair, some people are actually genuinely in need of it, would I know who is genuine or not, NO but ma'am raising dollars these days no be BEANS!!!

Abeg shift
