Hey where did you do your undergrad I've told you there's no funding at Tennessee tech buy you still included it. I school at tech and I can give you first hand info about happenings here. If you apply for a PhD, you may get funding here.

Please, I need clarity on an issue... I'll be writing the GRE October, and this question has been on my mind: Should I be thinking of writing TOEFL, too?

Some schools would waive the Toefl for you, some others would not. Where I will be attending mailed me that every applicant should submit toefl scores. However, they used my Verbal score even after I submitted Toefl scores.

Some that do not worry you for toefl would require you to do and pass an English course on resumption - costs a lot more, then you would wish you took the 'simple anad cheap' Toefl.

If cash is available, write Toefl and free your soul from restlessness. smiley

Pls I want the house to help select schools in the US that have high acceptance rate and funding for PhD in materials science and engineering (biomaterials research area) or PhD in Biomedical Engineering. I have Bsc in Physics and two different masters, one in Physics other in materials science and engineering. I will be writing TOEFL and Gre by September.

Boss, how about University of Tennessee Knoxville. I have done a lot of research on the school and in realized it's a top notch school with excellent research faculty and facility(Their CURENT Lab is arguably the best), especially in the area of power systems and power electronics.

You mentioned one time that it is well funded, but my conversation with the grad coordinator has not really been encouraging, especially because I wasn't gunning for PhD.

Do you know folks who got funding for masters? If they did, was it RA or TA?

You don't need schools with high acceptance rates (whatever that means). You have a good profile, extra brownie points if you published in any of your MSc's. It's a good thing you know your desired research area.

Find good MSE programs strong in your research area. Start with strong programs like those in University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign (UIUC) and Purdue University. Ideally, you're looking for FOUR good schools. Mail their graduate program co-ordinators, and professors you'd like to work with, if admitted. Express your interest, discuss your background, and make see why you think your background has prepared you to contribute meaningfully in their labs. I'm sure there are emerging research fields where your expertise in Physics and MSE will be a goldmine, and would surely boost your profile.

If you can get even ONE of those profs to be overly interested in you, you won't need to worry about acceptance rate or funding.

Most profs won't take you serious though, unless you've taken the GRE, and done well. So, if you send mails and all you hear is crickets, don't waver. Plan to do well on your GRE. The higher, the better.

Cheers!

Yeah! UTK is a top school but preference is always given to PhD students in any school. No,I don't know any master's student there.
I think if you have a decent profile, you should apply for a PhD

Thank you for the robust response. My physics MSc thesis paper has been accepted in a peer review journal (Springer) but it is yet to be available online and I am currently putting my second paper together but GRE couple with work (Lecturing at a private university in Nigeria) are hindering its progress.
In addition, how reliable is "www.gregmattoeflnigeria.com" because their registration fee for GRE is 50K which is way cheaper than the official GRE registration fee ($205).

I guess that is it from me for this application season.

I have been accepted to the Molecular and Cell Biology PhD program of The University of Texas at Dallas with a Graduate Tuition Scholarship that covers all tuition and fees. In addition, I will receive a very generous stipend through Graduate Teaching Assistantship.

I only contacted the Graduate coordinator on April 14 and submitted my application on May 1st when the schools were trying to play cello with my future.

I appreciate everyone that has been asking after my application status. It has been arduous, but the difficulty pales in comparison to the sweet taste of success. For those still expecting a decision, don't lose hope. #TeamFall2017 Yes we can.
