OGreene:I am late to the discussion but I just want to contribute my 2 kobo. Yeah 234ng44uk GRE score probably worked against him like @electronic suggested. With a perfect undergraduate GPA of 4/4 in an engineering field a GRE score of 157 in Quant probably raised a red flag with adcomms. 157 Q would be around 60th percentile and might make the adcomms to question the standard of his other degrees, especially coming from African Universities. A score of at least 160 in Quant is desirable for top engineering applicants, while 165 and above would be the ideal score. Generally I believe GRE can have three effects on an application; 1) Hurt an applicant: For example in the situation I mentioned above in which lower than expected score plant seed of doubt in adcomms mind. Remember there are a lot of applicants with stellar profiles so why should they risk their resources and funding. Also, most PhD students serve as Graduate teaching assistants, so a low score screams; We are not really sure he/she would be able to assist our undergraduate students. 2) Doesn't help or hurt an application: In cases when the GRE score is commiserate with the applicant profile e.g 310 with a GPA of 3.2 to 3.6 gives an impression that the applicant is good and should be able to replicate his academic success in their school. 3) Open doors that might otherwise have been closed: In this situation, a stellar GRE score like 325 and above makes the adcomms to give real consideration to the application. They may view such applicant as a rough diamond that can be polished and might even request for additional documents or interview to assuage any lingering doubts about the applicant. N.B: The scenarios I described above apply to middle ranked schools, When it comes to top 20 and the Ivy leagues, If you like submit a score of 335, if you don't have a track record of academic excellence, near perfect GPA, awards, research experience, informative LORs (not the bland ones from most Nigerian Professors) and dose of grace and luck, then you are on your own. It also does not apply to the unranked and B class schools. |

Thanks Time2smile, electronic, joeluv. You understand my position, 157 doesn't cut it for me in any university as it raises questions on previous academic performance irrespective of present situation This was the point I was trying to raise with abnice2004 whose wife had a 4.22/5 GPA but scored 294 in GRE. |

good day Nairaland peeps i was denied my student visa on thursday 22nd of june in lagos by the guy in window 4 around 8 am , the guy was just giving out refusals like someone giving kids candy . i believe i answered all the questions asked by the VO properly but i was refused for reasons best known to him . i got an admission to study master's in game design at full sail university in florida and it's a nationally accredited private university . i wrote TOEFL and i studied computer science for my bachelor's degree , i intend to apply again for an interview at the embassy . my questions are do i stand a chance ? is the school credible enough for a student visa ? please note full sail university is one of the best schools for the course i put in for in the states and it's ranked number 11 and 12 respectively on several educational sites i am 30 years old , single but i have ties to my country through work ( i work with Bet9ja and KC gaming networks ) and i have also traveled out of the country on 4 different occasions , i even went to south Africa this February . do i still stand a chance this time around ? i want people's candid opinion |

When people talk about "grace" one should begin to believe them. I just read this guy's stellar profile (9/10 GPA and perfect GRE quantitative score) yet no admit much less funding. Na wah! "I didn't get any admits from the States for Fall 17. My profile: GRE 170Q 151V 3.5AWA IELTS 8/9 CGPA 9.03/10 (Till 6th sem) 1 6months Industrial Training in Forbes Marshall Pvt Ltd in Quality control department 1 6months International Research Internship at NTU, Singapore 1 Paper presented in ICMAX international conference I applied for Virginia Tech Industrial Engineering Purdue Univ Industrial Engineering UOIUC Mechanical Engineering UMich Mechanical Engineering I got all rejects. I am not sure whether all of them are ambitious Also I applied a day or two before all their deadlines Can someone please tell me what could have been the problem and How I can improve upon it. I am guessing it's my SOP" (Copied from MS in US) |

olarich30:It had to answer .......... Visa is not like betting . Nobody can predict chance its up to you to ensure you pick a credible school and have responses to defend why you choose and how that relates to everything about you.. If any feedback , then you need to post a Transcript of what questions were asked and what were your responses, that the best anyone can do , is give you some feedback |
| Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 11 by TheCode(m): 11:09am On Jun 26, 2017 |
olarich30:Post a full transcript of what transpired between you and the VO. Then bosses in the house will be able to pinpoint where you went wrong and proffer helpful suggestions for your next try. How will anyone give you any advice when no one knows how you replied the VO? It's not for you to say you answered well. As a matter of fact, in majority of cases, only a white slip proves anyone answered well. For all we know, you may have told the VO the reason you chose the school is because you like the painting Do post your transcript and get well-informed replies. All the best. |

234ng44uk:Holistic process. SOP or LOR could have been the cause but then no one can actually say for sure because that's one hell of a profile. |

olarich30:According to The New York Times , Full Sail has many of the same problems as other institutions in the for-profit college industry. [30] They reported that some of the university's academic programs have high loan burdens and low graduation rates. The $81,000 video game art program graduated 38 percent of its students, who carried a median debt load of nearly $59,000 in federal and private loans in 2008 ... they grant visas to schools like these from time to time, so there's no harm trying again |

Stellar/matching grades and research experience yet no admission, a tough one. Applying a day before or on deadline doesn't affect admission. 234ng44uk: |
