It still stands as above $10,000 which they have to declare if they wish to split it since they are traveling together.
Save yourself the declaration and hold the $9k and use your cards if need be.
it's $10,000 per person not per family... this is a known fact that I've verified.

Hi everyone. I am travelling next month on a student visa. Its within the earliest arrival date on my I-20 and just a day after my visa becomes valid but almost a month before my school orientation.

The school is in California but I booked a ticket to Houston because my sponsor lives there and I will be at her place till its close to my orientation date.

Is there a chance that I might have problems at POE since the address of residence I chose was the school but I will first be going to her place?

Her name and address are listed on my DS-160 as my sponsor.
Hi, there is nothing wrong with you travelling a few weeks to resumption as long as its after your earliest date of arrival, however you might be asked two important questions, why you are arriving so early and why you are arriving in Houston and not california, if you're able to explain well that you are meeting your sponsor to make arrangements for school fees payment, insurance and all that before connecting to california you should be fine. goodluck.
p.s it might also help if you have a ticket for the 2nd leg of your journey from houston to california.

Just explain it.

Get both the old and new address and have her number handy in case they want to call.

And be sure to let her know when you land so she can be ready to pick up the phone

Arbitrix:
I will be travelling to Houston next month for a holiday during my annual leave. I just read a post about someone being sent back because the address he filled in his ds-160 was different from what he filled on arrival.

Now my issue is I will be staying with my sister who just bought a house and will be moving this Friday. This means the address I will fill on arrival will be different from what I filled in my ds-160 although it's the same zipcode.

I am a little nervous. What do u guys think?

P.s. it's my first time in the US.

Actually, if they're traveling as a family, they only fill one form, so anything over $10k has to be declared on that one form.
My family and I just returned from an international trip a few days ago and I wanted to fill different forms, they said no. Just one and declare everything there
My advice would be to rather open a domiciliary account, deposit at least half the money there and get a USD-denominated debit card that they can use while here.
This is a plastic-heavy country and it makes their lives a lot easier

seyewest:
No not at all... it's just right.. meanwhile you can hold more than $10k which you can divide between your wife and your self.

Kudos to seyewest and others who have contributed immensely to issues on this thread.

I will be travelling in July From Lagos to Houston International Airport, Texas. I already booked the ticket and made the hotel reservation.
However, I will like to ask how I can book for the bus ticket from the Airport to the local hotel in Houston as I have read on this thread that it could be demanded at the POE.

I was screened at Doha but it's not a big deal. The officer there asked who I am visiting, what the person does, what I do in my country and the address I will be staying.

Exactly what I want Seyewest to understand.

Declaring it is what matters.

Let me quote the CBP officer when I asked him about the $10k and above;

"You can bring much as you wish but you have to declare it"

Hello House at the POE

As a student heading for fall session, Will the cbp ask u to show evidence that you have made your fee payment either in part or full before stamping you in?

Please help out here.

Oh yes! please keep your receipts with you at all times.

Can you explain why you did so? if yes, explain, with confidence, its not a crime. If you read that guys post, you will see that he used an address given to him, by an agent...and most likely it has been used by many applicants.

It's not a problem, just explain why u changed it (if you are asked) a friend did same because he found a cheaper hotel in the same environment and the CBP officer didn't even ask him about it.

Make sure you call the hotel while boarding to confirm that the reservation is still valid.

Hello all. Got to the US today via Doha with Qatar Airways. I travelled with wider and our 4kids.

The trip itself was pretty stressful cause we had an 8 he 55minutes layover in Doha after a 10 hr 15minutes Lagos-Doha connect as against the usual 7hr 30mintes it took before the Qatar crisis.

After a total of like 37hrs (that"s adding the 4hrs spent at mmia) we got to JFK terminal 8 on schedule at 3.15pm local time and the place was pretty scanty.

We used the automated scanner and after a few minutes queue, it was our turn. The CBP Lady just shared jokes with the kids while she proceeded to stamp US all in for 6months, no questions asked, not even "why are you here ?" We thanked her and left. It took like 5minuyes to stamp each of the 6pps and the machine receipts.

Fast forward to agric after we collected our bags, we had declared that we had things like garri, egusi, ogbonna, yam flour, groundnuts etc. We itemized the food items and the cost in USD in the i-94 given to US on the plane and also answered in the affirmative to the question on good in the automated process.

The officers just asked whether we were sure we had no prohibited items and asked us to jave a pleasant stay.

Getting a ride to our accommodation was a bit dicey. The Uber guy showed up then said he couldn't take 6. I had to cancel and got charged $5
Eventually had to pay $55 to Bròoklyn for a ride with one of those "kabukabu" guys who brough a minivan. The yellow vabs eanted us to pay for 2 Cab that would have set me back $75 per Cab.

On the whole JFK was pretty stressless at least the terminal 8 I used today.

Yeah you may need to go for that conference, they have had too many people with your excuse. You could combine the conference and your vacation, no crime.
