Bro, saying Federal Government did nothing in Lagos doesn't mean they didn't do at all.
But using human development index you will realise Awolowo did more for Lagos than Federal Government.
I can't wait for 100% resource control.
Any governor that cannot fit in would be booted out.
There will be no room for justification of failure in South West.
No, he did not. We will agree to disagree cos no way in hell I'm buying that. Mapping out areas around Isolo, Ilupeju and Ikeja for industries to build is hardly greater in scale than what the FG did in Lagos. I'd say not even close. What even initially started all this back-and-forth was the incredible claim that FG only built 3rd Mainland bridge and FESTAC in Lagos in 77 years of occupation. grin

You can't wait for 100% resource control? Let's not kid ourselves: Ondo, Osun, Oyo, and Ekiti would be in massive trouble without allocations from the centre. Those same states often struggle to pay ordinary salary. Even Ogun, while not finished, will be in severe recession.

No work no pay.
All the states you mentioned have the potential to find their way out of any financial crises.
And to even include Ondo state and Ogun state is not right.
The custom in Ogun generates over 13 billion naira monthly if I am not mistaken, just count it as part of our resources.
Ondo state the last time I checked produce more oil than Abia, Omo, Anambra and any state in the east individually. If those states are not worth profiling as states that would suffer, I don't think Ondo is.
Lagos VAT is almost enough to make them okay.
Apart from Ekiti and Osun, which you can be rest assured will both be taken good care of through the proposed regional arrangement, I don't see why any Yoruba state should suffer.
Moreover, we won't agree to any arrangement that doesn't include Yoruba speaking part of Kogi and Kwara.
And I hope you know the potentials of those two states even though they are currently plagued by useless governors.

Resource control will restore economic regionalism where states won't constantly be dependent on the federal government. This is not strange to Nigeria, it has happened before back when Nigeria had regional governments decades ago. It happened at a time where Nigeria's economy was not even dependent on oil, but on agriculture. It's well obvious the grip of the federal government is too much because of the unhealthy bailout of the states. In a politically harmonized society, the power at the state and federal levels have to be balanced. This is simply not the case in Nigeria. If states are left to fend off on their own, they will learn to utilize their resources properly and manage them. This will not only diversify the economy, but will further loosen the grip of the federal government.

Story. I already listed the things FG built. You're highly overstating what Awolowo and the Western region did and highly understating what the FG did.

But go take your exams, sha. Good luck.
Ibadan was the capital of the Western region.

Take a look at Ibadan and see the legacy of Awolowo.
It is a legacy of rot and decay.

If Awolowo couldn't make a good city out of his seat of power being Ibadan , isn't it a bit comical when Yorubas try to appropriate the Lagos infrastructural ground works laid down by first, the British and later the FG, over a period of more than 50years.

Oh, I think you misunderstand me. Of course, I'm in support of resource control. I was just trying to point out there has to be deliberation as to how the effects can be cushioned. Cos the majority of Nigerian states are not economically viable and in the short term, there will be a massive shock to the system trying to wean dependent states off the Federal teat they've been feeding on for decades.

Yinmu. Continue deceiving yourself there. The legacies of Awo at ibadan are still standing today. What are the legacies of zik in the East? That same Ibadan is still far more developed economically and infrastructurally than every single one of your SE cities. #Fact. It continues to feature on the list of African cities with the best future economic prospects on the continent while none of your cities have so far made the cut. Na envy go kill una.

Don't mind the bad-belle hater. He's trying to rewrite history by belittling Awo's legacy in not just Ibadan but Lagos, when all the industrial estates he initiated in Lagos are still standing today, and contributing in no small measure to the economic bottom line of the the state. Odua investment company is still standing as another towering legacy of the sage. He should tell us and show us how zik or any of the SE leaders was able to build the level of infrastructural legacy left behind by Awo. I have attached pix of the ibadan Central Business District that was initiated by the same Awo at Ibadan. He should show us an equivalent of it in the present-day SE. This isn't marina Lagos CBD but IB. This right here is a dumbed down version of the marina CBD (and it was all built without oil money) and is clear evidence that we are more than capable of replicating Lagos infrastructure else where in our region. He should show us any worthy infrastructural feat that his folks and region has attained independently. Oshisko.

It's probably more expensive and harder to ship through those ports. I say probably cos I don't know how the whole thing works.

Well..At least the myth about the ports in those parts being dysfunctional has been busted. No excuses

What's this one saying? What if the British built Lagos seaport? Was it from oil produce or cocoa? Before the exploration of oil, Who was the largest source of NG revenues if not the SW for their Cocoa, Timber, Limestones and Palm.. Abi dis one dey mad ni..

Btw, Ondo has huge oil in abundance. In fact, it has the second largest oil reserves after Canada. You should worry about your landlocked red mud SE first!

Nah haven't seen anything to suggest that it's expensive to use eastern ports. They haven't brought screenshots, links, or law/regulation to prover this either. You notice the asked about my stats. Maybe after I'm done I'll post Tariff regulations and NPA act on first page.

They act like shallow port that isn't intended to be deep seaport is supposed to operate like one. OP- Ask Sarumi and Bamanga Tukur for a start
"In the twilight of General Yakubu Gowon’s administration in the mid-1970s, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) was battling with the problems of ports congestion as a result of massive cement importation.
The government decided to build two new ports to ease the transaction costs associated with shipping and to ensure adequate facilities for Nigeria’s import and export needs.
A feasibility study was carried out and the experts recommended the creation of two new ports; one in Lagos and another in Ibaka, in present day Akwa Ibom State. These projects were contained in the 3rd National Development Plan.
The one in Lagos is the Tin-Can Island Port commissioned by the then Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters, and deputy to then military Head of State, Genera Olusegun Obasanjo, now late Major-General Shehu Yar’Adua on 14th October, 1977.
Ibaka Port was never constructed, purportedly on the advice of the then Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and current Chairman of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) – Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.
I heard Tukur’s argument was that instead of starting a new port from scratch, the same resources could be used to revive existing and nearby Calabar Port.
Government bought his argument and a huge amount I’m still trying to find out was used to revive the port. The new Calabar Port Complex was commissioned on 9th June, 1979.
I heard Alhaji Tukur has a wife from Calabar. Now I’m not sure if his wife influenced his decision or if his support for Calabar port made the community bless him with their daughter. But anyhow, it is clear that the decision is a wrong one because Calabar Port is still moribund.
Fast forward to 2006 when Alhaji Bamanga Tukur’sson, the iconic Chief Adebayo Babatunde Sarumi, was in charge of the Nigerian Ports Authority.
A princely sum of 56 million dollars (about N9 billion) was spent on dredging the Calabar Port channel.
The dredging contract was awarded to two dredging firms: Messrs Jan de Nul and Van Oord. The federal government divided the entire length of the channel in Calabar Port between the two firms.
While Van Oord was paid $26 million to dredge kilometre 0 to 46, Jan de Nul got $30 million to dredge kilometre 46 to 84. According to the scope of the contract, the two firms were to scoop out 25 million cubic metres of sand to achieve an overall draft of 8 metres to allow big vessels call at the port.
Not one big ship has called at the port ever since because while the companies collected their monies and walked away, the channel remains as shallow as ever.
Of course the appreciative Calabar community honoured Chief Sarumi with a chieftaincy title."

Re: Are Eastern Ports Dysfunctional? by Amberon11: 3:06am On Aug 10, 2017
Your dad was very correct.

My sister has worked with two shipping companies. One in PH and she is currently working with a very big shipping company in Lagos. It is rather absurd that this op who seems to be very bereft of any knowledge concerning matters relating to freight forwarding is the one going about calling people daft.

The fact of the matter is that the seaports in most countries DO NOT even have the Onne and Rivers Ports as destinations on their list. Meaning they do not recognize them and do not ship to those destinations. That is clearly why they are mostly used for onward crude oil related shipments. From what she said , they sometimes had no problems shipping from PH but receiving was a huge problem as they would have to come in through Lagos ports. Its the same way we have several so called "international airports" in Nigeria but Turkish or Qatar airways will never land in Port Harcourt. They will only bring you in through Lagos and transit you to PH using other airlines.

Also, the Onne and Rivers Ports are shallow and won't allow for very large vessels. Only Lagos ports can accommodate such huge vessels.

Do not listen to this deluded op, ask anyone into freight forwarding to know more.

Obi1kenobi:
I know absolutely nothing about the maritime sector, but my dad once told me (in one of his anti-government rants grin) that the government pretty much sabotage the import capacity of other ports ensuring most goods are routed through Lagos ports. Then again, he was no authority on the issue either as he was an FIRS official. But think about it. Despite the massive problems in clearing goods at the Lagos ports, it still accounts for the bulk of import traffic. There must be underlying policy and structural problems that are responsible for this.

I would still wait for someone in the know to illuminate this issue.
Re: Are Eastern Ports Dysfunctional? by Amberon11: 3:11am On Aug 10, 2017
Exactly!!!
Ereolamide:
The shortcomings of those Ports include shallow draft, which will make it impossible for large vessels to berth.

It's not just about good roads and all, the eastern port can only berth small ships, and most shippers use big ships to import their merchandise.

In that 8years, did he build any international airport in the SE.? No

In Jonathan's 5years, did he build any international airport in the SE.? Yes

Now to the main questions

Why didn't Obasanjo who was the President at the time Tincan and Ibaka seaports were proposed, ensured that Ibaka was built.?

Why didn't Obasanjo build Ibaka seaport when he became a civilian President despite the issue being brought up by MASSOB then.?

Why didn't Obasanjo upgraded any airport in the SE to an international airport despite the issue being brought up by the Igbos.?

As for the case of Jonathan, Asari Dokubo , Kanu , Biafrans, NigerDeltans and even I condemn him for overlooking Ibaka.

Obi1kenobi:
There's also something I'm not getting here. Some have said Lagos accounts for most of the imports because the transport companies with their large ships prefer Lagos. Considering the massive oil tankers that ply the Eastern ports to export crude, I see no reason why those same import liners can't import through those ports. I believe this must be a routing policy issue. The Eastern ports handling export traffic are probably not equipped to simultaneously handle huge import traffic. So the Lagos ports which handle comparatively little exports are prioritized in national maritime policy to handle the bulk of imports.

God bless you for bringing up this issue

I will tag you on other posts to show you that it was a deliberate policy started by Obasanjo to keep the whole country Dependant on Western ports

[s]In the 16 years of PDP, How many years did Obasanjo rule.? 8years

Why didn't Obasanjo upgraded any airport in the SE to an international airport despite the issue being brought up by the Igbos.?[/s]
Yawn you must be slow if you can keeps asking same question in 100 different ways. The Millitary government was dumb simple. Your reps are useless. Buhari the same guy in Millitary rule over looked Ibaka like Obasanjo. He corrected the mistake now shut up. A fulani man did what your useless sons of soil you elected neglected to do in 16 years.

Ask again please why person x didn't do a policy you thought was good idea. Why did a who your reps and bunch of other Millitary heads neglect Ibaka? Why did Jonathan fail? Why didn't nothern coup plotters bring more economic development to north? Why are your reps useless? We can go on how day and I believe you will. Answer what's stopping you from using Onne Port.

Fallacy. I will advice you get your facts right. Before crude oil exploration the largest source of revenue was oil palm from the SS and there are facts that prove this.
diadem10:
What's this one saying? What if the British built Lagos seaport? Was it from oil produce or cocoa? Before the exploration of oil, Who was the largest source of NG revenues if not the SW for their Cocoa, Timber, Limestones and Palm.. Abi dis one dey mad ni..

Btw, Ondo has huge oil in abundance. In fact, it has the second largest oil reserves after Canada. You should worry about your landlocked red mud SE first!

Blue3k. I am still waiting for you to counter the answer released by Amberon11 concerning why Onne seaport is not import oriented like that of Lagos seaport.

At least, Amberon11 is awake to counter you.

Amberon11 pls create a thread for this so that Blue3k won't keep deceiving people.

The point is daft. So the ports are being patronized ghost abi. The people currently import these goods aren't foreign. You guys say in other threads you control the import market but don't have sway to come to Rivers port or Onne. This is very interesting.

Why wouldn't a country know about these ports. Do they not Internet connections. This is ridiculous to assert that. Are they run by guys like you who know next to nothing.

IgboSubmarine:
1) What type of non crude oil products are imported through Onne port.
Is it only machinery or all types
of goods.
