I'm curious how you all viewed atheists when you were religious. There seems to be a high level of disdain for atheists among some theists on this forum just because they identify as atheists, so I want to know how you personally saw atheists and maybe even atheism when you were a theist.

I was Christian and most of the atheists I met in person were live and let live people, never disturbed me about my faith and were all pretty normal people. However I was active on another online forum that had atheists in the religious section, I largely found them disrespectful of my faith and frustrating to debate with, largely because they interpreted things in the bible and christianity in ways I never considered before. Outside debates they were all nice people to talk to. So based on the atheists friends I met in person and online I was neutral towards atheists, just judged them off their personality.

What about the rest of you?

I can't relate cuz I was the first atheist I knew grin, I became agnostic atheist as a teenager before I even learnt the label exists and it took me some time to realise there were people like me out there, never looked back since

this should be an interesting thread

As a christian I never knew what it meant to be an atheist. How could someone say there was no God? How can anybody say that my sweet Jesus isn't real? Never personally sat down and thought about my religious beliefs and the concept of God at all. I was indoctrinated and I believed 1000000%. I grew up in a very conservative christian home, so everything I heard and was taught were true. Never questioned them, in fact I couldn't question them. I accepted everything and it became my reality.

The first time I met an atheist was like 10 years ago in Germany. It was surreal. I thought I met the "devil". The guy was so confident and kept dismissing God as a man made imaginary idea. I was so scared of him and the words and thoughts that were coming out of his mouth. I wished God will strike him with blindness. I hated him immediately but was more scared of him. I quickly ran away after listening to him for like 15 minutes.

We meet again after some days and he was at it again. Spewing his atheistic stuff. After a while I became friends with some of the Germans and realized that most of them were irreligious/ athiest. Non of them believed in God they way I did. Even those of them that believed in God had very different conception of who and what God is to them. We discuss religion sometimes and I got to realize that most of them were the same. It didnt bother me much since they were everywhere. I just prayed and hoped that God will touch them and show them his "light". I was a bit taken aback when I met black Germans that were athiest and irreligious then, some of my lectures were black Germans and were athiest. Some few friends in school as well. For some reason I felt I could give whites a pass for being athiest and irreligious but blacks? It didn't sit well with me that blacks were also athiest/irreligious because most of them were Africans like me whose parents or grand parents were from Ghana and Cameroun but were born there. I later had to accept them because they were everywhere. Only me and my few Nigerian and other African friends belived in God in the traditional way. I later met and became friends with some American soldiers that also believed in God the way I did(Traditionally). They were stationed in the city I was studying. They had a big military base there. Those Americans soldiers were the only whites that believed in God the way I did. Most of the Germans I knew personally were either athiest/irreligious or adherents of the Grill message. Very few were traditional christians like me. The church I attended then was an African church. After a while I settled in and had to accept things the way they were.

Then came nairaland. The first thing that made me start to think about the existence of God was the constant debates btw the christians and Muslims here. There was no Islamic section then and there were also very few athiest back then . I think there were only like 5 atheist if I could remember correctly(Seun, Kag, Nnfern, Mazaje, Jagunlabi). The debates were only btw christians and Muslims and also btw catholics and anti catholic protestants. The debates were always very hot and intense. I used to read for a while before I later registered .Those debates between the muslims and Christains made me to think about God's existence for the very first time in my life. I Never knew the bible had any flaws until the muslims pointed so many of them out. I refused to accept that they were flaws, I'll rather lie to my self than accept them. The muslims also did the same. When christians point out the flaws in the Koran, they also refused to accept, they'll twist, lie and offer the fringe of all explanations in order to explain it away. It was the same thing the christians were doing. The few athiest that were here kept pointing that out.

Then later the number of athiest picked up a bit and the arguments/debates started. Athiest started creating topics instead of just chipping in when muslims and christians were on each other's necks. The debates continued and I ended up changing my mind and doing away with my childhood indoctrination.

Dalaman, you basically saw the atheists/irreligious/nominal Christians as people who "haven't seen the light" which you were seeing or should I say "thought you were seeing"

nice one and its interesting that most theists presently have the same opinion of atheists, "if only God showed them the light" "if only he experiences Jesus for a moment"

Sure. If only they could see and experince what we are seeing and experiencing. But then muslims say that to christians and christians say that to muslims as well. Every religion says that to another. If only you see the light of our religion you'll leave yours and join ours.

I call it a bubble.

I call it delusion, self-importance and to put it more bluntly, condescending attitude, it makes the adherents feel "special" to "God" (whichever one they serve); God set them apart to have that "experience" which gave them their "salvation" while he left people like the irreligious/atheist/other religion to destruction/ mundane life, so this "special" person now takes it upon his/herself to convince someone "Less special" about his experiences

"My God attended to me directly cuz I'm special but you're not worthy of such experiences so I guess you have no choice but make do with someone else convinced directly"

They don't care about MY personal experiences with a godless universe, or MY personal experiences with superstitious thinking being realized to be just that.
Only "*insert religion/god here* personal experiences" matter.

Sure it's a bubble of delusion. How else will you remain in any religion or believe in the God the religion promotes if it doesn't make you feel special and above the others?

They see you as unclean and lost goats because you don't share their beliefs. It's just a ridiculous bubble of delusion.

I don't know what atheism means when I was still religious, I don't know that someone could have the mind/momentum/capability/mpetus/potentiality to think that God does not exist shocked and I tag others practicing another religion as unfortunate being cus they mostly fall to their doom(a very terrible fate) as we believed

When the wrath of God visits the untalkable happens
I turned atheist not because I wanted, I'm an atheist because that's where the truth lies
I'm not having a double mind about God's existence and I'm sure the possibility of God existing stands 1 out of 100
But all religious God are 100 percent fake

I used to think of atheists as defiant people who for some unclear reason were blinded from seeing the truth.
I also thought they were stubborn, as they never bought my Bible-driven arguments and explanations that I used to think were air-tight and well thought-out.

Unbeknownst to me the first cracks in my faith started probably started around 12 years ago when I allowed myself to deeply question everything in the Bible, no holds barred; my thinking was that this would help my faith grow deeper and know God more. My faith mostly grew stronger for the next seven years, but apparently the faint fault lines in my faith were also growing.

The fault lines started to become more visible five years ago when I started asking questions about if miracles still happened today. And over time I started asking if God still intervened in the world today. And then I started asking if every line of the Bible was true. And then I started questioning the resurrection, and the virgin birth, and ...

I was at an airport one day, two and half years ago, and it suddenly hit me -- I had been fooled all along. Chai! The next six weeks were sad and depressing! I couldn't believe that I had believed in this falsity for so long. It took a good nine months before I could begin to really talk about it. I had to again process what it means to be human. I once again felt like an adolescent learning how the world works.

This was when I started to see the sense in all the arguments and defiant questions that my atheist friends used to ask.

This was when I started to see the sense in all the arguments and defiant questions that my atheist friends used to ask.

It took me like 8 years to finally accept that God is a man made idea and creation and that my religion was just the same like that of the others (nothing different or special about it). I became depressed for reasons I couldn't explain. I felt terrible about myself. I regretted ever going to Europe to study, hated Nairaland . I truly wanted God tp be real but I those questions and the reality kept starring at me in my face.

With the veil off my eyes I saw that the church was just a normal assembly of humans. There is nothing that goes out outside the church that doesn't go on inside the church. NOTHINH AT ALL. All the adultery and fornication that goes on outside the church also go on inside the church, all the fraud, deceit, lies, pretence, violence, marital issuesetc that were going on outside the church were also going on inside the church. I fully realized that nobody holy pass. The pastors were no different ftom me or any other person in reality. We are all humans groping in the dark and trying to find our ways when it comes to the issue of morality and uprightness.

I realized that I was a better human being than most of the people I held or put on a high pedestal because of my religious beliefs.

After a while I settled in accepted atheism and became an unapologetic athiest.

How many times will you people open this useless threads to tell these boring stories ??

Atheism does not question religious beliefs , religious books or religious doctrines or reject religion so I don't get why stories here are centered on religion

Questioning religious beliefs does not make anyone an atheist . Denying the existence of a transcendent creator of the universe does not even make you an atheist.

What makes you an atheist is when you reject deification or when you dont see anything -abstract or concrete - as a god .

99 percent Nigerian "atheists" are very ignorant and expect more stories based on their ignorance here .

Is your religion and God not a man made entity? You were indoctrinated and made to believe in the formulated stories of some dead Jewish hippe who was later dietified and elevated as God by his followers whom later wrote fictitious and mythological stories about him many many decades after he died and you are here yarning in dust.

To the religiotards it may concern;

Atheism

noun (uncountable)

1. (narrowly) Belief that no deities exist (sometimes including rejection of other religious beliefs).

2. (broadly) Rejection of belief that any deities exist (with or without a belief that no deities exist).

3. (very broadly) Absence of belief that any deities exist (including absence of the concept of deities).

4. (loosely) Absence of belief in a particular deity, pantheon, or religious doctrine (notwithstanding belief in other deities)

I think they just say those things just to be comfortable with their position . You can obviously sense that they have very turbulent inner battles that keep them restless , so to find that inner peace they tell themselves even the most ludicrous things .

Anything can be deified - The Pharaohs of Egypt were gods , The Emperors of Japan and China were gods , Mary the mother of Jesus is deified in Collyridianism , Jesus is deified in Christianity , natural elements and bodies like the Sun , the planets , the trees , gods were zormorphically represented , the universe is also deified in some areas in pantheism

Are you saying as an atheist in your ignorance that the Pharaohs , the Chinese and Japanese Emperors , Mary , Jesus , the Sun , Planets , trees , the universe as some regard them as deities do not exist ?

----------

There are non theistic religions Han folk religion , LaVeyan Satanism , Confucianism , Jainism , Buddhism , Unitarian Universalism , Raelism and basically any adherent of those religions are atheists because they do not deify any entity . They have religious doctrines and dogma observed and followed scrupulously in these religions .

I think you have a problem and it's really deep.
Atheism is the rejection of God or gods and the rejection of their existence! It also asserts that there can never be sufficient proof of the existence of any God or gods (all I just typed is simply rejection of deification).

That being said an atheist can believe in anything else as long as it has nothing to do with God or gods.

Rejection of religion does not deny the existence of God because God came first before religion.

If some ideas about God are found in religion and you reject those ideas it's simply you rejecting an idea and not the diety behind the idea (Do you get it?).

If you reject the idea of reality of fatherhood does not mean you reject the idea of reality of your birth or pre-birth because without your birth or pre-birth idea or reality you would not be in the place to reject anything.

You are putting the cart before the horse. You sir know nothing!

Lol na dalaman be that . With his usual mantra grin

Most of the beliefs he religiously adheres to are man made ideas . Examples :

-Materialism
-Naturalism

These are ideas avowed by mostly atheists and they are man made ideas which began with ancient hedonists . He believes the universe is eternal , isn't that a man made idea ? Lol . Maybe the gods revealed that to him . grin

Show any God that exist without human input. Show us any God that exist on its own without humans creating and formulating stories about it, creating theology and culture and making other humans to accept it. Show me any God that did anything or created any belief system without the input of humans.

Even the christian God idea you worship stared like 2000 year ago when humans decided to deitify a Jewish hippe that was killed, they wrote down stories about him decades after he died, created a theology and religion after him and passed it down till it got to you. There is nothing you know about Jesus that you got from any Jesus God. Everything you know about Jesus you know because humans invented the stories, theology , religion and passed it down.

When you show a God doing anything on its own without human input then I'll begin to grant that you have an idea of what you are talking about.

Lol . Maybe the gods revealed that to him . grin

Your God Jesus and his stories, theology and religion was invented by men about 2000 year ago and you are hear yarning dust.
