It baffles me when Nigerians cannot comprehend a simple post. If you check well, the structures that don't work well in Nigeria are those Nigerians created alternatives to themselves but when one looks at it thoroughly it's a case of enriching the ruling class in the midst of this decadence. I ll give 3 instances.
1. Our Educational Institutions: We started with overseas travelling as alternative, then the rise of private universities. The man just said there are 200 private universities waiting to be licensed. It's not like the quality of education in these private university is even world class. Pls don't get me wrong, I am not against private universities. What happens in the end. These private institutions pay tax. Isn't it good business for a government that perhaps care less.
2. Our electricity and power system: we had Generators as alternatives. So the government makes money from import quota's and tax paid by companies that sell generators.
3. Health care: same as educational system.
So, how can a poor man leave his poverty state. Is this really sustainable??

YOU SURE HAVE A POINT HERE.

They are not serious atall...infact I didn't bother reading this shit because only God knows where Nigeria is heading to in so many areas and even if I went to a federal university that doesn't strike, that won't stop me from giving my future children best education anywhere in the world. Some private university teach better, infact train better than public, strike major problem. It's better they stop belittling private universities that are trying. Work hard and pray for Great future.

After reading some comments here and several other comments in different fora, I realised we have a serious problem

1. The only person that speaks for ASUU are national officials, especially the National President. Any other person talking is expressing his personal opinion.

2. There is so much ignorance in this country.
And the most annoying thing is people make conclusive statements without any facts. Imagine somebody here saying the Dr earns nothing less than 400k per month. Well let that fellow know that you can have a PhD and still earn below 150k (which is an improved pay package as a result of several strikes someone called useless). Pay is dependent on rank not academic qualification. Yes academic qualification is a major factor in rank determination, depending on mode of entry into the system and some discipline, a PhD holder can earn less than 150k and a non PhD holder can earn way above 150k.

3. Before you go calling ASUU strikes useless, please note that ALL ETF projects you see on our university campuses are results of ASUU struggles. When was the last time you saw any new project in any university that is not an ETF project? From lecture halls to offices, labs to ICT centres, libraries to sports facilities and school clinics. Imagine if ASUU folded her hands and kept mute, public universities would have long gone extinct and let's see how many people can send their children to private universities...on how much that workers are being paid in this sorry country? Which brings me to the issue of civil servants sending their children to private universities.

4. Besides high ranking civil servants, majority of civil servants earn less than 150k per month. And we are talking about the Federal level. State civil servants earn less. But let's even assume a civil servant earns 300k per month. He has to feed, transport, pay for medical care, fuel his car(s), take care of family members every now and then ( remember we are in africa) fuel his generator and save some to either pay his annual rent, or save towards building his house or payoff loans he took to build his house or buy a car. Which money will he use in sending his children to private universities? Remember if he has just a child in the universities, most likely others are in the secondary school where fees are already sky rocketing. I can confidently say a civil servant who sends his children to private universities must be making money besides his salary, and given the level of corruption in this country, the probability that he is stealing that money is high.
I highly disagree with your 4th point sir, my dad is a civil servant and he earns more than that if you ask me. He deprives himself of so much sending me to a private university. We feed well too to the glory of God. Don't you dare utter such statement again sir. And he doesn't make any money aside his salary, he does proper saving so it doesn't tell much on the familys well being. He doesn't steal. I bet you, if he steals from work I would have been schooling in the UK from my secondary school. Proper planning equals good output. Thank you

Just three questions:

1. How can I send my child to a university whose standard has fallen to the extent that the cut off mark for federal university entrance examinations JAMB 1s 180 or less than 200?

2. What standard obtains when that child graduates from the university?

3. Which employer will consider employing half baked graduates?

some private universities don't even use jamb.. what do you say? @ last bolded, does going to a private university equal sound graduate... dem madonna that's not different from secondary school. Many of you don't even understand what's happening really.

so ASUU wat will u guys b doing by then...

can you just imagine when Public primary school & secondary school teachers go on strike; most people dont feel it cos over 90% of students esp. in southern Nigeria attend private schools.

That may not be good for Nigeria "except they are run by non-profit institutions". Because if you give all the universities to private investors that are seeking their profit margin, you've further moved education away from the majority.
that's the man's point. The majority are not ready to take their destinies in their hands.

Very true.
Only corrupt civil servants send their children to private universities.

Only a person who is not smart would depend solely on his salary in this Nigeria. That people have multiple sources of income doesn't mean they are stealing.
And I've met a lot of folks in private schools who are not even financially buoyant. And there are a lot of rich kids driving nice cars in public schools as well.

You may not see your parents as corrupt of course because they are your parents. Find out how much they are paid in salary as civil servants. Deduct estimated family expenses. Then see how much is left for them to be able to send you to London without them engaging in corrupt activities.
Salaries are very low in Nigeria. Most salary earners in Nigeria have to engage in corrupt activities to survive.

my parents are not corrupt abeg

Many people disagreeing with the man are just taking sides with their guardians and parents.
Anyone doing business or any other work aside farming with civil service is CORRUPT because it's illegal.
From the salaries and loans, sending to private universities or abroad may not be a wise choice.
My uncle is in the health sector and his wife also, the salary is small. The loans have range, your salary determines the loan you get the higher your salary the higher amount you can loan.
Until all TOP civil servants and Politicians have their kids in government schools, then there is no hope.

Lool. Bro what's up.Sorry I've not really been active for some time.

This is the most senseless statement from ASSUU so far.

I also read an article this week where Adame (the education minister) lamented that Covenant University is now ranking better than Federal schools on Webometrics, and I wonder if he is just the minister of education for public institutions only.

We really need to change our mentality in this country because however we view it, private institutions are a plus to the educational sectors and not a minus. And any impact they make as a result of growing to match world standard will be credited to Nigerian educational sector. Hence, government at all levels must rise up and support private higher institutions just like they do for their federal and state counterparts.

Can you imagine a Nigerian lecturer saying something so foolish. He thinks everyone would be like him, spending money on booze and slay queens rather than investing in his children.

If you have parents who are both level 17 teachers of either Lagos or most importantly Ogun state you should be able to conveniently send one of your kids to a private university at a time(of course that is if you spaced your kids birth by a period of 4yrs at least)

I had colleagues back in school whose parents were civil servants also who took loans to send their kids to private universities and then refinanced it with their salaries. What about those whose parents financed their education with gratuity from State or Federal government. This loose tongue of a lecturer just casted aspersions on them all.

This so called ''Dr'' can't tell me he receives nothing less than 400,000 a month, yet he claims his mate sending their kids to a Crawford university of less than 400,000 per annum must be stealing. Oga u better plan your life.

So you think a 'Dr' receives up to 400,000 per month? Even some professor do not receive that much. You must be kidding.
You think lecturers earn that much? Not at all.

My friend, even as at 200 thousand salary (it can't be as low as this!), the tuition of an average private school in Nigeria is 600k "per year"; so try to reconcile that.

I do not understand your post.

God bless u for this comment. These lecturers are inhuman, they consider their personal interest above the interest of the nation. If they want to join politics so that they can pay themselves, then they should go ahead and not continue paralyzing our education.
I know farmers and teachers who squeeze through thick and thin to ensure their children go to schools that will be value added to their wards. Am even sure he has all his children schooling abroad sef.
If it pain him, then let him go and take his children to private school.

Hope you know doing any other business as a civil servant besides farming is against the rules because it will most likely affect your productivity. But that isn't my concern. What I want you to understand is that there are exceptions. Maybe your family is one of the exceptions. We are interested in the majority which unfortunately is as opined by the ASUU chairman.

That I find it difficult to believe does not mean you are lying. My logical mind just thinks the odds are too high for it to be true.

Just to set the record straight regarding salaries of lecturers in Federal Universities. The salary scale is not hidden - it is set by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC). It is available on their website for all to see.

Summary:
A PhD holder without any academic/research experience or publications is usually employed at the rank of Lecturer II . With prior academic/research experience or publications, you can be employed at the rank of Lecturer I . After 3 years on rank Lecturer I and meeting the requirements of your university for promotion, you move to the rank of Senior Lecturer.

Total Emolument, which includes academic allowances and rent: (All figures are before deductions such as tax, pension contribution, etc)
Graduate Assistant (CONUASS 01) - Entry level for graduates with a Bachelor's degree
Minimum salary = 105,281 Naira per month (i.e. 1,263,377 Naira annually)
Maximum salary after 6 years = 120,647 Naira per month (i.e. 1,447,767 Naira annually)

Assistant Lecturer (CONUASS 02) - Entry level for Master's degree holders
Minimum salary = 120,922 Naira per month (i.e. 1,451,071 Naira annually)
Maximum salary after 8 years = 146,241 Naira per month (i.e. 1,754,902 Naira annually)

Lecturer II (CONUASS 03)
Minimum salary = 137,459 Naira per month (i.e. 1,649,509 Naira annually)
Maximum salary after 8 years = 164,970 Naira per month (i.e. 1,979,640 Naira annually)

Lecturer I (CONUASS 04)
Minimum salary = 173,332 Naira per month (i.e. 2,079,995 Naira annually)
Maximum salary after 9 years = 223,667 Naira per month (i.e. 2,684,010 Naira annually)

Senior Lecturer (CONUASS 05)
Minimum salary = 257,625 Naira per month (i.e. 3,091,505 Naira annually)
Maximum salary after 13 years = 371,292 Naira per month (i.e. 4,455,506 Naira annually)

Reader (CONUASS 06)
Minimum salary = 314,018 Naira per month (i.e. 3,768,221 Naira annually)
Maximum salary after 10 years = 417,062 Naira per month (i.e. 5,004,750 Naira annually)

Professor (CONUASS 07)
Minimum salary = 381,695 Naira per month (i.e. 4,580,349 Naira annually)
Maximum salary after 10 years = 501,680 Naira per month (i.e. 6,020,163 Naira annually)

So what it basically means, a lecturer must become a Professor of at least 5 years before one can officially (i.e. what is on your payslip) earn more than 400,000 per month (after tax, pension deductions, etc).
