Jacob's Ladder

Polemonium. A nice hardy plant that doesn't require too much sunlight. Give it water because it likes a moist soil and really hates sunlight (it burns). Its flowers are usually blue, white, yellow but I mostly see the blue variety here. This is Greek Valerian so if your area is prone to stray cats, they will show up, happy, in your compound because of this plant grin. The smell drives cats wild however the plant is safe for dogs and cats.

Alas it didn't oh! We moved homes and the dear head of house left it behind!!!!

Attempted spring onions and tomatoes which were doing fine till my silly mongrel uprooted them all just two days back

Hello domack99 what's up? Saw your pm, could I get a hint of what's up. Thanks

Thanks for the response,

Don't know if you are based in Nigeria but am presently looking for something to use as a fence (Living fence).

Am looking for a Cactus plant, I don't have an idea of how to get it and not sure if they can even survive in South west Nigeria.

See my previous link I created in search of Cactus plant and the other plant (don't know the name)

A cactus may not work because it may still have spaces but cactus do grow in the SW. You may need a climbing shrub.

Thanks, but I can plant them very closely to each other with very little space, do you know how I can get the seed to plant?

Climbing scrub will not work in my case because I don't have a wall

oriaburefarms:

right now we are into trees, we have:
-dogoyaro/ neem tree
-soursop
-mango (few)
-terminalia ivorensis also known as step tree
-delonix regia also known as flamboyant tree
-polyalthia pendula (it's of the same family of the masqurade/fashiola tree, but instead of growing up,it grows branches. i cant find a pic on the internet
- poncirus trifoliata (extremely slow-growth)

DOGOYARO: We choosed it not only for the beauty but also for it's traditional medical uses.

Excluding poncirus trigoliata we have more or less 10,000 seedlings. poncirus on it's self is 8000. we want to use them to graft orange). so 18 000 in total.

right now we are have hard time in arranging the plants in our new plot of land, because we want to plant a huge amount of PAULOWNIA TORMENTOSA (known as the princess tree).if you are curious why we are in love with this plant do some research.

COME VISIT IF U ARE CURIOUS OR CONTACT US: NO.8 BABA AWORI STREET.

Hello everyone! How are we doing? The plants? We've just moved and I have space to plant!!!!! Looking for ideas on low maintenance plants/ trees I could plant! I already intend to have cacti all the various kinds I can find then I also would like palms! Preferably the types that don't produce coconuts! Is it better to start from scratch or buy adolescent plants? Any ideas on costs or where to get good breed?

Thanks everyone!

Gimme a minute please...

Buy adolescent plants. Because it is quite challenging to start new plants. Probably look at your space and pics online to plan what to do. Or take a pic of the empty space, upload it here and ask Oriaburefarms and Co to help plan it and make suggestions.

Seun.... I know this is not the right thread for this but I want to share something with you.

Nairaland is a brand you should improve. There's basically zero reasons to not evolve the venture. 2013 Facebook is not 2017 Facebook.

Please evolve Nairaland....and I'm not talking about the looks.

1. I feel top contributors on NL should be appreciated. Not with money. A couple of branded hand bands, face cap, T-shirt will do more advertisement than you bargained for. Believe me, some of us are more proud of this platform than you can imagine. I'd gladly wear a NL shirt on a flight to Canada. All green shirt with the seductive Naira sign boldly printed on my chest. Trust me.

2. Organize events and invite members. Nothing formal....just an 8pm NL timeout at the Hard Rock cafe biannually wouldn't hurt. We'd all hide our moniker and turn up.

3. Do some more SCR and be visible with it. Grow this NL brand.

Maybe you make much less money than we all think....it's okay. All the above could be planned with much less than you think too kiss kiss

I'm just tired of having the "are you on nairaland" conversation with people. I want to go in with my Green Cap and say ya'll ignorant folk should be on Nairaland!

Okay....I'd stop typing now. sad angry shocked shocked

Locust Bean Tree

Okay, this one shook me because I had seen pics of the flower and I did not correlate it to our common Locust beans we use for seasoning and so much!

Parkia Biglobosa is a tree, Locust Bean Tree to be precise. I believe it grows well up Northern Nigeria so it must like mild temperatures. It takes 5-10 years to start flourishing so this is not a rush job people! Almost every part of this tree is good (from nutritional to medicinal to agricultural). It has real life antibacterial properties, similar to Streptomycin. The Locust Bean Tree's foliage apparently improves soil conditions around it (Peppers grow beautifully underneath it). So love your Locust Bean Tree today.

Hello, please do your research based on where you live and what you want. Compare your conditions to like conditions and order. Or go to Rosety Gardens, Taison or any gardener and start with some plants. Maybe Rosety can help you order the seeds you want. HTHs.

Decor with a Snake Plant

We all have learnt that a Sanserveria (Snake Plant) is good for cleaning up the air and very hard to kill. But how do you incorporate it into your home decor? Here are some ideas. BTW, no need for seeds, just head to your nearest roadside gardener and get a Snake Plant for about N300 plus (depending on the size and where you live).

1. Try a glass planter: get these at Iponri and Balogun. Fill with pebbles or white granite (you can get from guys selling water purifiers) and sharp sand.

2. Get a regular plastic planter from any roadside gardener for about N500 (made in Naija) to N2000 ( imports) and a can or two of ABRO spraypaints. Spray into any design, mine has lasted for over 2 years in all weather. Just sandpaper the surface lightly before spraying and wipe it clean and dry. Use painter tape to mark a design and spray.

3. Get one of the block makers and sellers to make you a cement planter. It can be costly but it looks classy outside your home, on a verandah. You can combine Snake Plant and Purple Hearts in one container for a colour punch. Then add a fern for a transition colour.

4. Spray paint old tins of milk, knock 3 holes in the bottom for drainage.

More ideas. They sell this Grecian Urn planter, it's plastic, add brown, Grey and white house paint to cement and paint over to look like stone. Very nice and easy effect.

Combine snake plant with spider plant.

PS: I have some packs of seeds the lovely Tearoses gave me, will try and see how I can share them.

Living Fences

Domack99, this one's for you.

You can make a fence in your compound out of living plants. I wondered if it were possible here and then I went to visit my sis, who has a front fence of Bougainvillea. Most of her neighborhood does, it's an estate so low Fences, right in the middle of Lagos. They paid gardeners to do it for them.

Suggestions for Fences include Bamboo (you'll have to source for it in Lagos, Ogun and Ondo states), Bougainvillea is pretty colorful. Also any plant that can be used as a hedge. Even talk Masquerade trees in a row will look elegant. If you create a screen (like a window screen), any climbing plant will grow and form a wall.

For a professional touch, Omar Gardens will do a fence for you. They're Lagos-based.

Use your living fence to cover a wall that wasn't screeded or painted right or to add green to any overly concreted house.
