It was well known that the civil war was genocide.
It was revealed on BBC news.

Pig! You should rather direct your hate to the man who started the war, boasting that he would overrun Nigeria within 2 weeks. Ojukwu was that confident, afterall, why would you start a war you know you can't win? But he failed, then ran away to Ivory Coast after leading millions of Pigs and Idiots to the slaughter

Sorry about, thats why you need to Pause, Pray and Heal. Many citizens of Asaba are yet to get over the trauma 50 years after.
That was a generation of the most brilliant young men and boys wasted, as part of the healing process IBB made Asaba the Capital of Delta State.
Thats why we need to talk about it openly to aid the healing process and let the dead rest in peace.

This the most intelligent post from a south easterner ever! All those folks do is to insult. And with insults you get insulted too, sometimes in multiple fold.

To answer your question. You will agree with me that there will be no civil war if there was no 1st coup that killed non-igbos in power and made Aguyi Ironsi (an ibo man) first dictator. Ojukwu was key figure in that coup. And you will agree with me that there will be no counter coup if there have been no 1st coup in the first instance.

By declaring Biafra republic, an attempt to secede from a sovereign nation by force, Ojukwu effectively started the war. Also note that he (Ojukwu) already planned the war before his declaration of Biafra Republic.

No hate speech, no name-calling but the slaves of colonialism went to war with people who want to exercise their natural right to self-determination. It will never be well with Lugard and the British Empire.
The Sun is already setting on the British for their crimes against humanity across the globe, not just in Africa. Gather a group of people who share very little in common, give them a name like they are slave stock and expect freedom lovers of the East to accept it? You people are out of your mind.
Re: Soyinka, Kukah, Nwodo, Duke And Others For 50th Memorial Of Asaba Massacre by rabzy: 12:20pm On Oct 06, 2017
This is a good initiative and very welcome. The Delta state government should have a monument to commemorate these victims but the least we can do is to talk about it. The danger in it is that some people can use it to invoke ethnic rage and stoke tensions which can lead to more death but the facts cannot be hidden.
Other victims too of the Biafran army invasion of Midwest should also be given a voice to speak also, people from abudu and auchi areas of Edo state who are predominantly muslims, people in Benin, Ishan, non-ibo speaking part of delta, people of Rivers , Calabar and other minorities in Biafra.
Everyone needs healing, even the Biafran army commanders that were falsely accused of being saboteurs and beaten or killed by their own soldiers, their names need to be cleared of such reproach.

Raziii:
I did a thead on NBC shutting down a show for talking about the Asaba Massacre and after reading over 4 pages of this post, I wish I didn't make it, because as usual it derailed off the point.

The Biafra civil war was regrettable. Both sides suffered regrettable casualties and let us all pray it doesn't happen again.

If you watched the platform, you'd realise something, the speakers were very convincing. One reason for that was because of their knowledge of the past. Alot of youth know nothing of this past but will argue about it with so much confidence. That's called IGNORANCE!

The killings that happened in Asaba on October 1967 shouldn't be equated with anything else. It shouldn't be used to throw cheap shot at Buhari, or continue your never ending backlash on the Igbos or Muslims. That's insane!

That massacre is barbaric. It was a pre meditated massacre. It was done for the fun of killing and not because they were retaliating or anything.

If you tell me we shouldn't discuss it because the nation is currently tensed, I can see sense in that but to say we shouldn't because its a war and there were casualties on both sides, you need to watch it, politics is eating deep into that thing that makes you HUMAN! This is not Ipob, this is not GEJ vs PMB, this is man's inhumanity to man, and no one, I repeat no one should try justifying that massacre.

Episteme2:
This is chilling. The worst of it all being that there was no media coverage. The Federal authorities tried as much as possible to suppress the news but people fleeing Asaba spread the word, and the killings of large numbers of people of Igbo ethnicity substantiated Biafran claims that the war was one of genocide. Researches have equally shown that the killings in Asaba were unprovoked.
The Asaba killings raise issues that go beyond the tragedy of one community. The war has left a bitter legacy; many today argue that the violence and ethnic hatred endemic in contemporary Nigeria are partly attributable to an institutionalised unwillingness to come to terms with it. And till date, the endemic hatred still breathes even more healthily.
but kanu want rerun of dis sanguinary event.

Talk about this and see how some crazies will come and tell you that you shouldn't talk of the Asaba massacre. They'll say you should forget and move on. Wicked souls!

Well, Nigeria will NEVER succeed until these evils are repented of and apologised for.

All the comments read here except one are all being selfish. This is crime against humanity. There is no way the affected people will not talk about it.

Honestly, I felt for those that died and families affected. Talents killed like animal. This act is inhuman and should be condemned. It might be ur turn tomorrow.
This is just like d killings by Fulani herds men, Boko haram.... This is not about tribe or anything but against humanity.

Let us all read and learn from history. I said before and I will still say it again, it is still military that is ruling us. Forget these leaders and put ur trust in God. One day, God will a man like moses to take us to Canaan land.

May their soul RIP!

I hope I'm discussing with a sound mind,

1st coup was planned by 5 majors led by Nzeogwu and a Yoruba man Ademoyega inclusive.

If it was Igbo coup as touted, how come Aguiyi Ironsi thwarted it in Lagos, and Ojukwu stopped it in East if they r in d know?

Let's even assume, it was Igbo planned coup, the counter coup revenged on Igbo officers right? How did d counter coup turn to progrom by d Hausa Fulani populace against Igbo civilians who were never military partakers in d first coup?

You talked about ojukwu declaration of Biafra to secede from Nigeria, but u jumped the several emissaries he sent to Gowon to stop d continuous killing of Igbo's in d north which fell on deaf ear, the tension led to Aburi peace talk which was celebrated after ojukwu and Gowon reached and SIGNED agreement which would douse d tension and bring peace, but Gowon got back to Lagos and was advised against what he signed. If you were in ojukwu shoe, what wil u do in d face of killing of ur people and d lip service to genuine reconciliation by Gowon?

So in ur truthful mind, declaring freedom for his ppl and asking them to come home to avoid further killing and bloodshed is declaration of war?

Who fired d first shot at Gakem?

What's this one saying? Blame your ancestors for frolicking with the devils (your SE brethren) whom your ancestors smuggled into the Mid west region to kill and attack the Mid western folks while your ancestors, the Asaba Ibos were dancing around untouched. The Etsako brethren were massacred and raped by your biafra brothers and guess who's mother is an Etsako? Murtala's mother! Now, you know the saying "Don't find trouble, or else trouble will find you".

Sadly, the main perpetrators (SE Ibos) fled to their region while severing the bridge thus, leaving behind the accomplice, your ancestors for the army to massacre.

The Asaba folks were dreaming when they smuggled their SE folks into the Mid western region? They were dreaming when their son, Okonkwo was forced on the mid western folks while the previous governor was dehumanised and attacked? They were sleeping when Bini and Etsako women were raped while their men were attacked and looted?

Guyman02:
OBJ was in the Third Marine Commando, he never played a role in the massacre but in the general war. He was also traumatized by it as partly mentioned in his book because his close friend Major Nzeogwu was from there.
It was the hatred for Nzeogwu and seeking for revenge for the perceived 'Igbo coup' that led Murtala to take that action aimed directly at the Igbos. Thats why after the war they banned every discussion of it on the radio or in school books, to hide their atrocities while Murtala had monuments named after him and his picture on our Naira note
Nope! It was the attack on the Midwestern, especially the Estako brethren by the Biafra that spurred Murtala into taking revenge. His mother is an Etsako woman. Asaba folks were culpable in this because they were the ones that smuggled in biafra armies into the midwest. Their son, okonkwo was even forced on the midwestern folks as their governor and much atrocities was committed by the biafra on the Bini and Etsako brethren because they were muslims. Their women were raped as well as their men attacked and killed yet you expected Murtala to watch like a fool while his mother's community was lay sieged?

The Fulanis are known for murder and will continue to do so. My parents told me how my uncle was murdered even after the war was called off by this same murderers and how they inflicted pains, rape and forced marriage on our people. Yes we have forgiven but each time more injustice is committed against us the memory comes back.

And he could be an Edo man whose families and community had been attacked by Biafra rag tag armies who were allowed into the midwestern region by the Asaba Ibo. Their son, Okonkwo was seven forced on the midwestern as the governor while Etsako and Bini folks were attacked and raped!
