Hiya... My cockswinging XY counterparts....

I think you're having a misconception of the word feminism in the first place...
I love Chimamanda Adichie's definition of the word... 'A person who believes in the social, political and economic Equality of the sexes'

I'm just gonna state few facts....

As popular as Chimamanda is for her work...
She was tipping a valet who had brought her car around for her. Her friend, who just happened to be a man, was sitting in the passenger seat, and as she handed the boy the money, he looked at the man and said, “Thank you, sir.”

I along with millions of my fellow NLers have heard of instances of divorce, witch hunting and brutality because of a woman's repeated conception of the female child....

It is a known fact that 60% of northern Nigerians marry at the age of 16 and only about 40% of them continue with their education....

I know for a fact that employers will most likely pick a man over a woman with equal qualification... I love my dad but he does this too... They give reasons like she will concentrate more on her home than her job... But I think that's because she was brought up to think that's what she's suppose to do....

I will use the most popular reason some Nigerian women are fighting for feminism...
A sexually promiscuous boy Vs. A sexually promiscuous girl...
A boy that drinks, smokes, does drugs and others will grow out of it with time... But a girl is an 'omo wobe' that is never marriageable

I think you will find very rare instance of an African woman saying she's going to work and her husband should sit at home... But intelligently stupid (forgive my language) men say that all the time without fear...

Yes.... You say you're not enslaving the for child... But how many times have you castigated Tiwa Savage for her manner of expression and laugh when Burna boy shows the same kind of morality....

When I went to serve, I wanted to get an apartment and my dad was like.... What are people going to say... A single Teenage girl.... Living alone.... Heeyah... His hands are not there oh!

I'm just 20 and I cannot count the number of wedding pictures my mum sends to me in a week....

We are free to do what we want... Ha!
How many actually know that....

I must reiterate that, gender is not as a result of accomplishment in previous life.... You just came out either with a swinging rod or a hole beneath.... So when I hear... A woman is not suppose to take like that.... Or a woman is not suppose to do that.... I just feel.... Adichie rightly said;
The problem with gender is that it prescribes who we should be rather than who we are

I don't know.... You think women are not enslaved...

Ha....
We are not asking for pity and favours... We are asking for us to be treated without gender discrimination.

How many of you will hire a female electrician to wire your house....

If the only reason I'm not allowed to do something is because there are sacs on my chest, that is sexist....

Paranoid? Insecure?

I agree with you on some of this... I think the best way to break them outta that shell they've got wrapped around them is by informing them of who they are and who they can be....

It is by educating the girl child...

It is by stop calling girls Olosho on social media

It is by saying no to underage marriage....

It is by treating everyone without consciousness of the gender....

I mean will you actually hit your best friend the way you want to beat your wife.... She's more than your best friend.... She's your everything.....

Paying for dates.... Lol.... Well.... If your woman is financially buoyant, I don't see why the heck not....

I'm just gonna say.... Whether it is paying the bills.... Or doing your laundry and house chores.... Everybody does something in the relationship... And it is god damned important....

I'm proudly feminist....
Truly African....
60% of Northerners marry before 16huh you must be high on something very toxic

Hi smiley
Please I have 2 questions,
what do you mean by the roles of men and women first of all and then

what do you mean these roles being complementary to each other?

CcRaggedyann

A penny for your thoughts?
What do you think about the point I emboldened, I would like to also get your opinion on the issue if you don't mind.
D darling, I'm sorry about responding late. The cc is merged with my moniker, so I didn't get the mention. I'm seriously growing tired of these rudimentary feminists discussions on NL, you can't educate people who are determined to be dense. Just when you think you're making some headway on one thread, another one brings you back to ground zero. And all the supposed-converts find an excuse to be foolish again. It's exhausting! It's easier to refer everyone to: Dear Ijeawele, Or A Feminists Manifesto In Fifteen Suggestions, by Chimamanda Adichie. It's a fifteen minute read if you're a quick reader, thirty if you're a slow one.

Naturally, I disagree that feminism supports gender specific roles. And if you believe it does, you cannot also claim that feminism is against discrimination against women. Having gender specific roles means that there are some endeavours you should embark on because you're a woman; and some you should not because you're not a man. Isn't that the definition of discrimination?

'Because you are a woman' or 'Because you're not a man' should not be a reason to deny a woman an opportunity (or saddle her with responsibility). Whatever she wants to be (or do) should only be truncated by her own individual limitations (if she finds them, accepts them, and lets them) and not by the possession of a vagina. If she wants to carry a house on her head, let her discover she may not have the muscles to do it. And that would be the reason for giving in.

The problem is that you guys love to talk about sharing the bills. grin
Can you guys truly deal with sharing the bills? Can you guys truly handle a woman who is independent and can handle half the bills in a home without messing with your ego and the need to be seen as head of the house and provider of the home? Can it truly work without causing problems?

Secondly, feminism means equality, equality of the sexes, so if you guys want equality in handling bills that means that there must be equality in cleaning cooking and taking care of the kids, note I didn't say the man will help the woman do the above, I said equality, meaning the wife will be at home while the husband will go to the kitchen to cook and bring the food and serve himself and his wife, she won't do anything. And they rotate the cooking cleaning and taking care of the kids like that, Or another way they both cook, clean and take care of the kids together?

If you can handle these 2 points then there is no big deal in sharing the bills
Sorry for jumping on your mention but sharing of bills and house duties have nothing to do with feminism. It makes the idea of feminism petty i.e. almost like girls are better than boys talk

I believe men have their roles in the home just like their women counterparts. Even the kids have their own roles to play in the home, it is not called family for no reason. It is team work, so everyone participate according to their abilities.

For instance, in team sports like football we have the goal keepers, strikers and defenders. All of which participate to the best of their abilities.

Feminism is about women liberation movement aimed at social injustice not just equality for equality sake. The right for women to vote in the united states comes to my mind as one of the ealier achievement of feminism. Feminism not only succeeded in getting the rights to vote for women but female voters now constitute about 40% of voters in that country.

In Nigeria and Africa in general, equal education opportunity for the "girl child" when compared to male child is one of the main achievements of feminism. Today we have more female university graduates in Africa than we had some decades ago.

In summary, the idea of feminism just like any struggle for social justice was born to reverse the unfair treatment of females by the society. It wasn't born to ensure equality for equality sake.

But, feminism seeks equal right within the marriage too...it extends beyond political, educational and socio-economic opportunities.

It includes every individual and personal opportunities.

I guess gender equality is a better word. Some women that scream sexism would also hesitate to employ a male child minder. How many women would go to their child's daycare and see a man in charge without fretting? grin Each gender is guilty of sexism in more ways than one.

I don't understand why you tried to demise my point as invalid, without addressing them. My apologies in previous post were meant to show some courtsey not that I didn't understand the context of your discussions.

I tried explaining my self with a simple analogy.

Now let help you with a simple definition of a "role" grin

A Role is the function assumed or part played by a person or thing in a particular situation Now you play this part you as person to the best of your abilities. How is contradictory? grin

I used the analogy of a fooball team for family not feminism ( again you show lack of basic abilities to understand) a family is a team, just like a football team.

What I wrote is based on my experience about true feminist. I am not writing nonsense. These are facts that can be easily confirmed. I don't argue often but when I do, I do it with facts grin

I don't totally agree feminism have anything to do with internal structures of a marriage. Marriage is like a personal contract signed between two people. I have seen families where the man cooks because of his amazing abilities in the kitchen, and I have also seen families where the woman takes most of the financial burden because the woman earns more than the man. It is all about understanding.

The very reason why feminism have achieved very little in recent times is because the initial ideas that lead to the formation of the struggle have been abandoned. Everyone now gives his/her own meaning to it.
For instance, promiscuous women now use it as an excuse to cheat, as if sleeping with multiple men is empowering other women.
Some men also use it as excuse to abuse their woman, they claim feminism have ruined women's mentality. So they force their women to remain in the closet.

what if I can't "play the part"? What do I do?

I still don't understand your points, I don't try to insult anyone while making my comments. I made a typo initially which I corrected. Once again you wrote a lot insults without any simple logic

I argue with logic not insults. You said my previous comments were contradictory but I said it wasn't and I gave you a simple definition of "roles" for better explanation.

You are funny if you think throwing personal insults will help your arguments., because It doesn't. It can give you cheap likes but it only shows the intellectual capacity of those liking your comments.

I said everyone in a family have their own roles to play and they will do that to the best of their abilities. I.e. the richer partner will carry the financial burden, the better cook can cook for the family. It has nothing to do with feminism.

'Feminism' includes equal rights within a marriage. What the couple decides on is up to them as long as they're both happy. There are different types of feminism, I guess you agree with the liberal ones.

Women have been cheating since time immemorial, men have been known to put their wives in a box to avoid her independency. They shouldn't blame feminism for their misdoings, feminism didn't tell anyone to cheat or abuse their partner.

SSG, (before you say:who called you? )you didn't edit my name, so I feel justified in responding.

I agree, for every family to work efficiently, roles must be assigned to each member. You cannot do without roles and responsibilities. And every family does this by putting "the best person for the job" at various duty posts. Or at least, that's what would make the most sense.

So if for instance, wifey has a higher paying job than hubby, she'll be the earner in the family. And if hubby is a killer in the kitchen, he should be allowed to face the kitchen and no one should denigrate him for doing "a woman's job". It's the task he's best suited to perform. And so, everyone has their roles tailored to suit the specific family's needs.

What feminists do not accept is that a woman should naturally be the cook (for instance) just because she's a woman rather than because it's a skill she's perfected. And women should not naturally be expected to perfect cooking simply because they're women.

There are no "men jobs" or "women jobs" predetermined. But roles are assigned in individual families based on everyone's ability.

what do you think about a situation where they want to share the responsibilities, they are not assigning roles, they are sharing all the responsibilites equally,
That's the discussion I was having with the first guy.

Lol, the problem is that I'm having a discussion with someone, another person flies from nowhere into my mentioñs talking about something different. Just because he wants to show that he too knows about feminism, desperatly trying to insert himself into a conversation he doesn't understand and he even admits that he doesn't understand what we are talking about, but he can't humble himself, apologize and ask me to explain. Or at the very least fûck out of my mentioñs.
he nows starts shifting goal posts to defend his earlier mistake, Then goes on to insult me to his friend. But at the same time expects me to entertain his foolishness,
Rudeness and foolishness rolled into one.

I need to really observe the kind of mentioñs I get and really filter out the ones that deserves a response and the ones that should be ignored.

This is what the guys question was
laiga01:
When we talk about feminism, I will love us to emphasise on sharing the bills more since we equal.
Note, he said sharing bills, not about roles in the family, not about who is earning more should pay the bills, not about the abilty to pay bills since with this question it is implied that both have the ability to handle the bills in the house.
he said, "sharing" and my response to him was based on that, sharing the bills,

This was my response

It wasn't born to ensure equality for equality sake.

what do you think about a situation where they want to share the responsibilities, they are not assigning roles, they are sharing all the responsibilites equally,
That's the discussion I was having with the first guy.

Lol, the problem is that I'm having a discussion with someone, another person flies from nowhere into my mentioñs talking about something different. Just because he wants to show that he too knows about feminism, desperatly trying to insert himself into a conversation he knows nothing about.
And he even admits that he doesn't understand what we are talking about, but he can't humble himself, apologize and ask me to explain. Or at the very least fûck out of my mentioñs.
he nows starts shifting goal posts to defend his earlier mistake, Then goes on to insult me to his friend. But at the same time expects me to entertain his foolishness,
Rudeness and foolishness rolled into one.

I need to cut down on the way I respond to mentioñs

This is what the guys question was

Note, he said sharing bills, not about roles in the family, not about who is earning more should pay the bills, not about the abilty to pay bills since with this question it is implied that both have the ability to handle the bills in the house.
he said, "sharing" and my response to him was based on that, sharing the bills,

grin grin grin, these guys should stop provoking my baby!

Sure, couples could share responsibilities. It doesn't have to be neatly demarcated areas of limited jurisdiction. Your point is valid. It's whatever works for any particular family. The point is that, people shouldn't be limited to certain roles just because of their gender. Both parties can pay the bills, cook, change diapers....(but in effect, that's still a role you're performing in the home, sha)

A woman can even choose to do the cooking and cleaning and minding the children; it doesn't necessarily make her anti-feminist. As long as she knows she's not relegated to doing these things because she's "the woman of the house". Because of the times we live in, women who choose to do what are today refered to as "traditionally feminine tasks", need to do the extra bit to show their daughters that these aren't congenital (inherited by birth) tasks that they must naturally do.

Sweetheart, don't let these people upset you. I know how hard it can be to stay patient.

Responsibilities cannot be shared equally. One partner will always end up doing more on the home front than the other. It might even end up being the partner who earns more. It should not matter who does what if it is in the interest of the family. I think the whole point of this argument is to discourage the disparity of domestic chores and the person who does them; to demystify payment of bills and the person that pay the bills in familial relationships; to criticize the assignment of gender roles and primarily to promote freedom of choice. A man cannot cook because of many reasons except having a penis and a woman can cook because of many reasons except having a vagina.
