Being a student is hard. All that money just to sleep and eat for 4 months.

Imagine that? Imagine if someone is not financially prepared...... hell

UPDATE!!! ITS ACTUALLY $5900
As i said earlier even low cost states like TX you will not see $5,900 for room and meal one year.

Best to call the school and verify...for New Jersey that i know this can never be cost of accomodation and meal plan for a whole year.........

more like per semester charge .

$5900 per semester my friend. Just for 4 months. After school goes on vacation, you will be kicked out and pay another $5900 to return in fall semester.

This is more like it per semester and not per year and during holidays you still pay or find a place to live . .....
Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 12 by aanu007(m): 4:40pm On Nov 24, 2017
Please anyone knows how many days it will take to ship the i-20?

He's mistaking per semester for per year. One thing with school housing is that those dorms with meal plans are per semester so that there is break in between for fumigation, maintenance and reassignment of rooms.

I lived in one like that in my first few months in NM. Also the cafeteria would be closed during the 1 week midterm break. School dorms suck, living outside is the best except you're schooling somewhere like NYC or NJC or other expensive cities. Well, those NYC schools don't even have dorms, so you can only stay outside school.

Cheap school dorms (around that $5900 or more) are crazy. You will have to find your way during breaks when knocking and fumigation starts. Oh I remember, the expensive dorms like the one for grad PhD students and rich kids without meal plans stays open but the price per semester, you can't imagine.

I will weigh that with how much it costs to live outside of the dorms. Jersey city has the third highest rent in the US. Average rent here is $2700/month. Assume that is shared by 3 people at worst, that is still $900/month. Add $100/month for feeding (i'm trying to be really cheap here), $200/month for gas, electric and internet (again i want to be very cheap) and that brings you to $1200/month. At the end of the day, you pick your poison. If i had a choice, i would never go to school in a place like NYC or Jersey city when there are places like NM, Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas etc.

You can consider living outside jersey city if you can get cheaper rent but that is canceled out by transportation costs so you're back to square one.

I lived off campus all through graduate school, but i was being paid $18,500/year living expenses by the school, which was more than enough to cover the costs.

Exactly. Unless their parents are governors or top government officials in Nigeria.... then they can think of dormless NYC schools.

lol this is part of the reasons i tell people to take their time and PLAN WELL... people think you're just trying to discourage them. Take at least a year to pick a school - based on your course of choice, opportunities for free money, job opportunities, cost of living etc. People just find a school, apply and then think about the salient things later, when it's too late. Even i will never live in Jersey city... those places are good for sightseeing only.

You're asking the wrong question. My course and school is not what is important, your course of choice and school is. It took me 2-3 years of meticulous planning to figure out what i wanted to do, where, how much it would cost, where to find free money etc. You just want someone to spoon feed you in one nairaland post.

So true .....my sister schooling in DC as an undergrad and her monthly bill converted in naira will give anyone a headache . East coast is best avioded except you can carry it.

Dealing with naira, there are much cheaper states to school . ... I agree people should plan well

I wouldn't think an average student studying in DC will also be staying there anyways..even the 'cheap' SE is very unsafe

I don’t see a lot of knowledge sharing from you either. There is this warped mentality that “sharing knowledge” means spoon feeding you so you can simply come here and crib what I did without having to do any thinking of your own. I am here to have a good time until work starts up next week. I have zero obligations to you. Nigerians have a serious and sad aversion to thinking for themselves or outside the box. If you think 2-3 years of planning for YOUR OWN future is hard, then nothing I can do to help you. Me saying anything specific here won’t help, all we’ll see is hundreds of applications to the same school, for the same program with not even 5 mins of thinking as to whether you qualify for the application being sought. Everyone just wants something for free, no thinking involved.

Sharing knowledge to me means giving you the tips that helped me to succeed, like adequate time to plan, thinking about costs of living with respect to your eventual choice of school, places to go for better information etc. anything else is a waste of time.
