‘Stop forcing children to stand up for elders at events. If you want a seat, come early’ – Twitter user

According to this Nigerian Twitter user, @Thxinquisitor, Nigerians should stop forcing children to stand up for elders at events, they should come early if they need a seat.

Who agrees with him?

well to an extent he made a valid point...the word "force" is the keyword here...the child can stand up for the elder to sit and that should be done willingly depending on his or her moral or cultural upbringing....but they should not be forced.......it is something they should do "willingly and gladly"....make them see reasons, don't force it....

He has made valid points, but I'd want his opinion again when he has a child and assumes the role of a responsible parent.

He made no point, absolute rubish, this is africa, this is one of our legacy---- respect and honour.
Chinese are stll sticking to their culture, tradition and values. Britain are still doing the same with queen elizabeth. But america is the standard for gullible africans and most especially nigerians. We always strive to be like them. Eat like them, dress like them and talk like them. No more uniqueness in africa cos these days you can hardly tell the difference between an american kid and an african kid. Whatever you do for the elders will still be done for you if you grow old. They are old and have lost their vibrance, strenght, agility. The least we could do for them is minimize the stress they go through. I'm a yoruba boy and this is top priority in my tribe, i dont know maybe other tribes differs.

Dude may be silly but his point isn't silly. grin

However, common sense teaches that a young person should naturally offer his seat to an elderly person whether late or not just like a gentleman should offer his seat to a standing lady.

Standing for an elder is a sign of respect.
Its part of our African culture.
Why will a child be sitting when a very elderly person will be standing?

Well, he's right to an extent.. People treat kids like they're less important.. I work in the children's department (in church).. A few weeks ago, we had our family weekend and the kids were asked to come in so they can sit together with the adults.. I asked my kids to come early, they all came as early as 7-8am. They were all sitted in church, service started around 8. Around 10,10:30 some so called adults were just entering church.. Then the usher came and said the kids should stand up and go upstairs, they were so sad... I just knew they were not happy.. They came early they shouldn't be cheated.. I told the usher that it would be impossible for the kids To leave their seats for others to seat on..sha the usher looked at me somehow and asked the latecomers to go to the canary.. I don't see that as being disrespectful..

How can aged people be standing and some that their legs cant withstand the pressure will be squatting and bending while kids will be sitting comfortably, haba sweetheart you should have obliged to what the usher said.

The point makes sense.

Most of the times, they expect you to shut up if an elderly person is accusing you even when they are wrong. You have no right to object and they are always right cos they are elders. Shìt is annoying.

I keep telling folks we need to stop forcing children up, they don't listen. It doesn't instill the morals we want it to, rather it makes kid stone-hearted and angry. Want to get a seat, attend the program early. It's unfair a kid who is a child acts more maturedly than adults, kids will be on time 2-3hours early only for one adult to come and say get up. So unfair, adults work on yourselves
