You are boiling your ATF . . if u were able to check the dipstick after it stopped responding to the gas pedal, you
would have seen steam coming out of the dipstick.
Hoping you have not damaged it yet, just do a drain and refill; and you should be fine.

Thanks, I drained the oil and filled it back, the problem remains. What do I do next? Rebuild or buy another one? Can you recmmend a good hand in Lagos that can handle this for me.

[quote author=dan6019 post=51671847]A toyota Prado 2001.

She (my wife) was driving home, and it started giving less acceleration, and the RPMs went up. She kept going as long as it would let her, and it kept giving less acceleration, and higher RPMs if she pressed the gas, until finally it was like the car was in neutral. She turned the car off, turned it back on 5 seconds later, and it worked again for a little bit (she says maybe a minute or two), then did the same thing.

I got home and gave it a shot, and it seems like after ignition, after around 1 minute, it'll give less acceleration / rev the engine more if you hit the gas. After 2 minutes, no acceleration, just revving if you hit the gas.

The shifting seems smooth and fine for that minute it works.

If you now leave the car for about 2 days, it begins to work normally as long as you don't take it through a distance of about 40km @ a stretch.

What do you think could be the problem? ATF or something else? I checked the fluid, it is not reddish but light brown, not smelling either.

Can you recommend a transmission shop in Lag that can handle it for me or I just need to drain the oil and replace the filter?

This is my challenge

Dear all, I parked my Toyota Camry 2007 and traveled for a period of two weeks. When I returned and used the car, I noticed it was not accelerating. It goes on reverse and drives, but dose not accelerate no matter how I throttle. I consulted a mechanic who said it could be bad oil or blocked filter. I changed the oil and cleaned the filter, yet the issue was not resolved. I then decided to do diagnosis after which this code was generated: P0798, pls may someone help me decode this and advice on where and how I can get this sorted out. Thanks!

Automatic gearbox issues have become a reoccuring decimal to any automatic car owner. Slow take off, sluggish acceleration, lack of kick down, loss of drive while in motion, lack of gear change, aggressive gear changes, high engine revs without power in drive just to name a few.

From my observation and the complaints made by some of our customers, these problems usually start from a gearbox oil change that was recommended by the mechanic who then uses the wrong type of ATF oil for the transmission.

Most car manufacturers develop their own ATF formular for their cars.

Honda recommends their own formular ATF-z1 for their gearboxes manufactured between 1998 to 2009 and upgraded to the ATF-Dw1 for gearboxes manufactured from 2010 upwards.

Toyota uses the Type 4 ATF for their cars manufactured between1996 to 2007 and the Toyota WS ATF for ones manufactured between 2007 to present.

Most other car manufactures have also upgraded the type of ATF for their modern cars.

Using the wrong grade of ATF would almost certainly result in a failing transmission. Low grade ATF may not be able to handle the high temperature operations operations of a gearbox. Under very high temperatures, low grade oil loses its fluidity and may begin to boil causing loss of hydraulic functions by frothing or foaming.

Some remedies I have seen used by local mechanics is to further add engine oil to the gearbox in order to thicken the viscosity of the ATF. This in turn puts the pump under great stress as the thicker oil would require more effort from the pump in distributing the oil under high pressure as well as the oil filter which is usually embedded within the transmission gear train. (The removal and changing of all Honda transmission oil filter would require the removal of the gear box from the car and stripping down the gearbox)

The resulting consequence would be an imminent and extreme overheating of the transmission and components such as the friction plates and a rapid degradation of the wet clutch fibres hence the loss of drive, slipping clutch and rough gear changes.

Replacing the gearbox or a total overhaul by an expert would be the likely solution but before then, an inexperienced mechanic would Send you on a wild goose chase by suggesting the removal and servicing or outright replacement of shift solenoids on the outer casing of the gearbox. These solutions Don't last as its just a temporal remedy to a terminal issue.

We constantly repair these gearboxes and those of other makes to a very high standard with 99.9% success rate and we recommend that if you are having serious issues with your automatic gearbox, ensure that the appropriate procedures are followed.

Car-Doctor.

Good evening Car Doctor. I'm glad to have come across this topic. I drive a 2011 accord with all the symptoms mentioned. Will this defect affect fuel efficiency? My fuel consumption is presently about 15mpg which is very poor compared to 27mpg as the average. Got a P0420 as the only code on an OBD I scanner.

I have however ensured to replace the transmission fluid with DW 1. (Got it from Luvving hubby).

Would you recommend changing the brain box as a good attempt to solve this issues? I intend to drain gear oil again to ascertain that the bad fluid is reduced to a least possible. Could this also help in reviving the transmission?

kindly advice further.

Hello car Doc. Hope you are doing well? I just bought a Honda city 2007, I was driving to minna from makurdi and observed the gear wasn't selecting properly. The indicator on dash board for drive D began fluctuating. What could the problem be? Please advise so I know if I should return the car and get back my money or it's a minor issue. Thanks

Good day car-doctor

I just got a Nissan quest 2005 SE tokunbo. It was quite okay when test driven. However, my mechanic said we need to drain and refill the engine oil and gear oil, which we did. He changed the gear oil with oando dextron 3

Now the problem, the car will not pick up immediately at drive but after some 30 seconds except I shift to L. The reverse is instant pick up for now. I ran a scan and it gave

P0705: transmission range sensor malfuction (PRNDL input)
P0765: shift solenoid D malfuction.

What can i do now? What's the effect of this codes and how can it be rectify?

Hello Car doctor, I drive a 2007 Mdx and noticed recently it shudders/shakes when shifting gears from 2-3. Apart from a shaft change and I lost gear oil, which resulted a top up of 1ltr (not exactly Honda ATF but US made). And a problem with my ABS/Speed sensors which I changed sensor. No serious mechanic work has been done afterwards.
What could be the problem?

My mechanic said it is the cause of my engine overheating...
Thanks

Hi Car Doc, pls I drive Honda Odyssey 2000. last year the gear developed problems and so I replaced the gear box completely. Now the new one is not changing to gear 2.......if it change to gear 2 it uses force and often time it doesn't enter gear 2. I have leaked out the seahorse in it and replace with Oando oil yet problem persist ........I Am suspecting the solenoid. Because it has displayed this symptom just after installing the gear box and the gear specialist replaced the solenoid and it started working great. the problem started just after the next day I traveled with the car to Imeko, Ogun state ( 8hrs journey)

what your advise can you help me get a good solenoid?

I shouldve seen this thread before changing my gear oil.

I found out my gear oil was leaking so I went to my mechanic who replaced the seal and filled it up with another oil.

The gear when put on D drive won't move but will move when on R reverse.

Now I've just towed the vehicle Sienna 2005 model to my house.

Any help here please?

Kashif, Gazzuzz, Makavele and other car gurus please I need your help.

Mennn! you have created problems for that gear. please let us ensure we always use the recommended ATF. Honda gears are very sensitive to the ATF used. Majority of gear problems are caused by the use of wrong ATFs. I suggest you scan the car for codes to ensure the problem is gear related. if it is gear related, then I think you should drain the oil and replace with the recommended Honda ATF DW1. Well a gear mechanic looked at it and told me to go buy a new gear box cry. It's a 13 pin gear and I'm told it's quite expensive.

I'll go to Ladipo when I'm back cos I'm not in town now.

They put a 10pin and choped ur money. A scan will prove it angry

Note from the bottom the wires can me manipulated and it will look like a 13pin.

Meanwhile on a clear road count your gears, if you can count 1-2-3-4-5 then it's 13pin if it stops at 1-2-3-4 then it's 10pin and the jerking will not clear.

Meanwhile you spent over 300k on installing 13pin gear why you no locate my shop? I for give you over 50k discount on the original gear plus labour and oil costs grin

Guys I'm having an issue with my gearbox.

It's a 2008 mitsubishi outlander.

Recently I got an indicator on the dash saying check transmission, then the check engine light came on. Scanned it and I get p0729 gear 6 incorrect ratio.
Car drives normally for long distances except when the check transmission light comes on, then I get slight hesitation and it continues moving with no issues.

If I switch off the car and put it back on, the check transmission light goes until much later.

It's becoming an irritation. What's the way out please

A diagnosis based on your descriptions cannot be conclusive. You need to be able to seperate engine performance from that of the gearbox to ascertain which of the two being responsible for what you just described. Apart from a faulty transmission, your engine could display these symptoms. If you are in abuja, pls kindly bring the car in for proper examination.
