AMASA Firdaus, a Muslim faithful who graduated from Nigerian Law School (NLS) and was refused her call to bar for failing to remove her hijab, has said her defiance was to challenge the status quo.

Firdaus, made her stance known in a chat with Premium Times.

She described the actions of the Nigerian law school as "a violation of her rights".

She is a graduate of University of Ilorin (UNILORIN).

She has since been cautioned by the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria not to speak on the controversial issue again.

She also said having studied law for years there was no where the law prevented female Muslim lawyers from wearing hijabs.

Asked what motivated her to take the decision, she explained that she wanted to change the narrative and give Muslim sisters the rights to express their constitutional rights as enshrined in the constitution.

“My major concern is the approval of Hijab so that every person coming behind me will be able to use it for the call to bar (ceremony).

“My demand is that Hijab should be approved.”

“They just call it convention that the British gave to us and we have to stick to it. I used them. They complained (during) my first (law) dinner. That is how they do on the campus. You don’t wear hijab for dinner but I did. I chose Abuja because I knew they were a little lenient," she reportedly said.

Asked why she did not wait to be called to bar before embarking on the campaign, she said those who removed their hijabs in the past did nothing to change the situation.

“People have been removing their hijab over the years. What have those people who have removed it done?”

She thanked the Muslim community saying their support for her demand has been impressive.

Already, the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria has said it would write the presidency over Firdaus’ inability to attend the call to bar ceremony.

The national leader of the MSSN, Jameel Muhammad, described the restriction on the use of hijab as “Islamophobia.”

He said if the issue was not resolved by the presidency and national assembly, the society would resort to legal action.

“Then we might have to approach the court of the law. Already our lawyers have taken her brief,” he said.

However, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, AB Mahmoud, said the controversy surrounding Firdaus’ use of hijab was needless.

Mahmoud posted a picture of his daughter in hijab on the day she was called to the New York bar.

He said the issue would be addressed.

The incident, took place at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, on Friday.

The case has attracted significant attention on social media, with Nigerians divided on her decision and that of the authorities of the law school.

While some are in support of her decision in respect of constitutional right to freedom of religion, others condemn her action, insisting that law school is no respecter of religion, therefore laws should be obeyed.

Nonsense!
If the acceptance of 'face mask' in NewYork justifies her action I hope people like her will understand the stance of people like bob-risky.
By the way, what or who is she hiding her face from? Will the husband killer wife in Abuja also cover her face and claim another vieled person did the crime?

I won't be surprised if she was put up to do this by some Muslim clerics just to arm twist the masses to forcefully do their bidding. They use human right as a front but once they get a grip of what they need they take Human Rights away and force their religion down the throats of the people. As the Holy Bible says 'they keep the outside of the cup clean but the inside remains filthy' juxtapose that to someone who wears hijab but boldly insults those advising her to take it off.

She shouldn't have bothered going to a secular school talk less going to d law school.
The Holy Bible recognises d law governing a land nd it urges believers to adhere to those rules, if its truly a religion of peace den dose Islamic organizations should condemn her act and set the records straight.

Your professional law body don't agree with your dressing. Make your family proud, remove it next year and be called to bar. Am sure you were taught as a Muslim to obey governing bodies, please do. To the best of my understanding, wearing hijab in your religion is not compulsory, why make a big deal out of it for christ sake. She wore the hijab neatly but they said no, then follow the rules. We all make mistakes, if she had known she would be rejected, there is a greater chance that she wouldn't wear it that day.
I won't be surprised if the law is bent to accommodate her cause of the northerners in high places and their Muslim influential friends in the west. They should kuku name the country 'the islamic state of Nigerian brotherhood'
But serously, an individual doesn't want to bend her personal rules, but want a professional body established before she was born to bend theirs. Something has gone seriously wrong somewhere. Inferiority complex is the word, 'they refused my dressing cos am a muslim. They hate me cos am a muslim' but it's not true, they won't take it from anyone no matter the background

This is a much bigger issue than what this girl is looking at. Every institution has its code and conduct. The Nigerian Law School has its dress code, so does NYSC. The NYSC dress code of wearing trousers is against a lot of Christians faithful, but they have to wear to fulfil the clarion call. A lot of religious bigot want to bring in controversy in everything. Law is a respectable profession that should not be dragged into the mud by religious bigots.

There's something this girl and her supporters don't seem to understand, freedom of religion and religious expression also have the corollary of freedom from religion and religious expression. Nigeria is a constitutional secular state, and the judiciary being the guardian of that constitutionalism, should not only be neutral, but be seen as neutral at all times. That Lady Justice,is not only blind to status, circumstance of birth and whatnot, but is also very blind to religion or the lack of it.
Also note, constitutional provisions on rights are not absolute.Same Constitution approves of situations or circumstances where national or institutional laws, rules and regulations may regulate the application of those rights,as is this case,or even abridge/breach them temporarily for the good of the larger society.
If special provisions is now made for hijab,as Muslims and AB Mahmoud, are pushing, then consequential provisions would be made for the traditional religion practitioners, nuns, priests and monks too.
The end result would be the chaos which the current rules already prevent.

From a nairalander:
cooljoe:
Chinwo v. Owohnda (2008) 3 N.W.L.R (pt 1078) 341, 361. Court held inter alia that when u choose to be a member of an association, their rules shall/can curtail ur rights as contained in s.39 nd 40 in d constitution. Look out 4 d pronouncement of per Dongban-Mensem JCA

In all sincerity and objectivity, the matter the lady has brought to play is wrong and the best word to describe such a lady is rabble-rouser. Nigeria is a very secular country with a near balance population of Christians and Muslims. The animist/atheist population is quite insignificant. Someone who is called to bar must be blind to all sentiments in the delivery of justice. For her supporters, i want them to expect a nuclear effect, the glamour of the ceremony would be gone in no distant time if they proceed with this. People would point to their freedom of expression and mess up the whole process. Let us wait and see.

There is a difference between a professional dress code and religious right. When a lawyer goes to court, under the British system, he/she must dress like a lawyer not masquerade.

When one exemption is made before the law, it'll lead to others asking to be exempted . At the end, what we'll have is anarchy .

Next thing now is for her to go get a bank loan and when It's time to pay, she should tell them that as a Muslim she's exempted from paying the interest .

These terrorists will not Rest until they born down this country.... I knew she must have been planning this confrontation with her superiors prior to this...
Many Good Muslims before her have followed laid down rules and regulations of the profession without any qualms
Thank God she didn't wear any explosives

But baffles me is the bold support the terrorists are getting from their kind on this forum and beyond
They don't know that state law supersedes all religious law... They don't know that Nigeria is a secular state
They don't know that Nigeria is not under Sharia

Nigeria has no business being one nation
It's not working
We are only covering Up a seven months pregnancy
Once we divide this country... Stories like this will immediately become a thing of the past
While other nations are talking about Mars
We are here debating about hijab
