English Language as a career path is not a bad choice at all especially for those with dream of becoming teachers.

Where the challenge lies is when one decides to rely on the many quack higher institutions of learning here in the country for the degree. Having visited many campuses in the country, I discovered that many of the lecturers do not flow well in the language, and would rather depend heavily in the native language when delivering lectures.

I will advise any serious minded student who will want to carve a niche for himself/herself in the English career path to look to the way of ANAMBRA STATE UNIVERSITY (now Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University) for it.

On a personal note, I have taught in schools, worked as a content developer for a blog, interpreted (albeit for free). Chaiii....open your own school, going places won't make you rich, put head down and grab reasonable skills to make money , our modern world don't need much grammarians. After communication, what next do you have to offer? Internet, especially YouTube is now making it easier for any concerned person to learn English language (reading and writing) I did experiment using YouTube on a 31year primary school drop out (guy), I introduced YouTube English class to him and as I write presently, the guy is a guru cos he dedicated his time to learn it at his own pace....My good advice to English language degree holders and prospective ones, try to acquire a backup handy skills, ICT certification isn't bad for you.

A degree in English Language on it's own is very limiting if you are interested in making money. I studied English but had to go further to do a PGD, MBA and later venture into HSE after taking some local and foreign training and certifications.

Employers are likely to open doors to someone from the sciences than you an English graduate. Unless you have additional skills.

You can get a job on the merit of a Degree in English Language but those opportunities don't pay much.

To me to study English in Nigeria I would rather study French, reason because apart from all the benefits of studying English that can also be applied to French a French graduate can easily be a translator or a diplomat in Nigeria.

Yes there are English graduates being bankers, managers admin officer etc, but that is an anomaly, probably there due to some influence. The real place of English language graduate is the classroom, and if he add some value to his certificate, he can be a journalist or PR practitioner.

Hmm.. Where do we start from.. Okay. I am also an English-Lang graduate, though a recent one from OAU.If you are creative though, you could seriously make it as a writer,Journalist, presenter, OAP and, blogger (in the case of a blogger, you should be familiar with a wide range of issues and not be limited to a particular niche)or you could diversify into other totally different terrains away from your course of study. To me, It is definitely hopeless to further in the course except you are gunning for a PhD .

Well,for those with the mindset of English studies as a road map to primary and secondary school teaching, it gladdens me to inform you that it's all heresay. If indeed you studied or currently studying the course, then you would have realized by now that it's a whole new world and different experience especially when you get to your Part 3.There,you start undergoing gruesome training in fields such as Sociolinguistics, Pyscholinguistics,Multilingualism, Discourse Analysis, Pragmatics, History of the English language etc. At that point in time, you would question the stereotype attached to the course concerning teaching .

Conversely, you are trained to be a universal being, with range of other Faculty courses such as Philosophy, Dramatic/theater Arts, History, foreign languages and lots more. You are expected to be unique, creative and different from your peers from other spheres of Discipline. While others think ofmagnanimousn ambiguous and intimidating CV, you should learn to create an ambiguous and intimidating YOU. No company or Organization wants to see your CV as an English graduate because they don't need it. What they want is what you can offer them .You could start your little company on anything be it publishing, entertainment,media and communications,etc.

Furthermore, alot of graduates often complain about not getting that preferred colar job while their friends are getting them in double. They have failed to realise that they have been destined not to have an office because the World itself is your office. You were trained not to become an engineer, medical Doctor, Lawyer but a creative thinker, a forged Skeptic and rationalist and ,a universal analyst equipped with the linguistic skills to unravel and conjure.In other words you need to be creative. Search deeper within yourself and start to think.

Finally friend, what you have in hand right now, is worth more that a handful of diamonds. The course you despise now is the knowledge alot of people are yearning for. Don't you realise right now that a lot of the so-called "Creative writters" in the industry now, are mainly Lawyers and experts from other fields of life.They have discovered too late the essence of creative writing and they try foolishly to quicky do a surface learning of what took you years and numerous semesters to learn. They all want to be like you and envy you because they realize that they would never get the type of your knowledge when it comes to matters relating to creativity within the arts and humanities.

Some of you console yourselves, after raking in a pass or a third class degree, with the idea that you read Engineering or other Science courses. That is just sad and hints at a fundamentally flawed sense of self esteem.

There is a reason why people study the Humanities and Social Sciences. Everyone is not cut out for science. Everyone is not a robot that crams useless equations, formulae, chemical signs, etc, that they cannot translate into real life technological innovations. As an Engineer, which I believe you are, what have you done to better the technological field in Nigeria? Have you designed anything useful? How wealthy are you? Are you wealthier or more renowned than Wole Soyinka? Is there even any Engineer that is more renowned than Chinua Achebe (who, if I may add, left Medicine and Surgery to study English)? How many Nigerian National Order of Merit awards have Engineers gotten in Nigeria?

Stop feeding your ego with bunkum. Courses in the Humanities are not easy. Many of you criticising English here cannot survive a day of Shakespeare and a bout of Chomskyan Syntax. Can you apply theory to a text? Can you survive a wave of Soyinka and Okigbo? Can you even comprehend the bulk of history those in the Humanities encounter? English is highly relevant in modern Nigeria. Our official language is English and there are more than a thousand opportunities for those who read and have a deep passion for the course.

Without appearing too immodest, I make more money than many scientists and engineers, and I daresay, even you. What I practise has everything to do with what I read and I am into a wide range of critical sectors. The figure I make every day on Fiverr as an English graduate is enough to open an Engineering firm and employ Engineers if I wanted to.

And yes, English graduates and others from the Humanities can work in Shell or Chevron as PR officers, administrative officers, official writers, and in many other capacities. Infact, they can work virtually ANYWHERE and they have a place in EVERY firm you can think of. Or is it as Diplomats? Publishers? Librarians? Copyeditors? Content Writers? Social Media Influencers? Creative Writers? Name it!

Don't ever in your entire life refer to graduates of English or of any other course in the Humanities and Social Sciences as mentally lazy. My exposure to English syntax made programming and coding very easy to catch up on. Most times, I edit the English content in an already written code while I also edit and debug the code itself. You should know what what means in terms of pay.

So stop putting down your discipline if you truly studied English and have a passion for it because I know 60% of English graduates read English because they felt they had no other choice. Many don't even like the course enough to make a living out of it. Unfortunately, we have many dispassionate holders of a pass, third class or a 2.2 grade degree in English. I hope you are not one.

I don’t think he has belittled English as a course of study. If anything, you both are saying the same thing. A degree in English may not take you that far compared to other ‘lucrative’ disciplines.

Essentially, you both have added other skills and certifications to your first degree which is English. Put simply, it paved the way for you.

And I think it’s noteworthy for anybody in the discipline. Expand your knowledge beyond your first degree.

I started taking professional courses in my finals. Began my PGD too. By the end of NYSC, I was well positioned for jobs! Told my colleagues back then to do same, they all laughed, told me I was wasting my time. Lots of them are primary school teachers and even job seekers today. I have the luxury of selecting jobs cos I opened myself up for it.

When I hear people deride English, I just smile. I don’t have the strength to debate. Go enlighten yourself!

Be prepared to have a lot of what you thought was correct English "corrected" ,be prepared to have almost everyone you know ask you to correct every single statement they make. Be prepared to read a whole lot,especially outside your class texts,its very helpful,i found it useful,practice what you're taught always,dont be shy to stop speaking pidgin,it helps too,and quit writing in short hand. English is very interesting and you'd find it both useful and practical after graduation.
