Quoted from another forum by Abraham Gubler

"Exercise Magersfontein in 1988 was a preamble for a amphibious landing at the port of Namibe.
This was to be called Operation Kwevoel (Go Away Bird) for the SAN and 44 Para Bde to cut Cuban lines of communication by seizing the port of Namibe. SAS Tafleberg and five strike craft (for force protection and NGS) would land the SA Marines' Amphib Coy by D-80 (Delta) landing craft to seize a beachhead. No doubt with 4 Recce securing the beach beforehand. Then two companies of paras would come ashore from the Tafleberg via the Deltas and Puma helos. The SAAF with 10 C-130s and C-160s would then para drop another two companies of paras, engineers, the Ferret anti tank unit, 14.5mm HMGs for air defence and a 120mm mortar equipped light battery. Once the port was seized the engineers would destroy the facilities by demolition. However the truce was signed on August 8, 1988 and Operation Kwevoel was not needed."

Meanwhile, Dan Ali told state house correspondents that top on the agenda of the three hours meeting with Buhari was the stringent conditions imposed by the United States government for the sale of 12 Super Tucano A29 planes and other weapons to Nigeria at the rate of $495 million.

He said US has insisted that payment must be made by February 20, 2018, and that the aircraft can only be available in 2020.

Dan Ali also said that the US government had asked Nigeria not to send its personnel to understudy the production process of the aircraft as Nigeria did done in the case of other countries.

“The contract include cost which is $494 million to acquire the Super Tucano A29 plans as well as training, where the facilities will be accommodated and continuous servicing among others,” he said.

“Some of the stringent measures include that we will start having them from 2020, which is two years from now. They are also thinking of not allowing our technicians to be part of the production inspection. But this is what we normally do in all the defence contracts, we send our personnel to go and understudy especially when it comes to specialized aircrafts like in Russia, our personnel are permanently based in where the production is being done for this MI35 helicopters.”

The minister said the council has approved that the officials of his ministry meet with the US ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington, to iron out the contending issues.

Firing on all cylinders!!! cheesy

Rippel Effect filling major grenade launcher export orders

Large export orders meant Pretoria-based Rippel Effect could not enjoy a festive season shutdown at the end of last year. Instead it was all hands at work to ensure the first batch of more than 1 300 handheld 40mm XRGL extended range grenade launchers went to buyers in the first month of 2018.

The XRGL40 extended range grenade launcher is now operational with armed forces of 14 countries around the world from South East Asia and Latin America through the Middle East to Europe, including two NATO countries.

The latest shipment also includes a first consignment to another new client in Western Europe.

Rippel Effect pioneered the extended range 40mm multi-shot system when it introduced the concept to the world at the Small Arms and Cannons Symposium at Shrivenham in the United Kingdom a decade ago. It proved the XRGL40 extended range system could effectively be used at distances up to 800 meters.

"The significant export orders received in recent times – and now executing, show the XRGL40 is the hand-held 40mm multi-shot extended range grenade launcher of choice for infantry and other forces around the world," he said adding “Several of the current 14 clients have placed multiple return orders since their first acquisition of the XRGL40”.

It is now obvious that the A29 deal will be the worst deal Nigerian Airforce will ever engage in. We will have to wait till 2020 before we start taking delivery. WTH!!! Do they expect us to be fighting terrorists forever?
They also don't want Nigerians to carry out maintenance on the aircraft by ourselves. How demeaning? They are acting all condescending on us. I say let's cancel this stupid deal!

International contract for Rheinmetall Denel Munition

Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) will supply a complete suite of advanced 155mm Assegai projectiles to Australia’s largest privately owned defence company NIOA, under the LAND 17-1C2 Future Artillery Ammunition program for the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

RDM’s portion of the initial contract for the qualification ammunition and war stock is approximately 60 million Australian dollars.

After successful qualification of the ammunition with the in service 155mm weapon system in Australia, RDM will receive orders on an annual basis for training ammunition.

RDM will supply the complete family of ballistically matched Assegai projectiles with extended range, improved accuracy and increased effect, replacing the ADF’s older generation ammunition. The latest technology includes the full suite of ammunition including High Explosive, V-LAP High Explosive Extended Range, visual and infrared illumination and smoke and practice rounds as well as modular charges for training.

The advanced, integrated family of 155mm ammunition is currently in service with NATO countries and is immediately available to the Australian Defence Force.

A 70 km-range version of the Assegai 155 mm artillery projectile, fully compatible with NATO-standard extended-range ordnance systems, is designed to mitigate the perceived range advances manifested by contemporary Russian integrated artillery fire support systems.

This level of performance was demonstrated as far back as 2006 by the then Denel Naschem with the M9703 hybrid base-bleed/rocket-assisted Velocity Enhanced Artillery Projectile (VLAP) version of its Extended-Range Full-Bore (ERFB) 155 mm artillery projectile. In that instance the ERFB VLAP projectile was fired from Denel’s G6-52L self-propelled howitzer fitted with a Losvoor 52-calibre/25-litre tube and using a charge comprising six M64A1 propellant modules to give it a muzzle velocity of 1,015 m/s. However, neither the 48 kg M9703 projectile; its associated charge system; nor the Losvoor ordnance system (which is no longer being marketed by Denel), are compliant with NATO’s Joint Ballistics Memorandum of Understanding (JBMOU). The latter constrains projectile weight to 43.5 kg and chamber volume to 23 litres.

The established Assegai JBMOU-compliant 155 mm projectile family does already include two VLAP variants: the M2005 high-explosive (HE) projectile filled with 4.3 kg of TNT/HNS and featuring natural fragmentation, and the M0256 IHE-PFF version with press-filled PBX4 insensitive explosive and pre-formed fragments (PFF). In a standard atmosphere both can be fired to 41 km out of a 39-calibre/18-litre tube (muzzle velocity [m/v] 827 m/s), and to 54 km out of a 52-calibre/23-litre tube (m/v 950 m/s), respectively using JBMOU-compliant five-module and six-module charges.

This is utter absolute madness.

If NAF goes for through with this deal with the US, it would be the worst decision taken by the Nigerian military in decades .

I mean, for a crop duster with guns, that's ridiculous! It makes no sense, they basically want to "open office" on our heads.

No benefits to be gotten going ahead with this.
