i am trying to fathom how you can hire someone who has a criminal record, when you job is to keep track of this criminals

The South African Police Service recently admitted that hundreds of serving police officers are convicted criminals. The figures are shocking but they fail to reveal the full extent of criminality in the police.PDATE – 23 July 2014: Last year the South African Police Service revealed that a “protracted” and “thorough” audit of the police’s ranks had found that 1,448 serving police officers were convicted criminals. Lieutenant-General Nkrumah Mazibuko – the acting deputy national commissioner for human resource management – told the country’s parliament at the time that action would be taken within a year to clean out the police’s ranks. Pressured by MPs for a timeframe, he offered a “temporary date” of June 2014 for the police’s fitness boards to finish evaluating all the cases.

That hasn’t happened. According to a report in the Afrikaans daily newspaper, Die Burger, South Africa’s new police minister Nathi Nhleko said this week – in response to questions from the opposition Democratic Alliance – that all 1,448 police remain on active duty. According to Nhleko, the Labour Court ruled last month that the work of the fitness boards was illegal, invalid and without any legal force. This followed legal action by the police union Popcru. The South African Police Service (SAPS) revealed recently that 1,448 serving police officers are convicted criminals, among them a major-general, ten brigadiers, 21 colonels, ten majors, 43 lieutenant-colonels, 163 captains, 84 lieutenants and 716 warrant officers. And it has hesitantly promised to rid the police of these “unwanted elements” by June 2014.

Is this, as the police implied, the extent of criminality in the police service? If true, it would mean that fewer than one percent of South Africa’s 157,470 police have been involved in criminal activity. Furthermore, is the commitment to rid the police of convicted criminals serious? If so, what is the evidence?
National police minister Nathi Mthethwa described the audit which produced the figure as “protracted” and “thorough“. The 1,448 police it uncovered had all been convicted of “serious crimes” ranging from murder and attempted murder to rape, assault, corruption, theft, robbery, house-breaking, drug trafficking, domestic violence and aiding escapees. At least 64 of them are currently based at police headquarters.

It's funny how you always dig out whatever dirt you can find on South Africa. Make peace with whatever beef you have. Get over it. Digging out articles from 4 years ago. Hundreds of police officers have been fired since then for being criminal elements. It's clear there was a time in South Africa's past where the correct checks and balances were not made.

As for "you can't fathom". Yes you can, you can very much fathom such. Or if we were to dig up dirt on your native land of Sweden we wouldn't find anything? Please.

Crime Intelligence: Convicted robber Captain Morris ‘KGB’ Tshabalala ‘fired’ following arrest and denial of bail

After working for the police for years despite having a criminal record, controversial Crime Intelligence officer Captain Morris ‘KGB’ Tshabalala has finally been 'fired' from the service. By ORATENG LEPODISE. 1

Just days after being denied bail on corruption charges, Captain Morris ‘KGB’ Tshabalala’s employment with the SAPS appears to have been terminated.

This comes after it was revealed in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Pretoria last week that the Crime Intelligence officer had been convicted of armed robbery and sentenced to 10 years in jail in 1996, which he failed to serve despite losing an appeal.

On Monday News24 reported that the police had fired Tshabalala. But police spokesman Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said Tshabalala had been dismissed in 2013 and had not been on the payroll since then.

Naidoo’s comments are contrary to details contained in an indictment presented to the court last week that indicated that while Tshabalala was arrested in connection with an armed robbery in Sasolburg in 2013 and for which he was sentenced to 10 years, he remained on the police payroll despite being “dismissed”.

According to the indictment, Tshabalala served two-and-a-half years of his 10-year sentence before being released on parole.

On his release in 2015, Tshabalala returned to work at Crime Intelligence where he has been receiving a state salary of between R20,000 and R30,000, and has the use of a state vehicle with a fuel allowance of up to R8,000 and a R1,500 cellphone allowance, the indictment stated.

Officials from the Independent Police Directorate arrested Tshabalala on 16 January 2018 when he arrived to meet with his parole officer.

He is now facing five charges including fraud, corruption and theft relating to payments made from the Crime Intelligence slush fund. On Friday he was denied bail.

According to the state’s case, Tshabalala claimed R478,900 from the fund to pay for blinds and curtains at a safe house but paid only R270,000 to Umwezo Wethu Promotions CC for the work done. He allegedly kept the remaining R208,900 for himself. Umwezo Wethu Promotions CC allegedly also paid him an additional R50,000 as a kickback.

In a second transaction, Tshabalala allegedly claimed R85,105 on behalf of the same company but only paid over R39,500 to it, keeping the rest for himself.

“This (Tshabalala being fired) is long overdue. Captain KGB should never have been appointed in the first place as a convicted person fleeing from justice. This points to an abysmal failure by the SAPS vetting processes,” said Zakhele Mbhele, DA Shadow Minister of Police.

Tshabalala first joined the SAPS as an intelligence gatherer in 2001 despite his 1996 conviction.

In court last week, his lawyer argued that Tshabalala had not evaded prison but failed to serve his sentence as he had been misinformed by his legal representation at the time.

“I continued with my normal life in and around Gauteng after that,” said Tshabalala.

According to state prosecutor, Advocate Chris Smith, Tshabalala has been bragging about enjoying protection from police heads and some politicians.

Tshabalala denies this.

Commenting on Tshabala’s arrest, Gareth Newham from the Institute of Security Studies said: “Crime Intelligence is highly dysfunctional because people at the top are not doing their jobs.”

According to Newham the profound dysfunction in SAPS started in 2011 during the presidency of Jacob Zuma and it has since been declining.

Newham said the problem the Crime Intelligence division has is its senior management. “This is one small arrest when there are a large number of senior people who should be dealt with,” said Newham.

He said Crime Intelligence was a critical division within the police as it helped tackle organised crime.

“IPID cannot fix the problem in Crime Intelligence, it is SAPS that should do this... We have heard nothing from the national commissioner about fixing the problem in Crime Intelligence,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mbhele said that “if the police leadership was seriously committed to fighting crime, it would not elevate compromised individuals to top positions. link https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2018-01-29-crime-intelligence-convicted-robber-captain-morris-kgb-tshabalala-fired-following-arrest-and-denial-of-bail/#.Wm_5yoKgfDc

When two great and powerful country meet in disagreement, it’s a recipe for disaster and catastrophe, but when the reverse is the case, great things can be achieved quickly. Such is the case when the Nigerian Chief of Army Staff met with his South African Counterpart in Johannesburg.

Both countries are a powerful hegemony in their various geological domain in Africa. Nigeria in West Africa while South Africa in Southern Africa.
Earlier this week, Nigeria's Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Yusuf Buratai visited the South Africa to promote bilateral relations. He was hosted by his counterpart Lieutenant General Yam Lindie SANDF. He will also be hosted by the various South African service chief later this week.

The Nigerian CAS visited numerous South African defense companies such as Denel Land Systems, Rheinmetail Denel Munition facility. He hinted that Nigeria and South Africa should collaborate on developing its defence industry. He said specifically that:

“We appreciate the South African defence industry – they are well advanced. This is an opportunity to look at various areas to improve defence procurement.” General Tukur Buratai

Both countries have been participating in training and exercises, such as Exercises Airborne Africa and Exercise Amani Africa, and will continue to do so - in April Nigeria will host the African Land Forces Summit 2018 along with US Army Africa.
He pointed this areas that Nigeria is interested in;

Communications equipment
Logistics management,
Infantry fighting vehicles
artillery
Infantry equipment
And other equipment and solutions.

National Rivalry
As with major regional powers, South Africa and Nigeria has always been in major socio-political, economic and diplomatic battles for supremacy. Despite the quarrels and dispute, both countries usually stand on the same team when it comes to the interest of Africa. Such an example is when Nigeria provided financial and socio-political assistance during South Africa's struggles to end Apartheid.

In 2012, there was a salient diplomatic clash between both countries at the AU summit in January, over recognition of the government in Guinea-Bissau which Nigeria was supporting and South Africa opposing.
Also, the same year, Nigeria’s continental battle with South Africa suffered a great blow when South Africa triumphed over Nigeria in a keenly contested election, as Dlamini Zuma of South Africa was elected Chairperson of the AU Commission, thus becoming the first woman to lead the continent.

More recently, lingering bilateral tensions were again evident when Abuja ignored Pretoria’s recent invitation to join part of BRICS summit in Durban, South Africa.
Another evident tussle between both countries is the jostle for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council. Nigeria and South Africa have both been non-permanent members on the Council, and Nigeria is poised to begin another 2-year term on the Council beginning in January next year, a record 5th time, a feat parallel to none in the continent, and there is increasing prospects that a single slot would be allocated to the continent on permanent basis, when the Council is reformed and expanded.

Although as of recent, Xenophobic attacks by South Africans on foreigners has continuously caused a rift between the two nations.

ECONOMY AND GLOBAL INFLUENCE

Nigeria being an "emerging global power" country and a member of the economies of Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Turkey (MINT), More recently, lingering bilateral tensions were again evident when Abuja ignored Pretoria’s recent invitation to join part of BRICS summit in Durban, South Africa.
In 2014, Nigeria took the top position as Africa's largest economy after re-basing it's GDP to reflect current realities thereby overtaking South Africa.

As of 2015, Nigeria is the world's 20th largest economy, worth more than $500 billion and $1 trillion in terms of nominal GDP and purchasing power parity respectively. The 2013 debt-to-GDP ratio was 11 percent. Nigeria is considered to be an emerging market by the World Bank.

Also Nigeria is listed among the "Next Eleven" economies set to become among the biggest in the world. Nigeria is a founding member of the African Union (AU) and a member of many other international organizations, including the United Nations (UN), the Commonwealth of Nations and OPEC .

South Africa is also one of the founding members of the African Union (AU), and has the second largest economy of all the members . It is also a founding member of the AU's New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD).

South Africa formally joined the Brazil-Russia-India-China (BRICS ) grouping of countries, identified by President Zuma as the country's largest trading partners, and also the largest trading partners with Africa as a whole. Zuma asserted that BRICS member countries would also work with each other through the UN, the Group of Twenty (G20) and the India, Brazil South Africa (IBSA) forum.

Both countries are Unaligned with any Global power bloc. And has contributed immensely in pursuing peace and development in Africa. Both countries have also committed troops, finance and materiel in various peacekeeping operations in Africa.

corrections, suggestions and recommendations are welcomed as always...
Awesome!! I do read your blog from time to time, and sometimes there are just a few errors that are a bit of putting since a simple google search would be sufficient to rectify the error.

Here are a few errors I found on few of your articles.......Im not going to focus to much on grammar(or content since this is your blog and the content will contain your opinion with regards to certain matters) but more specifically on factual errors:

1. https://www.africanmilitaryblog.com/2018/01/nigeriavssouthafrica.html
---- 32 Battalion was disbanded back in 1993, thus it does not exist!
---- Its 44 Parachute regiment not battalion
---- 44 Parachute regiment houses the 44 Pathfinder Platoon
---- The last major war SA fought ended in 1989 not 1966 as the article suggests.

2. https://www.africanmilitaryblog.com/2017/03/top-10-most-powerful-warships-in-Africa-2017.html
---- Meko200 Armament: 16 RBS-15 SSMs and 32 Umkhonto SAMs for Algeria's AN200 Meko and 8 Exocet SSMs and 32 Umkhonto SAMs for SAs SAN200 Meko

3. https://www.africanmilitaryblog.com/2018/01/top-10-best-and-most-powerful-navy-in-africa-2018.html
---- In the photo: "South African navy Fleet Replenishing Ship (AOR) SAS Drakensberg and a valour class frigate" The description is incorrect, the ship in the photo is SAS Protea Not SAS Drakensberg.

As i said before your blog has a lot of potential, its just a few small things that you need to fix.

At least more than 80 Cameroonian gendarmes late Monday night crossed the international border between Nigeria and Cameroon and invaded Danare, in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The gendarmes, according to sources, claimed that they were fighting Cameroon militants who took refuge in the community.

There are well over 5,000 Cameroonian refugees seeking asylum in Danare 1 and 2 communities following the unrest in the southern part of Cameroon.
Cameroonian gendarmes from Bodam community had, in October 2017, invaded Danare, killing two farmers.
The PUNCH learnt that gendarmes from Cameroon had also, in December, abducted five persons from Danare on the claims that they were suspected youths involved in the fight for the creation of Ambazonia.

A group of Danare indigenes, led by a former councillor in the Boki LGA, Mr. Douglas Ogar, who spoke with journalists in Calabar on Tuesday, said the gendarmes stormed their village at about 2am on Monday and started shooting.

A lot of residents, according to him, had to scamper for safety.
He said, “Our people did not sleep on Monday because gendarmes from Cameroon invaded our community claiming to be looking for Ambazonia militants.
“The militants, who have since taken refuge in the surrounding forests, were also shooting and the whole community was in chaos.

“It is important to recall the sad invasion of Danare communities by the Cameroonian soldiers, which first started on January 25 where more than 80 well armed Cameroonian soldiers with various range of military weapons and arms crossed the international boundary in the Danare-Daddi/Danare-Bodam international border openings and abducted five natives.

“By the time they left on Monday morning, they said their mission was to warn residents of Danare communities to be aware of their return to carry out a military raid which, according to them, is intended to cleanse Danare communities of all Ambazonia refugees’ threat to the Cameroon Government.
“We feel disappointed with the way the Nigerian Government has handled this.

“As I speak, we are living in fear. I am sure they have come to take surveillance and they have seen that the community is porous.”

He lamented that the gendarmes had threatened to come back to Danare to execute the proscription of Southern Cameroonians taking asylum in Danare as a result of the ongoing Anbazonia crises, which resulted in the mass influx of refugees.

“This is a calculated offensive from Cameroon military on Nigeria. They have shown outright defiance to supremacy of Nigerian territorial sovereignty and blighted the consequences of crossing the international boundary to carrying out all sort of intimidation and harassment on already alarmed citizens of Danare, with warnings of their further assault,” he said.

When contacted, the Cross River State Security Adviser, Mr. Jude Ngaji said the matter was being handled at the highest level of government in the country.

Ngaji said, “The issue has gone beyond the Police and the Nigerian Army has just deployed a battalion to the area.
“No Nigerian has been killed and as you know, this is an international issue which is being handled at the highest level of government.”
