It is with great joy that I start this thread to serve as a diary for the experiences and adventures I will be experiencing in Germany.

I will like to give back to this great forum through this thread, because I got all the information and connections that facilitated the success of moving to Germany for studies.

I have been an ardent reader of the travel thread here on Nairaland and it is with so much joy that I now have the opportunity of opening a diary branch representing Deutschland peeps. All the adventure customers are all welcomed no need to mention names.

Few things about myself (I have decided to be anonymous as much as possible for obvious reasons)

I am a young scholar going to Germany to further my education.
I got my class D visa approved of recent and I am making plans towards my forthcoming travel, though I haven't entered full gear. I am a village champion(lol) that hasn't traveled out of Nigeria on a plane before (Don't blame me, blame Buhari lol grin)
The decision to travel out of Nigeria wasn't an easy one, because it feels as if I will be start my live all over from the scratch. But the only consolation price is that, I it will be worth it after all because even people working professionally in multinationals are dropping their resignation letters just to settle abroad (Thanks to NL for giving me the platform to know this).
That is all about me for now, I will update the house about it as time goes on.

I will like to also use this opportunity to call on veterans that have lived or still living in Deutschland should please kindly give advises that can ease my settling down in Germany.

Thank you all for your time.

Thanks bro. If I can vividly remember your moniker here, you were on Erasmus scholarship in Europe.

Concerning the reality falling on me. I think it is worth noting that I have been nursing this dream for several years now and I know what is obtainable there in terms of how rigorous the education system is as compared to UK, how learning and mastering the language open doors and the likes.

I wouldn't mind if you mention realities that will be falling on me so that I can be prepared and not be surprised.
Thank you

Thank you you so much for your words. What keeps me going is the fact that as tough as it ia in Nigeria, I still made my mark in it.

Good luck, man. May you succeed in Germany. Nothing good comes easy, so be ready for challenges that will come. I believe being in Nigeria especially in this harsh era of 'Buharinomics' must have toughened you. If you survived in 9ja, you can survive in Germany. Again, good luck !

Thank you all for your comments. Nice having you around.

There is nothing much to update about now.

Preparations are on going towards my forthcoming travel. I have been trying to contact people living in the state I am going to. I am doing this so that I can save costs of having to stay in hotel or hostel before I start my own housing contract.

I understand that where to rest one's head is always a problem when moving to another country or even state, so I am not really worried because I am so positive all will be well.

I haven't really gotten things I will be taking to Germany because I am lazy and confused about buying the items I need especially wears. Most times, I will leave home for the market to get the items, but I often end up not getting anything because I don't really like what I see and they are over priced.

Joohan. I understand your point but I think it's safe to say racism is a universal problem and I feel it isn't even by geopolitical zone in Germany not after Jigba 's recent racist experience. But all in all God dey.

Try to connect with people living in your intended city.

If you are moving to a big city, goodluck finding an apartment, cause it's really hard and costly too!. Try to look for shared apartments, since you are a student. You could start now to search on eBay and send enquiries. It would be great to have german flat mates, that way you could improve your German. Also, be aware of scammers!. Do not pay for an apartment you haven't seen.

If you can connect with any Nigerian student living in the city you are moving to, it would be great.

For things to buy, I don't think you need much clothes. Maybe a lot of jeans and a jacket would do.

As for foodstuffs, I would say you should get egusi, ogbono, dried fish, dried pepper and stock cube. Unfortunately, that's all I can remember for now. Even if you can't get other foodstuffs, try to get egusi, Ogbono and Maggi. You could easily get other things in afro shops/Asian supermarket if you will be living in a big city. There are even Asian supermarket in smaller cities.

Also, don't get toiletries. They are really cheap here.

I thought as much too, I wanted to mention to him that if he ever wanted to generalise he could have actually mentioned east germans. Though the germans I have met(not in Germany) cant really say if they are west or east but are cool people.

Thanks for the pointers.
I have been connecting with Nigerian students in my state and as it stand i have a contact in my city. As per accommodation, I should have a Studenwerk hostel contract that will be starting in April before this week tuns out hopefully.

Thanks for the list as well. I will never joke with egusi, ogbono, garri and even beans lol. Likewise I will be coming with our local black soap and shea butter as per team natural.

Should I buy enough perfumes? Because a friend told me they are kinda expensive in Germany and even hair cream.

Keep me posted as you remember things I might need to save cost in the first few months please.
Danke Schön

Perfumes are cheap, the one I'm using is even less than 2 Euros. If you mean designer perfumes then it's not cheap.

Hair shampoo/conditioner are really cheap here too. The only thing you should get is maybe hair cream. Except you are keeping your natural hair, then it's expensive. You mustn't use the natural hair products, cause it's expensive.

Studentenwerk? Then you are lucky!. Their apartments are really cheap.

Garri and beans could be get in afro stores, you could get the one you would eat for the first few months.

You see, that's why I don't like to advice people on this forum.

I have lived across five different European countries, (including Germany, France and Italy) and when you try to give others the reality on ground, those who have never seen an airport will be the one urging them on and saying one is a hater. And I don't like to say much. One even said it's because didnt work for me while another said I should mind my own business which I have rightly done.

And no Mr Op. I was in an Erasmus mundus Program but I don't remember saying I got an Erasmus scholarship.

hey
LOL Bros Bros , i was passing by this thread and saw what you wrote. this is totally FALSE and untrue about west germany sad. i don't know where got this info from or what kinda survey you carried out that brought to this conclusion. Please dont mislead people. i live(presently) and study in west germany Rhineland palatinate, close to mainz. before i came to germany a year back i made some good reasearch on quora and nairaland about my state and an indian who had lived in west germany for 10years even said western germans are more open, friendly to foreigners and i'm seeing it for myself here(i'm totally enjoying it here).

normally the west germans where the ones against hitler(east) during the war(read about berlin unification) and funny enough americans where previously the ones even occupying my school(university of applied science Trier birkendfeld, umwelt cmpus, you can browse it) during the war thats why if you've lived there you will notice more of english speakers here than the east part part of germany(you can ask this on quora and you'll get the same answer from people who spent years in germany as foreigners). i have some friends even in the the east like leipzig they never complain about this racism of a thing you say.

i didnt come here to argue with you but to change the impression or notion you created about this place on some people.

Hey Mille i traced this post from you grin

PEACE!! smiley
