I met my gorgeous dark skinned boyfriend in Calabar and love him just the way he is. To my horror he keeps talking about how his face is so dark and he would like to lighten it. I keep telling him how much I love his dark skin but he doesn't listen. What can I do to convince him? I don't understand the obsession with light skin in Nigeria and don't know what to say to convince him in my eyes he is perfect as he is.

I was eating breakfast at his aunties food stall in calabar, he came over to talk to me. He has a beautiful smile and has treated me like a queen since the day we met. I've never met anyone like him. Best place to meet a girl like me would be England.

What evidence do you need? It seems you've taken a personal disliking to me for asking for advice on how to make my boyfriend happy. I'm not Nigerian and don't fully understand the culture, I'm trying to learn and hoped I could get some advice from some Nigerians.

Drop the country and let's discuss your boyfriend's issues.

Maybe his family and his people role like that. Maybe they encourage the lightskin child and discourage the dark skin child.

This happens in a lot of African countries, we are working on this issue, slowly, until then all you could do is understand and rewire his thinking. Bleaching isn't a permanent job, he might just be going through a phase.
