They are illegal if you do not have authority to possess handle or supply them just like guns and bullets
If you are caught with one gun it is not the same as having a container full of guns so the quantity also matters
Stop lying to yourself, in Nigeria chemist are allow to sell drugs that is over the counter but there is no regulation, Codein and Tramadol is not a banned medicine.
Developing countries have problem of drug abuse because most medicine stores are not run by pharmacist but by unprofessional chemist shops, so no prescription in selling drugs.

The north sniffs many addictive substances including gum .

That means if you take away codeine, they will still be addicted to gum and many other common substances.

They have the highest drug prevalence in the entire country, followed closely by the south west while the east has the lowest.

The problem is demand. If there is demand in the East, the criminal good for nothing drug dealers will ply their wares there .

Northern youths need to be educated on the dangers of drugs

I don't know why the igbo here are antagonising the man for this open truth that their brothers are the major suppliers of drugs to the north, therefore causing the epidemic. This attitude of "them against us" is becoming disgusting. I can remember my nysc days in kogi stay, where I served had the Igbo's exclusively as owners of all shops and supermarkets. You need to see how both the old and young drink to stupor from the dry gins supplied by those guys. They don't care about the effect those things have on the consumers, all they care is the profit. It is very bad,and when drug enforcers go after them no body should say "victimization".

What lie have I told?

Have I said they are BANNED
Please show me where i said so

That a thing is not banned does not mean it is unregulated.

FYI Heroin and morphne are not BANNED either but that does not mean you can possess them UNLAWFULLY

That is the key word LAWFULNESS

The issues is not about chemists or pharmacists but about drugs being supplied and traded by unlicensed vendors in an unregulated market unlawfully.

We can go into details of what is lawful or not but recreational use of codeine or tramadol is NOT LAWWFUL in Nigeria.

Is codein an over the counter medicine in Nigeria?
Is Tramadol an OTC drug?

Then what are you talking about exactly?

Codeine is a prescription only drug that means it must not be supplied without a prescrription
It can be supplied only by a qualified pharmacist.

Records must be kept

The whole thing started when Hausa Mia guards wanted something to keep them awake all night. Their gboro was no longer working so they started indulging in overdose of a certain cheap medication.
Eventually they noticed that the effect was making them hyper. So those of them that dig pits, wells and toilets joined in using it.

Gradually, it became recreational which fueled the demand. Before Igbo even started setting up stores in the north, big Alhajis were already traveling down to onistha and idumota to buy them in bulk and ship to the north. They first started it and that how they made money

Good.

Now, a northerner goes to that qualified pharmacist and claims to have cough. The pharmacist prescribes benyllin (contains Codiene) for the customer to treat his cough, unknowingly to him that the customer just wanted to get high.

So who is to be blamed here from this scenario?

Pharmacists do not prescribe. Only a doctor prescribes

Please talk like someone who went to school

Now a patent medicine store cannot dispense codeine. It must be a registered "PHARMACY" with a licensed ppharmacist who must be present before codene is issued. He should record the details of the patient including keeping a copy of the prescription.

Now if iit was a case of one dose of codeine there would be no problem but when codein is being sold by the litre with no record there iss a huge problem

You know that your argument is baseless, in Nigeria chemist sell all manner of drugs without prescription and that is applicable in most third world countries. If someone go to chemist and buy a non banned drug and go and abuse it, that is the person cup of tea. Every medicine have dosage writing on the body and most of the time the chemist will tell the person how to take it.

In lagos how many times have law enforcement arrest all this Hausa people that is carrying drugs on their head and be hawking it.

Have you ever see something wrong with it to talk of chemist shops that is registered with government.

only a QUALIFIED pharmacist should fill the prescription and the amount should not exceed licensed daily limits

Education is key, whose fault that you animals refuse to go to school. Even this professor, based on his ignorant post, is no doubt a product of quota system. Abi it's Igbos fault that your own youths sniff petrol and dog piss as well. This is why I fucking despise this shithole of a country. This animals never ever take credit for their incompetence and stupidity, always looking for Igbos to blame on their Misery. God why were we cursed to share a nation with this pigs. Please divide this worthless hellhole so Igbos would get the fucking far away from this animals. Divide this shithole.
I'm beyond fucking tired of this worthless Savage animals repeatedly dumping their Misery and their incompetence on igbo.
blame Azikiwe! The fact remains that those that have been arrested are major Igbo's,and you can dispute that stat. Whether the northers are unintelligent or not,it is criminal for your brothers to take advantage of them by selling substances that are easily abused by the consumers esp. hard drugs. The recent surge on prevalence in hard drug abuse among the youths in my area is due to the advent of foreigners into the community, mostly the Igbo's. it is a fact.

Well, i really understand your point and I'm not gonna drag it any longer. Peace Fam

In Nigeria people do all manner of unlawful things the fact that someone does it and gets away with it is is not an accepted defence in law if you are prosecuted.

There has been very clear guidance and dialogue between NDLEA and Chemists on drugs like Valium Codeine Tramadol etc. No Chemist will claim not to know and the truth is abusers do not get supply from chemist shops.
No sensible Chemist will take that risk

The main distribution channel for codeine and Tramadol is not CHEMIST SHOPS.

They are street drugs

So if they are slating Ibos t is mainly drug dealers not Chemists though many Chemists may be involved they will not do so openly

This is why they have flatthead

I will first of all start by asking how old you are? Have you lived in the North? I do not dispute the lecturer about Igbo people who own chemist stores selling these drugs to the northern youth.. but this has been going on for ages even when I was a kid in the 90s this people love highness.. they sniff glue, fuel fumes and etc for highness. Before Sharia they drank themselves to stupor.. Most of them back in the 70s and 80s had rich dads that sent them abroad to read and probably mingled with the aristocratic kids who experimented with prescription drugs. This is not a tribal issue but a national issue because if all our youths go this way then the future of the country is at stake...

Public Health England is launching a review into the "growing problem" of prescription drug addiction.

NHS data suggest one in every 11 patients in England is being prescribed medication that could be addictive, or difficult to come off.

This includes sedatives, painkillers and antidepressants.

PHE wants to avoid a situation like the one in the US, where there's been a

They certainly CANNOT PRESCRIBE Tramadol

Define POWERFUL

There is nothing like powerful as a category of medicines.

Is Tramadol Powerless
