Tarila

I took a cab to the house hoping that Sotonye was not back. For the love of God, dinner was not even readyyet. Where do I start from? I urged the cab driver to hurry up.
When we got to the close leading to the house, I asked him to drop me off.
"Here's your money" I said handing him a few notes. I quickly took the grocery bags out of the car and headed down to the house.
When I got to the house, my heart fell when I saw him standing by his car outside the compound. Since hadn't bother to hire a gateman I was the one who usually unlocked the gate in the evenings when he got back from work.
I contemplated between hiding or just walking up to him. My contemplating ended the minute he opened the gate and turned in my direction.
His cold eyes accessed me, I knew what he was looking at immediately
The make up that was on my face courtesy of Ene and the jeans I was wearing. To his knowledge, I didn't own any jeans. Just plain, drab, ugly dresses, he didn't know I stuffed a few dresses into one of the kitchen closets. I knew it was the last place he'd look, since he barely entered the kitchen.
Usually I got home before him, change into mourning clothes and wipe all traces of make up from my face. Hide my Samsung device and fancy clothes in the kitchen closet before he got back.
Today my secret was all out, my only prayer is that I end up alive after what he'd do and I really hope my phone doesn't ring or something.
Finding out about the clothes is one thing, finding out about the phone is another thing entirely. The only phone he got me was the Nokia 3310 to simply receive calls from him and his mother. No one else, he'd lose his head if he found a Samsung Galaxy s6 edge with me.

He said nothing to me, just unlocked the gate and got back into his car. After he drove into the compound, I followed closing the gate after him.
I walked with measured steps into the house, wondering what he'd do once we got inside. Will he be using his golf club, or the Just Cavalli belt or perhaps slaps and kicks?

He got down from his car and walked into the house, not one glance my way. My heart raced as I stepped into the house.
He was standing in the living room looking really angry.
"Welcome" I muttered going straight to the kitchen with the groceries. Perhaps he'd ignore me tonight, who am I kidding?
The same Sotonye who beat me for over cooking macaroni, three weeks after we got married.
Only in my dreams will he let this slide tonight.
I remained in the kitchen waiting for him to burst in and do his worst.
"Tari!" he called.
I froze a bit before going back to the living room.
"You want something?" I asked softly.
"Look into that mirror by the wall, tell me what you see. Humor me" he sat down on the sofa and watched.
I turned to the mirror, me....
He probably wanted to play one of those minds games he came up with.
"Sotonye...i went grocery shopping. They had this make up promo at the store. I only went in and got my face done. As for the jeans I've had it a while now, I wore it during my graduation from culinary school. You don't remember, you weren't around...i... " I was rambling spouting out lies.
"You didn't answer me" he said coldly.
"I....Sotonye I'm. Sorry" I said.
"You know why everyone in your life abandoned you? Your mum, uncle, grandmother?" he asked.
I didn't answer just stared straight at the mirror.
"That ugly pathetic slüt in the mirror, they wanted nothing to do with her because she was worthless. Worthless piece of shït. You can put on fine clothes Tari, put on makeup but you will still remain plain ugly and worthless" he said.
A tear strayed down my cheek.
"You disgust me, I see your face and I get angry. Motherfùcking ape, it doesn't matter how one brushes you up you will still remain ugly Tari" he said.
I wiped the tears off my cheeks, willing myself to be strong.
"Get out of my sight" he spat. I left quickly to the kitchen.
Describe my life with one word, miserable.
I'm miserable.
"I do hope for your sake that by the time I get downstairs again, dinner is ready" I heard his cold voice again.
My eyes snapped up to look at the outrageous timetable plastered on the wall.
POUNDED yam and banga soup.
I guess you know how the night will end
When Sotonye came back downstairs, he had his golf club in hand.
My heart broke again.

Chapter 3

Seven years ago.

Tare.

The book before me blurred and suddenly all I could see was my Tari singing her solo in the choir, she had the most beautiful voice. And the most beautiful face as far as I was concerned. I've loved Tarila since we were kids, she'd been seven then when Ebi had pushed her and collected her sweet. She had simply turned to me, pushed me and collected my own sweet. I've had feelings for her since then and I've always hoped to marry her. As a matter fact, I will marry her. When I'm all grown and rich of course. Then she wouldn't resist me anymore and even if she still put up resistance, I'll have her by force.

"Tare, are you listening to me?" Soty asked waking me from my reverie.
I glared at him because Tari had just been about to kiss me in my day dream. I sighed and thought about those pink lips again. The upper lip fuller than the lower despite the smallness of her mouth. Her lips were sexy, lips of a seductress. Tari was no seductress, she was innocent. Innocence reserved for me to claim in future.
"Focus Tare, focus!" Soty yelled.
"I'm listening to you na" I looked at the equation before me again but my brain once again wandered to Tarila. Just last week I'd kissed her, her first kiss I'm sure. No boy will dare kiss her again, not while I'm alive.
"Are you thinking of that girl again?" Soty asked frowning.
"She's not just some girl" I replied. She's my Tari.
"She's just a girl, a distraction. She's not what you need now. I know she might be trying to tempt you but you must ignore her" Soty warned.
"Trying to tempt me?" I smirked.
If only she was truly trying to tempt me.
"Those short skirts, and whatever she does to you at the back of that house. She's not the type of girl you need. When you go abroad, you'll meet girls with class, educated , rich girls. Tarila has nothing to offer you" Soty advised.
I simply ignored him, what did he know about Tari?
"Whatever you're doing with her stop it, if her grandma finds out she's been sleeping with you. Tari becomes your responsibility, she's a burden to them and they'll do anything to get rid of her. You don't need that, have you slept with her?" Soty asked.
I've Only kissed her forcefully, Tarila is not a slut, she doesn't sleep around. She's a virgin, but I don't tell Soty anything. It's not his business, let him think whatever.
"Tare I want what's best for you, you have a bright future ahead that girl is simply bad luck" Soty warned.
"Can we concentrate on this work?" I snapped angry that he was insulting Tarila.
"Fine" he said and began to teach me again.

Later in the evening when Soty had left for his friend's place, I went to see my friends.
Anyone would think I was useless based on the kind of friends I kept but isn't it wrong to judge a book by its cover?
Kanan and Brazil were bad boys but they were very smart. People judged them simply because they had tattoos, multiple girlfriends and they smoked. Soty had warned me to stop hanging out with them but when have I ever listened to Soty.

I hated the fact that he tried to make every decision for me, acting like my father simply because our dad was late.
Can you imagine, Layefa hasn't ever come home for years because Soty had sent her to a boarding school in Ghana?
Soty made every decision, it drove me mad.
I accepted a wrap of Mary Jane from the guys and lit it.
"Why you dey bone?" Kanan asked.
"my yeye brother just they bad mouth my babe" I frowned.
"That guy sef, he too dey feel himself" Brazil hissed.
"I dey tell you, the guy dey vex me. He talk say Tari na bad luck" I frowned.
"No dey listen to am, he no get sense" Kanan hissed.
"He no get sense at all" I spat.
"Guy concerning that your babe, if you leave am like that another guy go hit am o. Before you come back, she don marry, born" Brazil said.
I thought about what Brazil said, it was true. Especially after Tarila had talked about a strange boyfriend the other day.
I remembered Soty's words, if they find out I'm sleeping with Tari she becomes my responsibility.
But I'm not sleeping with Tari...at least not yet.
I will do anything to have that, no one else but me must have Tari.

Seven years ago.

Tare.

Sotonye grabbed me by the collar and forced me to look at him.
"Didn't I warn you about that girl Tare?!" he roared.
I cowered, Sotonye was a beast whenever he was angry.
"Soty....calm down na" I begged.
"Shut the hell up, I told you to stay away from that girl. You let her seduce you and now she's pregnant. Are you mad?! What about your future, your scholarship, what were you thinking Tare!" he shouted.
I froze, "Tari is pregnant?" I asked.
"What were you thinking?!" he shoved me against the wall.
My back was hurting, he'd been going on for a while now.
"Sotonye don't kill my son o!" my mother yelled from outside the room.

Sotonye had locked us in his bedroom so my mother would not interfere.
"After all the sacrifices I've made for you Tare!" He shouted.
"You let that lowlife seduce you!" he shoved me harder now.
"Tarila didn't seduce me" I said coldly. Far from it, hell I wish she loved me enough to seduce me.
"Then what happened?" Sotonye asked.
"I raped her... " I said shamefully. It was the truth, she wouldn't let me in. I broke in by force, I felt that if I'd claimed her virginity she'd be mine.
How could I have been so stupid? I didn't even think about pregnancy or any other thing.

Sotonye laughed harshly before bringing his hand to my neck to choke me.
I tried to gasp, struggling for help. My brother was a monster and ever since my father died, he governed the house with tough hand.
"God help me Tare, I will kill you this minute" he growled.
My eyes begged him to forgive me because I couldn't speak.
"Listen to me little brother, we will go to their house today and you will tell her brothers that Tarila has been making advances at you. Tell them you've been trying to brush her off but she wouldn't listen, tell them she forced herself at you, seduced you and you gave in" Sotonye said.
What, how can I? After all the pain and heartache she's gone through because of me.
I took her virginity from her by force, got her pregnant and now he wants me to lie against her.
I shook my head and he squeezed harder.
"Then prepare to die, I won't have a fool for a brother.
I struggled against him but he was stronger so I accepted. I accepted to do what he'd asked.
"Good, leave the rest to me. I'll handle it, all you should bother about is your scholarship. You'll be going abroad in two weeks, don't screw up" he glared at me.

It was that day I disowned him as my blood, what he did when we went back to Tarila's house was unforgivable.

I hated him, despised him and wished him death. He took away my woman from me, my unborn child would not know it's father.

I vowed not to forget about Tarila or my child, I'll be back for them when I get back from the states. I will be back for them and I will be back for Sotonye too.

Sotonye will feel my wrath.

Two years ago.

Tare.

I checked the time when I woke up from my troubled sleep. It was after seven o clock in the morning.

I'd dreamt of Tarila as usual, in the dream we were separated in opposite directions by a wooden bridge.

She looked unkempt and dressed in a ripped dirty white dress. Tears were streaming down her face, she looked anguished.

I took a step towards her trying to find out what was wrong with her, but with every step I took something pulled her backwards and further away from reach.

In the dark I saw what was pulling her backwards, Sotonye was standing behind her laughing wickedly. He looked me in the eye and said.
'You will never have her!'

I was jolted awake by my alarm clock, what the hell was that all about?!
I've always dreamed of Tarila but this one was really intense. It felt real, like it was happening.

Sotonye will never be an obstacle again, he'd cheated me once but not anymore. I doubt he'd even exist after today.

On that note, I picked up my phone and dialed an all too familiar number.

'Hello T what's up?" Brazil answered once he picked.
"Hello Brazil, how you dey" I greeted.
The minute, I came back to Nigeria I contacted my guys. They didn't know much about Tarila and Sotonye so I contacted Layefa.

She's the only one I could trust, I couldn't call my mother because she stood firmly behind Sotonye's decision to claim my woman and my child.

I'd wondered for days if my child was male or female. I secretly wanted a female, one that looked like her mother. She'd be six years old now, in primary school.

Rage blinded me as I wondered if she called Sotonye 'dad'. That bastard has no right to claim my child.

I contacted Layefa who was shocked to hear from me, she complained about me not replying her letters or anyone's message.
I apologized and gave her my reasons, I wanted nothing to do with Sotonye or my mother. Layefa was special to me, she was my favorite before Sotonye had sent her to Ghana to isolate her from us.

Layefa filled me in, she said Sotonye was very rich now. He'd invested in a ponzi scheme and made a lot of money, he also had an electronic store. Mama on the other hand, had lost her sight. She had a surgery but she could barely see, just shadows and really blurry disfigured images.

I didn't care for them so I told her not to tell them I was back and in Lagos too. I asked about Tarila and her child but Layefa knew nothing about them, she said Sotonye never mentions them.

My heart skipped and I wondered if Tarila was safe, if my child was safe. I was glad when I heard that Sotonye didn't have children of his own yet, I'd always hoped he wouldn't have any with Tarila. I begged Layefa to find out about Tarila and my child for me.

The next day Layefa had called and updated me a little on what my mother told her.
Tarila had a miscarriage a month after she left for Abuja with Sotonye and she'd graduated from a culinary.

My blood boiled, I bet Sotonye had something to do with my girl's miscarriage. And he had enough money to send Tarila to a good university but he hadn't.

Since that day I'd plotted again Sotonye, I'd watched his every movement like a hawk. That was why I planted princess in his life, to monitor him.
Can you imagine he told princess he had no wife? The bastard always confided in princess and she reported back to me.

Back to the present, I'd hired Brazil to follow Sotonye to the airport. I don't know how Brazil would do it, I don't care but Sotonye must not get to that airport.

As a matter of fact, he has to die in a car accident in a few minutes. After his death I'll come to claim my sweet, innocent Tarila.

And I will love and cherish her till I die, Sotonye will never come between us again.
