Whatever you see on the marriage list in any part of igbo Land is negotiable. They will argue but later accept whatever offer you have as groom to be. Just ensure the family loves you.

No marriage list is fixed. As for Bride Price, I have not seen where parents took it. You may be billed 100k, they will only take 1k out of it and return the rest to you.

Proccess in Marriage rites are always fun. Don't mind those elders initial gragra.

As for Afikpo North:

20 Tubbers of Yam
4 Sticks of Fish
Palm wine
Just some drinks.
The real bride price is N10

Even if they tell you 10k, the father can only take out N10 and return the rest. My dad never took anything ... He does not even admit any long list for his in-laws. He trained all my sisters to fullest and peak.

Whatever household property you buy, the bride's family will add theirs to it as a send forth gift pack for their daughter. It is yours at last.

Yes. Dis still depends on d brides family, cos a friend of mine who got married from oraukwu, d bride's dad is wealthy so I asked to take care of all entertainment and the guy spent about just 300k, bride price, d man told him to bring 30k, the man collected and took 1k outta it and returned 29k.
This is a good one.
The family knows that if they eventually took the money. They are indirectly selling her out..
To them its custom and tradition, but to the husband, its meant they ve sold their daughter..

Truth be told! Igbo girls are pretty and very healthy, with no smelling pvssy. If you want to ''chop'' good soup with semo, pay for it! That said...
Poor families may have one or two shylocks who may want to high-up bride price but rich families will say, their priority is for you to take absolute care of their daughter. Above all, kinsmen may ask for about 50k with other minor things but the girl's father may just take 1k therefrom and give the rest back to you. It's sweet to marry Igbo because they stay in marriage.

2016, and two years later this made front-page.

My cousin got married from Agulu, in anambra state. Those people demand no be small, they refused to let him take his wife home because bar soap for umu-ada was not complete, ordinary lux soap.

Two months later__There is something called "Amaram uzo ogo"(getting to know your in-laws place), that one is also another avenue for extortion. The girls father demanded for take home package (10litres of palmwine and a goat and some other stuffs including cash), the mother demanded for hers, the age_grade("umu agboho",don't know if I spelt it well). Umunna also brought theirs, they wanted to kill my cousin that day.

After everything, my cousin just smile give them, shebi una go wait for wedding tire, him own be say him Don marry wife.

For my sisters, we collected 100naira as bride price. A he-goat because our dad is late and crate of beer. The rest are drinks and cola for Umunna, umuada had chewing gum and 3k, while the village requested for the normal drinks which will be consumed during the traditional marriage proper. For my mum, she was bought cloths, fish, soap, a bag and some condiments she will share to her friends. So roughly, the groom spends below 120k for bride price drinks and the rest. We as a family contributes 50% for the cooking in the traditional wedding celebration. I am from Ihiala in Anambra State.

Any idea about Ndiowu in Orumba North of Anambra State. What are their traditional marriage rites biko?

Who cares about the misconception.?

Man wey want marry will make the enquiry from his bride to be, or is there something else I am not getting about this thread?

This list is from Obubra LGA in Cross River State. You can compare for yourselves.I thought I take a snapshot of the list and upload, but it's not giving me clear images. But as a matter of fact, the total cost of the list is less than #150k.So Obubra is still better.

I'm from Anambra state, Aguleri to be precise. With N200,000(if you ain't an indigene) in your pocket you are good to go depending on the family. If you are an indigene, it will be lesser.

You can invite the whole Nigeria if your pocket is fat enough.

My auntie got married in 2013, after summation of everything(Kola's, ewu nna, drinks etc) we got 86/7k, excluding cooking expenses and 8 gallons of palm wine bought by the in-laws. Don't know how much was collected for her dowry.

2017, another got married to an Edo man, same procedure but we had a little increment because of Change. It cost her hubby 200K of there about to perform all the traditional rites. Edo people paid 5k for the dowry, 2k was given back to them.

Same thing to the one that got married just last year to an Ogoja man. Ogoja people paid 5k for the dowry also

So, it depends on the family of the bride your are marrying from and their kinsmen.

Don't know where I kept my own copy of the list, would have snapped it.

There's a difference between marriage requirements and bride price. Most Igbos either collect 5 to 100 Naira bride price or forfeit it entirely but marriage requirements goes beyond bride price. The major issue is what is called list. Based on my multiethnic background I can tell that it's same in all of East including Igbo, Efik, Ikwerre and Ijaw but varies to certain degrees depending on clan and immediate family. A strong and wealthy man can wave off the list because his kinsmen would be scared of challenging his decision but an average man that still needs his kinsmen will only be able to beg them to reduce the items on the list.

ABC Transport from Lagos to Zamfara: N8,000.

15 lashes of koboko

1 bottle of alomo bitters.(to soothe your nerves)

2 shots of sango Otta ( to console yourself)

Total cost still less than N15k.

Try beating that.

Of course, the greedy Mbaise folks will not show on this thread.

From Umudike -Umuahia, Abia state.

1. Dowry - 60 naira
2. Marriage List - when monetized is approximately 250 to 400k.
But this is subject to negotiations and diplomacy. Don't allow any yeye village uncle/elder to dupe you oh. You mustn't pay everything or satisfy all the requirements in the list. Sometimes, if the father- in-law is thoughtful and nice, he'll make everything easy for the intending groom. He won't allow the Umunna to have their way negatively.

N. B.: the Marriage List is not general, every clan or community or even kindred have their own specific list.
