Interesting topic. As at year 2006, bride price from my place in Unubi, Anambra state was 2k. But now it's been increased to 15k. Everything on the list plus the bride price should be between 150k and 250k. Party depends on what and how you want it.

Some will say 250k is too much but they can spend it on a birthday party alone while waiting to take away someone's daughter on a very cheap price. No wonder their marriage crash so quick.

With just a goat, 100 litters of palm wine, coconut, colanuts, some few money say about 50 - 80 k den bride price depends on d umunna.
The rich relatively collects cheaper.

From my own family, when monitized, it have always summed up to be around 250k - 270 apart from the normal celebration.

If u wanna celebrate and call the whole world, it's ur own cup of tea den.

Obinagu, Akpugoeze in Oji-River LGA of Enugu State.

Our Umunna (family) list is in itself ridiculous...a goat, 2 cartons of beer, 1 carton of malt, 1 carbin biscuit, 1 snuff and a cigarette. I remember we had a discussion to remove the cigarette because it's not healthy. Bride price is negotiated and is made to be somehow filled with drama in accordance with the tradition. But it's typically between 0 naira and 20k but that depends on the father of the bride to decide what to accept. Even with this list, we had a bad groom that came to marry our daughter without our goat....People can be funny sometimes you know.

I understand your concern bro but based on history of what has occurred here on nairaland, this thread is very on point. I will create that one later. Let's get this to front page. I will keep pushing for it and bumping the thread as the case may be.

EDIT: There is another thread another thread on nairaland which I saw yesterday. When you take a look, you would understand why setting the record straight is very important.
"bumping the thread?" ayam not understanding.
What exactly are you planning to bump? tongue

Are these figures quoted here correct? There was a lady i was supposed to marry years back, her friends same Igbo ladies told me it is going to cost me all my savings to marry her. So all those were lies? like seriously? The stories you have to buy car for father and keke napep for mama? Millions for bride price? God. I have to apologize to someone. I just made flimsy excuses to end that relationship Nneka i am really sorry. May God forgive me. I am happily married and wish you well wherever you are today. A good lady and an Angel.

U can buy phone 250k but u can't marry with 250k.

I can even buy car 1.7m buy no one would say it isn't my property because I paid for it. You can't compare a human being to a mobile phone can you,?

Bride price = N30 naira
Marriage List = N300k

Who is a fool? We go school abeg. What is bought is bought. Hiding under "list" is no escape from the truth. Why not allow the groom bring whatever he can afford? Why make a "demand"?

Just like a phone seller that demanded 250k for phone and we pay. The phone becomes a property. So father or kinsmen demanding 300k list for daughter and we pay equals a property just like the mobile phone.

What is wrong is wrong and should be abolished. God knows I would never sell my daughter. My father did not sell my sister.

I believe who ever that is ready to marry a woman will do his best, all these controversies over list is really unnecessary 'cos it is every clan to there own. That being said, I am from abia, umuahia north precisely. With like 200k one can conclude both men and women list because the who process is negotiable. Many men even when given the wife FOC will still complain.

I'm from Ezza in Ebonyi state, but in Ebonyi state the bride price varies from community to community, so In my own Ezza community, the biggest pride price is called (afia efi) that is cow price and it still ranges from family to family. Some collet 20k,30 , 50k up till 70k depending on your in law umunna. Every other things na Jara.
But 2 goats must follow, so just budget 200k to 300k for the traditional wedding, still it's depends on weight of the wallet of the said guy.

From my part of Anambra, close to Uga, bride price is N60 only.

You will also bring the goat for the umunna.

Whatever amount the groom brings for the party is what will be used to celebrate the wedding. If you bring 50k for food and drinks, na 50k food and drinks go be there. However, the bride's family can decide to support.

No be Uga wey I know?
Told a girl from Uga that I ve got 400k and asked if I can come and ask for her list?
She said that's too cheap for her #poor family.
This was like 4 years ago. Till today, she still never marry o.
Waiting for the maga them go hammer on top him head with 500k and above.

For those complaining about the money, marriage is not for kids that are still living with their parents.

It's not for lazy people or folks who haven't figured out what and who thye want to be. And hey, how rich you are doesn't determine if you are Ready for marriage either.

My lil sis' traditional wedding held last year in Uga. I stood in for my late father that day.

The bride price has no particular tag. In our case, I think after some (jovial) back and forth, they brought 15k. I took 1k from the money and then blessed their union with the remaining.

The bride's mother (my mom) was given 8 or 9k - can't really remember now. Bottom line is other than the stuffs on the list, the rest is easy.

However, see the list below.

Keep deceiving yourselves, who told you that they don't sell their women for example, there was this woman living close to my house whose husband do maltreats her everytime and it got to a time when people adviced her to move back to her parent's home for the time being she refused saying that her families won't allow her back and that if she ever did they will be the one's that will take her back to her husbands house due to the fact that he has paid her bride price, that was so shocking but irrespective of that I always try to respect every culture.

Tell her to come back and tomorrow she will accuse the family to have helped break her marriage..
Women re so damn confused!

I am from Nkanu of Enugu State . to d best of my knowledge there is no arm twisting bride price , that is to say bride price depends on individual families, some might say to d groom not to pay any dime as long as he has done all d customary necessities required of him like drinks for Umunna, umuada which are few gallons of Palm wine, few cartons of beer, stout, malt etc kola nuts, goats for d father&mother may be few other things, in fact d summary is that with 200k u're done including d bride price . However any groom who findeth a good wife can spend triple of whatever the custom requires .

You are very right. The items in the list will remain the same thing all the time but things getting higher everyday. The price ur husband spent that time would have double for the next person coming to do the same thing marriage.
Marriage is for men biko.
