Go sit down. It's either the girl na olosho wey still wan play around, or you no serious.

By the way, you are not supposed to discuss that with her. If you want to get married, do it the right way. Go to her people. Tell them your intentions. They'll tell you what's up.

Don't come up here with baseless fallacies jare

I know that the family of your inlaw has a lot to do about how much you spend. Some family are just out to eat whatever they can get from suitors.
But bride price is your commitment to marry the girl, not the money. My people collect less than 15k as bride price, cheap gin and palm wine, tobacco and tubers of yam. With 150k, you are good to go.
I am from idembia, Ebonyi State

I can even buy car 1.7m buy no one would say it isn't my property because I paid for it. You can't compare a human being to a mobile phone can you,?

Bride price = N30 naira
Marriage List = N300k

Who is a fool? We go school abeg. What is bought is bought. Hiding under "list" is no escape from the truth. Why not allow the groom bring whatever he can afford? Why make a "demand"?

Just like a phone seller that demanded 250k for phone and we pay. The phone becomes a property. So father or kinsmen demanding 300k list for daughter and we pay equals a property just like the mobile phone.

What is wrong is wrong and should be abolished. God knows I would never sell my daughter. My father did not sell my sister.

""What is wrong is wrong and should be abolished""

Pls stop fooooooling ur self on an industrial scale.

""God knows I would never sell my daughter""

What u do wit ur daughter is not the business of any Igbo man anywhere on earth grin.

""Marriage List = N300k""

It's really silly pushing ur mouth into something u don't have any idea about.

""Why not allow the groom bring whatever he can afford? Why make a "demand"?""

Still another stupidity on an industrial scale. U have a zero idea of how igbos marry so pls focus on Yoruba marriages which is equally as expensive as the Igbo one.grin.

One crucial thing to note is;

SOMETIMES YOU'LL TEND TO FIND IT EASIER IF YOU AND THE LADY IN QUESTION ARE FROM THE SAME VILLAGE or something like that.

Some times the whole processes are more elaborate if your people and their people doesn't have good intermarital relationships (if there's anything like that grin) Or if you just sit down dey shine your teeth or dey form Awolowo.

Good Morning Lovely Family,

I come in peace and I wish to indulge your collective contribution to my search. There seems to be air of misconception filled with untrue ideologies on igbo custom of marriage and bride price--at least from the majority of non-igbos who wish to marry an igbo lady.

I do understand that igbos are of diverse customs, tribe and tradition, which stipulate different rules, requirements when it comes to issues of marrying a lady from such regions.

Several months ago, a particular thread hit front page which was created by blogger flirtykaren; I mean lailasblog.com. In that thread, an image of list of items that should be presented by the groom was captured. The reaction of readers to the said list or thread announced displeasure. Some could be heard saying that Igbos sell their daughters; others asked are they gold? Others said they will never marry an Igbo lady. It went on and on.

source: https://www.nairaland.com/3054077/2016-bride-price-umuahia-abia

The sad part about the above mentioned event in that thread is that over 100 blogs have copied same content, same image and thereby circulating what might not be true. I can tell you that that report might be doing more harm than good, beyond what we might imagine. How did I know, I did a google search for the keyword phrase :"Abia State Bride Price". What I saw was a circulation of flirtykaren's post. Some other guys might do a google search and will be greeted by same reportage, which could be detrimental to potential bride of igbo extract.

A certain section of the thread claimed that in their own custom, it is relatively cheap/ affordable to marry a from his/her own tribe. Another said that the list is lie and nothing like that exist in their place. This captured my reason for creating this thread. I would want us to give potential non igbo groom the right information. This could mean that flirtykaren, just like many bloggers in Nigeria, didn't do thorough research and investigation before reporting such thread.

Numerous threads have also been created on same topic which still caused uproar by non igbos while some still claim it is not expensive to marry from their region. Is that the case? Wouldn't be nice if you (those who claim it is not expensive) to educate us on how it is done with broken down procedures?

Are you from Imo State, Anambra State, Ebonyi State, Abia State, Enugu State? What part of these states are you from? Can you be kind and humble enough to educate us how traditional marriage is carried out in your tribe among this states? I want specifics according to how it is done village by village, clan by clan and not one that represent the entire Igbo tribe.

I decided to put this here because we have more married folks around here, as against the Culture section and since Nairaland is quickly indexed, this could serve as panacea or palliative in the future among blogs.

Please this is very important. Thank you for your time.

I come from Ngwo in Udi local government area of Enugu state.

For bride price, The bride's father Or eldest man in the extended family (if the brides father is late) asks the Elder that came with the groom to bring any amount of money that they have. Whatever amount that they bring, The bride's father will take one note n give them back the rest to them n tell them ""We don't sell our daughters""
(Meanwhile women aren't allowed to be present wen marriage is discussed in Igbo land, its a man to man thing)

For drinks, 10 crates of alchol like hero, life, stout, etc n 1 jar of palmwine is our own clans rule for the groom to get as part of bride price, its usually compulsory. The drinks listed above is shared between the brides father n mother and kindred and they will still share it for everyone to drink.
Once this is competed, The woman will follow his husband n his people to go home that day.

The bride's parents or the groom beings money for cooking rice, swallow n all sorts of food to give people who attend (usually the umumma n internal family members), either of them will as well buy malt, mineral and other soft drinks (to share others like women n children)since the main drinks brought by the groom is only alcohol.

The money collected as bride price is usually kept so that in case of a divorce, The bride's people will return that money, It signifies that the marriage is over.

The igba nkwu can be performed later, It involves inviting like everybody u want, But it isn't compulsory in Igbo land, mainly people who have money do it. Poorer people just do the minimum n go home with their wife that day.

2016, and two years later this made front-page.

My cousin got married from Agulu, in anambra state. Those people demand no be small, they refused to let him take his wife home because bar soap for umu-ada was not complete, ordinary lux soap.

Two months later__There is something called "Amaram uzo ogo"(getting to know your in-laws place), that one is also another avenue for extortion. The girls father demanded for take home package (10litres of palmwine and a goat and some other stuffs including cash), the mother demanded for hers, the age_grade("umu agboho",don't know if I spelt it well). Umunna also brought theirs, they wanted to kill my cousin that day.

After everything, my cousin just smile give them, shebi una go wait for wedding tire, him own be say him Don marry wife.

Blatant useless AFONJA lies grin.

am from orsumoghu in ihiala lga of Anambra state. when I had mine in 2008 it was 160k for the items on the list and 1k for the brideprice. when my sister did hers in 2011 it was 220k for the items on the list and 1k for the bride price. why the difference was much btw the two was that I told them my husband was a pastor and I was given a list that doesn't have alcohol or beer just palmwine and schnapps for the umunna's blessings while my sister took the list with alcohol and beer. I also heard the list is been updated every 2yrs depending on the village councils.

No list is compulsory.

And igba nkwu (traditional marrige ceremony) isn't compulsory.

Come to Yoruba land, our culture and tradition is the best.

Have lived in this same yoruba land all my life and I see how they throw their party which u will never find in igbo land ... This same yoruba land will rip you of all your hard end money with all this iya alaga ... They will even ask you to pay money for plane flight and opening of your wife's face money for coming late, e.t.c . Oga if you do your calculations properly you will know or discover how cheap the igbo marriage rights are. Please don't say what u don't know I beg.

Mbaise is a very large area made up of 3 LGAs . Marriage list varies from community to community and be informed that marriage is not for boys but for real men.
