A box of lentils+2 tomatoes+2 onions costs 6-7 euros at most. That's still nowhere near 5k Naira. Something fancier than that will cost more but lentil soup is great as it is.

Lol...my dear, what we Africans call soup is quite different from yours, what you described there is what we call sauce from which you can use to eat pasta, rice yam and noodles. Your lentils (equivalent of green pea) + 2 tomatoes + 2 onions will cost less than N1k here which is an equivalent of 3 euro.

Soup here refers to a much costlier sauce for eating swallow (could be pounded yam, garri, semovita etc); trust me, it's far more expensive than lentils and onions.

I prepared Egusi soup with meat, fresh periwinkle, vegetables and stock fish and okro with fresh fish.
I still had left over meat to make veg sauce.
Still from the 5k I got one paint of garri.

I stopped buying yam for a long time the day one Hausa guy told me a tuber of yam is N1200. I don't like yam so I got an excuse to stop buying. Back home in my village (2017), nobody will pay that amount even for 4 tubers.
