theamerican just said the simple truth. People always have this mentality of not wanting others to eat from where they are eating. That's why many of them always come up with the negative sides of traveling abroad. But one question I will always ask those people is : "Did you travel to your host country legally?"

You can't be an illegal immigrant and expect the system to favour you. Who does that? There is no way you move to a country legally and the system won't favour you. What does one expect when one is smuggled into a country without proper documentation , no single skills and any prior qualification and still expect to be treated like a permanent resident/citizen of such a country?

My advice will always be that for those that really want to travel out should do that legally. If you are a real legal resident in a country which have a working system, there is no way such a person won't live comfortably which can't be compared to living in Nigeria.

And another thing that is making people to want to travel out legally is to be in a system where everything is working. A system that protect the interest of its citizens and residents. A system that care for the aged. A system with a good health care. And that's one thing people fail to know. We don't have all that here in Nigeria. Our health system is bad. So many persons have died out of a simple sickness that is not enough to claim their lives due to poor health care system. Even the simple basic amenities we do not have. We provide our own light by running Generator , we do not have access to clean potable water and so many other things.

And it is high time those discouraging others from moving abroad realized that many are not just moving there to amass wealth but rather to be in a system where those basic necessity of life are their rights which they do have access to 24/7 as long as they live in such a country.

Those are the same things we viewed as luxuries here in Nigeria and can't even have access to in the next many years to come.

God bless you @McSlize, I couldn't have put you any better. That's why the original post focused more on the mindset of the average Nigerian. Like you said, some people don't wanna amass wealth and go oppress their friends and families in the village.

All they want is to see a working system, the respect of the rule of law, fair pay for a job well done, freedom of speech, coming back home to a noiseless house (no generator), being able to have emergency responders come save you at 2am when your asthma attack knocks you down, I could go on and on. These are the little things that people want and a working system provides all of that.

I have a very dumb question to ask. By naturalization, what does that mean? I Googled it and I read what it means but I need an explicit or should I write basic explanation on what it means. Thanks

Very cool thread by the way, I'm following front to back

It means becoming a citizen when you were only a foreigner. From being just a foreigner with visas, temporary residence permits, etc. to having the rights of a citizen (including voting, taking up govt jobs, etc) and all kids born to you automatically take up citizenship too.

Oh, you also get the opportunity to burn your former passport and vow to never set foot in that country if that's what you want. Lol.

Imagine your mindset. Must he build a house in Nigeria? Some people don't wanna go back to the shit hole!e. Some people don't wanna show off to the soot inhaling Nigerians, by building houses they may never spend up to a week in. Some people wanna live and die where they now call home.

On doing business and faring better with €8k ? Your choice! Erm , it's all easier said than done. Ideas domiciled indeed.

From your write up mehn it seems the shithole country is frustrating you. Anyways, people are carving niches for themselves. €8k is about 4m +. l guess if you get the money, you will not know what to do with it. Opportunity comes to those who are prepared for it.

And why haven't you carved a niche for yourself?
People have claimed to have started with just a hundred thousand naira, and now have built mansions and businesses. Do same, since Nigeria ain't frustrating you.
You don't have to wait for 4m.

Of course, I wouldn't know what to do with 4m, should I get it. Same with many Nigerians who spent more than that amount to get educated abroad.

Dear @Kalu61

I understand how patriotic you are and how you believe staying in Nigeria and setting up your own business with money, becoming a landlord, etc. is better than being abroad, that is fine. It's clear where your priorities lie and what you see as a fulfilled life. To each his own.

Without being condescending, it seems you have absolutely NO idea why people seek greener pastures to developed countries. You converted 8k euros to 4m Naira and because it's in millions, you think it's a fortune? Not everyone wants to be a landlord in Ikorodu, Epe or Sango (No disrespect to people who live there).

Nigeria is a failed state. Do you know how many death-traps they import into Nigeria as salvaged cars that people drive on the roads? Do you know how many illegal drugs are on the market because the "owners" bribed their way through the agencies supposed to control these? God forbid your daughter goes to a rich man's son's house, gets raped and you want justice.

Which land can 4m Naira buy? Lol. How many Old people are suffering because there is no system in place for them for life after retirement? That's even if they lived a worthy life before retirement. The state of unhealthy foods in Nigerian restaurants with no regulations in place? The smoke you inhale every day from horrible buses and cars that should never be on the roads!

My God, if we start talking about reasons to leave Nigeria, I'll be 95 before I stop. What business if I may ask can you set up in Nigeria with 4m Naira? (Please don't talk about open a sports betting shop/importing goods from dubai, selling oil, rice, garri and those 16th century business ideas). Do you know how many people have invested and failed, with customers owing them all over? You can't even track a customer down, sue to court to get your money back, etc.

You shouldn't compare a working system to a non-existent system. I'd choose life here in the U.S with NO savings but a roof over my head in a rented apartment, my kids in school, food on my table, etc., over living in even Lekki as a landlord and being at the mercy of a failed country and leaders.

Good lord, educate yourself! Do you know it's illegal for your kids to not go to school? The average American kid goes to school!!! Can read AND write. You constantly have to prove you're fit to be a parent else you lose custody of your kids. How many kids are in Makoko, suffering and have no idea what the future holds?

Don't get me started. "People are overseas for 20 years but don't have even a room here" . How is this a yardstick to measure a fulfilled life? Some people in Nigeria have never even seen a dishwasher/washer/drier before. Many think using them is "Lazy", haha... basic things that make life easy. I'll just leave you to your mindset.

Again, your reasons for deciding to stay is best known to you. Don't let blind patriotism cloud your good judgment.

Finally, you have absolutely no clue how WORTHLESS the Nigerian passport is. As they always say, a good name is better than gold and silver. Get into a fight with any Foreigner (American/European for example) in that Nigeria of yours and let your police judge the matter. You'll know how useless the country is.

This is a typical write of of somebody who the system has frustrated to part ways with. Sometimes, it part of the natural selection. You believe not having a room at home for one who has spent 20years abroad isn't quarantee to a fulfilled life but disagree with the man who is landlord at Ikorodu. People drive death traped cars which you can't afford over there. If there is no good business you think 4m can afford; then you are lazy that shows the level of your acumen. May be one of those people who want good life at platter of gold.
If you are comfortable paying rent all your life because you want easy like, that's your choice.
May be history should tell you that America was once in Nigeria status. That American success is based of African slavery, corrupt global politics. That America keep seeping Nigeria of her oil money. American keep Africa under developed for economic and political interest. That America has ghetto too. That America has beggars too. That America has hopeless people too. That America once had a corrupt system, bad health care and finally, that despite is success has her problem to.
I'm sorry, we are in a shithole country but am not among people who will run away from making my country like American. Nigerian isn't the only country in the world whose passport is worthless like you said. Many people from other countries dream of Nigerian as your dreamt America.
But l quarantee you one thing. Most of you guys at your age bracket aren't better than dudes here. This children from ghetto ends up doing better that you guys there: for those in legal livelihood.

I'll let it go. You failed to answer simple questions: where can 4m buy you a land in Lagos and/or what business can you do with it? Also, I simply explained how people go abroad for quality of life. Apparently, we see quality of life differently so I'll let that go.

You missed the whole point I was passing across so I'll leave you to keep reading and maybe someday, you finally get it. Your "most of the people over there, most of you guys over there" claims show how out of touch you are with reality.

I don't argue with people who can't make counter-arguments without using insults, missing the point, or attacking the other person. You want to defend your country, all well and good.

Have a great day. grin grin grin

PS. This thread isn't an attack on any Nigerian's decision to remain in Nigeria. It's a platform to rub minds on the attractions abroad and if they're worth migrating for. Do you even have that 4m Naira? Lol... do you know how long it would take to have 4m Naira cash in your account?

Nigerian banks will give loans worth hundreds of millions of Naira to corrupt politicians but wouldn't give promising minds ordinary 50k. Go and apply for that 4m Naira loan to set up that awesome business of yours, come back and explain your finding(s).

I rest my case with you. God bless you.

first of all you sounded broken in your last reply on why America is the place to have better life which I disagree. However, you know I can't access 4m naira from bank but you want someone to get €8700 to come over. From where then? Dear Sir, I'm not broken or frustrated, maybe those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. You're 29, you finished youth service last year, you have no job yet, you depend on sports betting to make ends meet, which isn't a bad idea (your life, your decisions).

You live in Umuahia, without a stable job and you're insulting people who took risks to find greener pastures? Your posts show how winning 4000 Naira from online betting is a big deal to you... smh. All your claims about people abroad, how many of it is first hand experience? Have you ever been outside Nigeria? Before you criticize the decisions of people who had 4m Naira and traveled with it, wait until you have been in their shoes i.e. made that 4m Naira. Until then, leave them alone. Lol

If not because your country has failed you, you wouldn't be in that situation. I'm 25, I won't say anything about where I am now or the opportunities available to me. Again, it's a privilege. Not saying it to brag. I know your type, lol. I'm sure you're hardworking. Wait till you apply for jobs and they tell you only people between age 21 and 26 can apply, you'll know why people are giving up on Nigeria.

I play bet cos am expose to football and guy: my hubby. At least it recharges and buy data monthly for me. Since you believe l don't know.May I even ask, do Americans play bet? Hahaha. As for being outside Nigeria, Yes but within Africa not even west African. l was born outside of Nigerian. ln the next 10
years I hope you will be a known millionaire with all the opportunities at your disposal. At that time, kindly invest in Africa.
To put the record straight however, didn't criticize people who travelled abroad. My argument emanated from the fact that most people if given that €8700 will not think of going abroad like myself because l believe they are ideas domicile in our youths but accessing capita has been our challenge.l wish you the best bro.

Kalu61. let's be realistic. In as much as you want to be patriotic to Nigeria, don't you think your peace of mind will be more valuable than being loyal to Nigeria?

Do know that Nigeria can't offer her citizens a good working system and it should be known to you that the majority of middle class persons in Nigeria are making the move abroad to be in a system where everything works and for the future of their children. Why do you think a bank manager will resign from his job in Nigeria and relocate to a country where everything works? Why are our trained Doctors all moving abroad. That's to tell you that there is no hope for Nigeria. The Nigeria system cannot offer them what they truly want.

We don't even have constant light and Nigeria had gained independence for 58yrs now, yet no constant electricity for the masses. Viable businesses cannot function in a country where there is dilapidated power supply and the most of it all, no food for the masses to eat. Wages is static yet food stuffs are always on the rise every passing day. How do you hope to survive in a system where your health is at stake?

Nigeria had failed all of us over the years and the wish of hoping for things to get better is still quite unattainable. For the fact that the government do not value us, some do value their lives and the future of their kids and that's why moving to a system with a functional working system is the best decision anyone will ever make.

"Give me that money and I will fare better with it than going to Europe. There are alot of ideas domicile in Nigeria. Capital has always being the issue. l have a cousin who has been over see for 20years though married but with no single room here" Is not my business what you understand.

l agree with all your points. Our leaders have failed us over the years and the system isn't working, Yes and people leaves in their numbers every year. The only point am making is this. We have a challenge at hand, while some turn these stumbling stones to success and has deter many others from realizing their potentials. But my question is Who are we leaving all the problems for? ls it for Americans to come and develop it? Some people's nature aren't adapted to rigorous life. Some wants the cash no matter the rigorosity: permit me. Life is less stressful over there but millions are living better over here. Calling Nigeria a FAILED state or a HOPELESS place is funny when people are making it as well

Lol, I never heard this wise saying before now haha. I was engaging him hoping he would make a solid case for himself. He ended up talking about my people (yes, I'm American now grin) in a bad way and I wasn't gonna have that. Haha. Just kidding.

No one is forcing anyone to leave Nigeria.
