Agriculture is good, but please train people in science and digital technology. If with my masters, side hustle and job that pays 'well' wants to start training myself in graphics and video editing, how much more for the younger ones. The world is moving digitalized

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday urged Nigerian youths to maximise opportunities in agriculture, noting that ‘agriculture’ is the future of the country that will provide them with everything they need including respect.

Speaking at Blair House, Washington DC, the President at a meeting with the Chief Executive Officers of six American agricultural companies and their Nigerian counterparts including Aliko Dangote and John Coumantaros, again lamented the challenges of the country’s youth bulge, with sixty per cent of the population below 30 years.

Buhari reiterated the need to assist Nigerian youths to access opportunities in agriculture, saying that ‘Agriculture is proving to be the bedrock of the nation’s new economy’ he said.

In his words, “We realized, rather belatedly that we ought to have been investing in agriculture. We are now aiming at food security because of our large population. Our youths, the ones who have gone to school and even those that have not, should go to the farm, to earn respect for themselves.

“Agriculture is providing jobs for millions of our citizens and we are doing well towards the attainment of food security and jobs. The media may not appreciate the work we are doing but we will shock them by the success we are recording.”

President Buhari welcomed the several investment proposals being put in place by the Americans and their Nigerian counterparts.

Agricultural revolution was FIVE whole generations ago. How can that be the future? APC government is indeed CLUELESS.

They are not aware of Artificial Intelligence. They are not talking about ICT revolution. They have no commitment to supply power for industrial revolution. Now they want the people to return to farms!

People, go get your PVC.

Mr President, everyone can not be a farmer but some of us can be. There are many graduates who studied agric related courses and some of these graduates really wanna practise what they have studied. But since those that even studied various agric related courses don't even have somewhere to practise, how are we even sure that those who didn't study those agric related courses will even get. Most of the people holding political posts get unnecessary allowances. Instead of the government to first ensure that all the unnecessary allowances are cut such that enough funds can be used to do the necessary things. Or do you want to tell us that there is no money in this country for that? There are arable lands in so many states in this country that can be used for various agricultural practices. You can create a farm settlement programme such that each state can have at least an agricultural produce that it will invest on. Even if you make fund available for agriculture, how many of these graduates will eventually have access to it. The corrupt elements of which most are politician would have shared larger percentage of the fund, thereby diverting the fund to do so many useless things before it even get to them, that is if it gets to them . Imagine a governor naming many hectares of land that could have been used for reasonable agricultural programme "Buhari Estate", and wants to sell a plot of land at very exorbitant price. Did you not commission it? You leaders are our major problem in this country. Once a programme does not add money to your already existing "embezzled money", you leaders will never really support it. But if it will, then you will give it a full support. Majority of you leaders only go after your selfish interest, you hardly have interest of the nation as a whole at heart. Even if the youths want to go into agriculture, how many of them can afford a plot of land or get access to the machines that they will be needed for mechanized farming. So in my opinion, I think you, your governors, ministers and those at the national assembly should sit down and talk some senses into your heads.
Don't trust that anything of lasting good Will come out of this govt and any that will come in the future..
When the president assumed office, he promised to stop fuel subsidy by raising the pump price of fuel so that the money for subsidy can be rightly channeled into agric and other developmental projects...

Here we are today, he is paying for subsidy while the pump price remains on a high..

No agric development n heavy mechanization. Those that practice on a subsistence level are being decimated on a daily by the rampaging herders either by killing them in the most brutal way or by eating up their labour thereby discouraging them..

Any sincere man that trust that things will be better risk a heart attack...

Sadly, lazy Nigerian youths don't want to get their hands dirty, they want easy money, easy success, they want o drive jeep, they want to own house in Lekki, Abuja and in the village.

Yes, Nigerian youth should go to the farm to earn respect while your children and extended families should be placed in government establishment pass or fail to work and get Southerners to carry files and do the job for them. Pa Buhari, what is happening to the DPR employment test done about four or more months ago? Is it still being manipulated to employs only the Northerners? After all that's the instruction/ trend from the presidency that is why they can continue rob southerners employment.

Earn respect, how?

Buhari keep talking trash about farming and farmers. He has no clue what farmers pass through.

Some of the most disrespected sets of people are farmers.

Has he ever been to farm?
Does he even know know the prices of herbicides and insecticides?

What has his government done to support farmers. The other day I saw Audu Ogbe on TV saying they'll soon reduce the prices of food stuffs in the market.
Can he (Audu Ogbe) farm?

Fertilizers and chemicals keep increasing in price, yet he wants to reduce the price of food stuffs, why can't he reduce the price of fertilizers and farm chemicals?

I've been farming all my life, but that thing is not worth it. I don't mind dumping my B.sc to go into farming full time but farmers in Nigeria are some of the poorest sets of people.

What can he say about that?

Am so so so pained each time I hear people who don't know a single thing about farming talk about it like its an easy stuff.

So many things to type mein, but I'll just stop right here.
don't mind d idiot dullar bubu

If Nigeria does not have enough money to pay 50k minimum wage, why is the current administration proposing 56k and the labour unions suggesting 65k.

The federal government is not proposing 56k yet, you are a youth supposedly trying to wrestle power from the older ones, it is a task for you to at least have a knowledge how your government works.
A committee throwing figures around is no Government proposal until you hear from the head of fiscal policy of the government, she alone can give a clear picture of what the government can afford.
Did you hear any proposal from Adeosun?

How does he expect youths to go and farm when there are herdsmen killing all over the nation and oppressing the owners of farmland. They are living like they own the nation. God will judge Buhari and the herdsmen IJMN.
