That's the importance of security. Shippers prefer Lagos because it is more secure. 6 Likes |

The handiwork of this present administration. They are bent on frustrating the other States with seaports so they can control the resources. 9ja is a blessed country rich in mineral and natural, and human resources but the system is so corrupt that a one year old understands. Buari release the other seaports. 1 Like |

Okoro pple are too lazy to develop their own region. They're too dependent and reliant on "Afonjas" to make things happen. Do they really have to wait for the FG to spoon-feed them? Regressive folks! God bless Yoruba.. Yoruba 4 Life! 6 Likes |

Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan wasted 6 years of his administration feeding thieves in his government. He never thought it necessary to revamp the Warri seaport, Port Harcourt seaport. Even his native Bayelsa deserve an international seaport. But Jonathan forgot himself. 6 Likes

theenchanter: Eastern bound cargo can always use Onne sea port, which is closer to that region. It is not by force to use Lagos sea port. Let the importers do the needful. 9 Likes |

erico2k2:I have been to Onitsha river port, nothing is happening there, I also stay in portharcourt for sometime, people import their goods from lagos which is bad. The moment Nigeria start allowing other states to develop the better for them, you cant have only one functioning state like lagos in a big country like Nigeria and be concentrating all major infrastructural development in one state. In Germany here major companies are giving free tax incentives for moving their companies to Eastern Germany in an effort by their FG to develop eastern germany, In South Africa international airports and seaports are built in such a way that the whole country is covered. Nobody travel from capetown to go and board a flight in Johanesbourg just to leave South Africa. 8 Likes 1 Share |

autojosh: Oga, it appears that you do not do any research before jumping on your keyboard to type long epistles. Calabar sea port has always had a shallow draught. Statistics shows that business activities at Calabar Port has been at its lowest ebb for over many years, due to the shallow draught of the channel that restrict access to smaller vessels and barges. This led the NPA to enter into joint venture agreements with the Calabar Channel Management Company Limited in 2014, to dredge the channel, which was originally 6 meters to 10 meters draught. 1 Like |

theenchanter: Wrong! Onne port started accepting all kinds of cargo, more than five years ago. Consign your goods to Onne, and see if they won't receive it there.... These days, there is even a concentration of exports going on at Onne. Different items from wood/timber to raw materials are exported from Onne on a daily basis. Do your research, please. 2 Likes |

Re: Why Are The Four Other Seaports In Nigeria Abandoned? by obailala(m): 4:45pm On May 17, 2018 |
theenchanter:From what I read, the Onne port is open to everyone that wants to use it, but you will have to pay more to the shippers and also risk losing your goods to miscreants who are strangely now hailed as heroes. In a nutshell, importers prefer to use Lagos because it's cheaper to ship to Lagos; shipping and freight companies charge higher if you choose Onne as the port of destination, insurance companies also charge higher premiums too, and the reason they all cite is 'security'. Unlike the ports in Lagos which open directly to the deep sea, the ports in Rivers and Delta state are inland and ships have to meander through 30-60 km of narrow creeks (which are perceived to be dangerous) before getting to the ports. Final issue again is the depth of the Niger delta ports which prevents them from handling larger vessels. But then again, if we are to examine the other narrative, from the typical Nigerian conspiracy theorist's lazy angle, the Ports in the Niger Delta aren't thriving because the Hausa/Fulani northerners who have ruled Nigeria for long deliberately planned to kill the economy of the eastern region; they also achieve this through the willing connivance of the Yorubas in the west who want all economic activities concentrated in their region. 4 Likes |

Adelaide2: But no be you guys dey use those places and regions dey do yanga so? Of course sensible pple around the world know ur Biafra nation isn't realistic from both economic and sustainability perspectives. There's nothing in okoro-land that can or would sustain them. They pry on the wealth of SS (in assumption that SS will dance to their balderdash tune). So what happens to all the mediocre/supposed 'properties' owned by okoro pple nationwide? Cuz I'm pretty sure the Northerners will be willing to deport you all to Biafra should it materialize... trust me, SW won't hesitate to do the same... The result... Since every Nigerian know okoro pple can't peacefully / happily co-exist for progression and success, "DISASTER" would be the result! 1 Like |
