Nigeria is moving forward though very slow. What killed our middle level skilled manpower was the introduction of management courses into our colleges of technology and education.
Polytechnic is a system used by developing nations to advance their technological development.
We must get things right in Nigeria for us to move forward. Polytechnic diploma in tech is the way forward and must be taken seriously.
This is a welcomed development!!

best news in a while. .. i have colleagues at work on a lower salary scale just cos they graduate from a polytechnic.

the certificate discrimination between Bsc and HND is baseless.

.."A state that had never had any federal institution, like Bayelsa, is to have a College of Technology as a campus of the College of Technology of the University of Port Harcourt...."

I guess the university at Otueke is a federal secondary school. Ignorant cretins

Nigeria begin to wake up now , and in around the world there is nothing called HND in this century. Nigeria still operating backward and expired education and no wonder Nigeria wasn’t recognized in abroad. I’ve been to college and university in abroad and they only use B.Tech college and BSC for university around the world.

shameless country. Nigeria is the only country that wouldn't have a polytechnic system. All thanks to the tussle for Government money. BSC is higher than HND, but in Nigeria the truth is despised.

This development is long over due. Its more like a legal take over of the polytechniques by the universities. Except that I for see a battle for the soul of these polys between old poly lecturers and their new university administrators.
I cannot forsee a university administration awarding a btech degree within the current set up of the polytechniques except offcourse drastic changes are made in terms of personel and curriculum. I know polytechniques where some departments don't even have up to 3 p.hd holders. How will they cope within this new set up? What will happen to their poly trained colleagues if I may ask?
I also think the National diploma program should be redisigned and expanded and made to last for 3years before the award of certificates.

HND is higher than B.Tech on ground. That's why I will always employ a polytechnic graduate in Engineering over a university graduate or better still a university graduate that has an OND. Companies knows this. Before you criticize me, am a university graduate

This story is more than 5 years old and its nothing but fake news, make una dey verify the authenticity of information before bringing it to the public, a simple check would have shown that the Federal Executive Council meets on Wednesdays and not Monday
Galadimat:
Nigeria Scraps Award of HND Certificates by Polytechnics – The Federal Executive Council (FEC) yesterday approved a comprehensive reform of Nigeria’s tertiary education system, scrapping the award of the Higher National Diploma (HND) by the nation’s polytechnics.
In effect, the award of the HND will be limited to only the students currently admitted for the programmes.
Also, all the programmes currently being run by the polytechnics, which are not technology-based, and which are about 70 per cent, will be scrapped.
Under the new rule, the polytechnics will now become campuses of the proximate universities with the Vice Chancellors of those universities appointing provosts for the polytechnics, subject to the ratification of the Universities Councils.
The polytechnics will now be limited to award of the National Diploma (ND) while those desirous of further education will be awarded the Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) by the proximate university.
To kick-start the new policy, the nation’s two most prominent polytechnics – Yaba College of Technology and Kaduna Polytechnic – will henceforth be known as City University of Technology, Yaba and City University of Technology, Kaduna.
And to give legal teeth to these approvals, the FEC approved the submission of two Executive bills to the National Assembly for enactment into law.
With education being on the concurrent list, the states may wish to consolidate their tertiary institutions. But if they do not wish to follow the federal example, their programmes will continue to be regulated by the relevant agencies of the Federal Ministry of Education.
The first bill will concretise the setting up of the two city universities while the second will approve the preparation and consolidation of all federal polytechnics and colleges of education as campuses of proximate universities.
The Ministry of Justice will do the preparation and submission of the two bills to the National Assembly.
Minister of Education, Mall. Adamu, told journalists after the weekly meeting of the council that under the reform measures, her ministry would, however, continue to licence private polytechnics and colleges of education for the award of qua

how can u compare B TECH with HND. It takes good 5 years to obtain the former in any university of technology and its rated higher than BSC.
It takes 5 yrs to get hnd as well and b.tech is not rated higher than bsc.

I think they should introduce a new curriculum to help people with HND already to have B.tech even if is a one year program it Will be an ideal

So, what's the difference between B. Tech and HND.
We can just simply say, certificate changed name.
So, it will still face the same discrimination.
Do you remember when NEPA was changed to PHCN?
What's the difference between the two?

Stop the ignorance.

BTech faces no discrimination. If you fail interview just go and prepare again and stop the excuses

Why not upgrade them to full fledged degree awarding institutions as most of them are far better than most universities. As for 70% of their courses being not tech based and needs to be scrapped, you will always need to close the various Universities of Techs,Agrics in the country as over 70% of their courses are also neither tech nor Agric based.

Policies need to be thought through before being pushed to the public domain.

Is B.Tech a diploma?
Re: Nigeria Scraps Award Of HND Certificates By Polytechnics by frisavic(m): 7:58am On Jun 06, 2018
Actually there is. its called B.Sc.Eng. i.e Bachelor of Science in Engineering. Schools in the U.S offers that.

Because there is B for Bachelors, there is a big difference. Good schools like FUTO have been awarding B.Tech before now.

Those with B.Tech had 5years of education in a University of TECHNOLOGY.

How do you equate that B.Tech and this other B.Tech that is to be awarded instead of HND?

You don't need to equate it. B.Tech is B. Tech. There is an educational path to the award of B.Tech. What this news is simply telling is that anyone that get's admitted into a Polytechnic gets on the B.Tech curricula from day 1. Can it be any brainier?

B.Tech is 5 years in any University of Technology (exclusive to Federal?)
B.Sc is 4 years in any university
Now Polytechnics should be B.sc equivalent not B.tech. Its uncool for we B.Tech holders be paired with Polytechnics.

....if educational standards are improved and rated on the level of "cool", then you have a point
