Nigeria vs Iceland preview, team news and probable starting line-ups

Iceland will be looking to follow up their historic draw with Argentina when they take on Nigeria Super Eagles in their second World Cup match in Volgograd on today.

The prospect of reaching the knockout stages remains a very realistic one for the Europeans, whereas Nigeria are still waiting to get off the mark following a 2-0 defeat to Croatia in their first game.

NIGERIA
For many, Nigeria are a very welcome presence at the World Cup – they always arrive in a blaze of colour and have boasted some of the most skilful African players to have graced the tournament.

However, their record in the competition makes worrying reading, and last Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Croatia has left them facing the prospect of being knocked out in the group stages for the third time in their last four appearances on the grandest stage.

The Super Eagles have now lost nine and won just one of their last 13 World Cup games – with that victory coming against Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2014 – and are on a losing streak of three matches in a row following the defeat to Croatia.

Indeed, they have failed to even score in six of their last 11 World Cup outings and offered minimal threat in their opening game, registering only two shots on target.

In Nigeria’s defence, they have the youngest squad at the tournament, but the World Cup does not allow bedding-in periods for such factors and if they shoot themselves in the foot again – an own goal and a penalty separated the two sides in their opener – then they will likely find themselves on an early flight home from Russia.

Set pieces have proven to be the scourge of the country at the World Cup, conceding 52% of their goals at the tournament via that means since their debut in 1994, which is a higher ratio than any other nation in that timeframe.

That could again rear its head against an Iceland side that is thoroughly organised above all else, and defeat would guarantee their exit from the tournament with a game still to spare.

There are some reasons for optimism, though; all five of their previous World Cup victories have come over European opposition, and Iceland’s underdog mentality should be less prevalent against a team ranked 26 places below them.

Nigeria’s lowly ranking is befitting of their recent form, though, and if they are to save their World Cup lives then they will likely need to end a five-match winless run which includes four defeats.

ICELAND
Iceland already look set to make as big a splash on the world stage as they did at Euro 2016 two years ago, and they are a banana skin most teams would probably rather avoid now.

Argentina found that out the hard way, and while there was an element of luck about their historic draw with the South American outfit – Lionel Messi missing a penalty and Argentina’s other world-class strikers failing to shine – the result will have only boosted the level of confidence which is already out of proportion with the size of their nation.

Indeed, Iceland are the smallest nation by population to have ever qualified for the World Cup, and it always feels as though the entire country is in the stands roaring their team on, such is the passion this golden generation has inspired.

Purely on the FIFA rankings, Iceland are not as big underdogs as it feels; they are placed above 13 other World Cup participants and by that measure should go into this match as fairly big favourites to pick up a vital three points.

However, they are also winless in their last seven outings stretching back to October, failing to pick up a single victory since confirming their place at the World Cup for the very first time.

Events in the other game in Group D could shape the way Iceland approach this match, although with Croatia awaiting them in their final group outing they will know that this is realistically their best chance to pick up a World Cup win.

The last team to avoid defeat in their maiden two World Cup outings was Senegal in 2002, and a similar run to that one for Iceland would leave an abiding mark on the tournament, just as the African outfit did 16 years ago.

Iceland’s record at major tournaments is hugely impressive too, with only one defeat from six matches at Euro 2016 and so far this summer, winning two and drawing three in that time.

Whatever happens on Friday, Iceland will go into their final game still in with a chance of reaching the last 16, but victory over Nigeria would make that eminently more possible.

TEAM NEWS
Iceland are expected to be without Burnley winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson , who picked up a muscle injury against Argentina and is unlikely to recover in time for this match.

Rukik Gislason replaced Gudmundsson against Argentina and looks the most likely to come into the starting lineup in his stead, but Iceland could be otherwise unchanged from the opening-game draw.

Alfred Finnbogason is his side’s form player, scoring in each of his last three international appearances, although Iceland have failed to win any of those games.

Nigeria vice-captain Ogenyi Onazi will be hoping for a recall after being dropped for the opener, and Oghenekaro Etebo – scorer of the own goal in that match – could be the man to make way.

With goals required,Ahmed Musa could also be handed a start.Coach Rohr might resolve the midfield crisis by starting Mikel Obi in a more deeper role not the pure no 10 he played in the game against Croatia while Kelechi could be another possible inclusion.

Nigeria possible starting lineup:
Uzoho; Shehu, Troost-Ekong, Balogun, Idowu; Ndidi, Mikel, Onazi; Moses, Ighalo, Iwobi

Iceland possible starting lineup:
Halldorsson; Saevarsson, Arnason, R Sigurdsson, Magnusson; Hallfredsson, Gunnarsson; G Sigurdsson, Bjarnason, Gislason; Finnbogason

HEAD TO HEAD
There has only been one previous meeting between these two nations, and that saw Iceland run out convincing winners by a 3-0 scoreline in August 1981

I don't even want to think about Argentina match when we have a match against Iceland.

Thinking about Argentina match simply means we have underrated the Icelandic which should not be so.

Let us think about winning this one first.

All this talk is just exaggeration on some of your parts. Are we not the same people that keep hammering on the importance of this Iceland game? Are we not the same people that are looking keenly towards the game? So we should not discuss or mention possibilities again?

Argentina is not out yet... Who doesn't know that? But a win today for the Super Eagles will also be very bad news for Argentina. Nigeria will drive the nail of their elimination in for good come June 26 if June 22 ends well for Nigeria.

They (Argentina) Berra pray we don't get our wind back today because if we do, they better not bother showing up for the last game coz they will be crushed by this Nigerian team. It is not hype.

Allow those to dream who want to dream abeg... After all, most here have been insulting the team and labelling them with all kinda nonsense.

The toughest game for Nigeria will be Iceland. Argentina will not be as tough as Iceland. You can take that to the bank.

You mean I exaggerated when I said Argentina can still qualify either we win or loose against Iceland?

And you mean exaggeration is get a point Argentina will not be tea party?

Well, you can dream on as much as you like and I can also analysis as much as I want. So, leave me with my analyses. Chikena.

Looking forward to an exciting game -Ngr vs Iceland.
Most of the first games in the group stage were a bit conservative and boring.
Africa had two representatives in last 16 four years ago. ... I hope this set can redeem the African image.

I can understand your subtle pessimism maybe down to the fact that we may change personnel upfront. But don't worry, we will disappoint you and others. Today is not "last time". We can beat Iceland if we come out firing on all cylinders and show fine tactical discipline. Iceland are not the only ones that know how to be bold.

And what counter do you speak of? Can Iceland keep the ball? So you expect Iceland to dominate possession against this Super Eagles? I don't think so.

I don't know you have become a wizard to know my mind that I am pessimistic because of change of personnel upfront.

Listen Egbon. You never brought yourself to admit how bad and really piss poor Ighalo was against Croatia. I am sure you insist on him still starting even in a lone striker role today. smiley How can you want this team to fail so bad? Ighalo to continue in his woeful showing for the team? Do you even mean us well? Abegiiiiii... No wonder you were just defending Rohr's starting XI against Croatia saying it was spot on. Omo that attack was not spot on. Ighalo flunked... Four goals in close to 20 games is a verrrryyyy badddd return for us. You prefer a goals shy Ighalo to even an Iheanacho who is more clinical. See ehn... I know where you come from with your comments. So no need for long story.

Just wish the the team well. Ighalo paired with another forward will be much better than him doing his poor lone forward shift upfront again. Think about the team and not the player.

It is funny to label our small discussion of France as taking this Iceland game less seriously when you have seen comments affirming to the fact that Iceland will be one hell of a game. I have stressed it so many times. Others have too.
This is why you exaggerate just to say the obvious.

Both games will be tough but Iceland will be tougher. Argentina is Wack! I am not afraid to say so. They only came with an "attack" to this tournament. They are overrated.

Talking of one after the other, is that not what we all have been hammering here since? So why overemphasizing it as if na only you get focus? This is how our players were always berated for doing common official photoshoots and people came in and took advantage of the moment saying the boys should be focused this, focused that... As if they don't bloody know. Abeg, these obvious remarks are not smart. WE ALL KNOW WE HAVE A HELL OF A GAME TODAY AND OUR MINDS ARE ON IT. Finito.

Countdown to the Nigeria-Iceland cracker

Coach Gernot Rohr and goalkeeper Francis Uzoho attended Nigeria's team press conference yesterday and a little extract of his words read:
"We're living like a family, we have a plan and we won't lose tomorrow (today)." #NGA

By not losing, we better be talking of winning alone. A draw will not be good enough. In fact, it won't be good at all.

If you think Ighalo was poor against Croatia as a lone striker and you think Iheanacho will do better as a lone striker in that match then you don't even know what you are talking about.

Iheanacho has not really done well as a lone striker for the Super Eagles in a competitive match and that was why Ighalo took his place. Fact.

Besides, where did you see me insist Ighalo start as a lone striker against Iceland? That is delusion.

I have suggested that we play two strikers upfront lately and even preferred Simy and Iheanacho though it didn't work against Congo because they didn't really gel.

However, two strikers must be used. That is my point.

Where are you getting all these false accusations from?

Sebi you wanna focus on Iceland... cheesy So let us stay focused on Iceland. All this one you are saying, I did not bother reading much coz I know you very well. If I ask you to name the two strikers now, will you pick Kelechi? Do you admit that Kelechi is better than Ighalo for our goals hunting? Abeg leave matter. Too many coincidences, the team's new kit is even paying tribute to '94's.

Sebi you wanna focus on Iceland... cheesy So let us stay focused on Iceland. All this one you are saying, I did not bother reading coz I know you very well. If I ask you to name the two strikers now, will you pick Kelechi? Do you admit that Kelechi is better than Ighalo for our goals hunting? Abeg leave matter. It will be a welcome devt if you pick Kelechi in any first XI even when we all know he is one of our most effectice and result-oriented key players. wink Na the Vikings dey in sight now..... False impression is what you have. Sorry, you don't even know one atom of me.

Will pick Kelechi among the two strikers?

This is my answer below just yesterday.

This should put the nail in the coffin that you don't know me and all your accusations are false. EOD

forgiveness:

Before I saw this formation, I pondered on having two strikers or a st and a S/S.

Meaning, I will pair Kelechi with Simy though Kelechi will play behind Simy. I know it didn't really work against Congo but it's mandatory we play with two strikers else one is isolated.

In the midfield, I see dem relying on long balls and crosses from the wings because we can't play through the Iceland defence. Argentina tried but failed hence the need to cross the balls into the box or we penetrate through the wings with the creative wingers like Victor Moses and Etebo.

Etebo is also good on the wing. I like this.

Oh yes I saw that of course... You actually think I didn't? cheesy

And no it is not accusation. After all despite you mentioning Simy and Kelechi in that post you never admitted before and after it, how poor Ighalo was upfront for us against Croatia or that Iheaancho would have put in a better shift based on what he did when he came on.

You insist that a four goal one assist in close to 20 games Ighalo is better than an 8 goals 5 asissts in almost 18 games Kelechi. And that Egbon is the worst and most abysmal thinking ever as regards our team. If you want this team's progress as you claim, then you would concede to Iheanacho being the better forward than Ighalo based on Clinicality. Coz Clinicality is what we badly need now and not silly hold-up plays. Finito.

You are talking to a guy who knows the Word very well Egbon. Now let me enlighten you on that verse.wink
The fear you think that verse portrays is not the fear you understand it to be. What God means in that verse is very simple. It is the Fear of God. And what is the fear of God? Living in Fear of God or what next action he will take? Nope. It is simply a consciousness in man that will help man make decisions and live life with respect to the Will of God. That is the fear of God spoken of in that verse that says work out your salvation with fear... Tu comprends? smiley

And should I even tell you that the manner and way in which you communicated your so called facts definitely is to sow fear and pessimism ahead of the 4pm Naija time kickoff? See the way you were even harping as if you dey happy say dem knack us 3-0 for 1981 and trying to make it relevant in today's game. Lol..

Omo listen.. If you are indeed a true fan and believe in this team, you will communicate same facts without the irrelevant bravado and fearful disposition you gave it. That is the honest truth.

I saw this fact too. I just decided not to share it on match day. On my end, I wanna build optimism. But you sharing it is not bad at all... It is informative in fact but the way you did it shows you don't have enough faith in this team. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth (in this case, fingers)..... wink

forgiveness:

How does stating facts create fear? Chineke me!

Why did I post it today!? shocked

I posted today because I saw the article today. So what is problem?

Even God talk say work out your salvation with fear..... You wan question God again? grin

The team took compulsory 5 mins walk before the match...

Coach Rohr was just busy talking to nacho... About tactics is looking like a pointer that nacho will start..

We will know the line up in few hrs..

Did you watch Kun against Croatia? Now that was poor. Ighalo actually touched the ball and was engaged in our game. For a player to be clinical there has to be a chance created. I want Iheanacho to join but not take over because if we can't hold up the ball we won't be able to play and would then have to resort to aimless long balls.
