I Don't know why Nigerians are so weird. P&G is just shutting down its diaper line at Agbara not the entire plant. I guess people prefer false news
Nigerians like false news since it helps promote the narrative of a 'very bad Buhari'.

Since Nigerians are weird and you're a Sudanese, what's making P&G shut down its diaper line within the plant commissioned just a year ago?

Don't relay the crap written in their statement to me, that's an indictment of their actuarial scientists and the lack of foresightedness of their management.

Note that they only gave us exit plans of action, they never stated the reason.
Buhari killed the company

I know that's what sounds good to you

Funny enough most people in Nairaland haven't done any business not to talk of being in manufacturing sector. The policies of government can cripple a firm overnight. The government policy on forex closed my production line. I have to sack my staff and start another thing. Nigeria is the worst place to be a manufacturer, no light, raw materials, waivers etc; yet you are expected to compete with bigger players and sell at affordable price.

Uncle Ogbeni, they are not closing the plant. Just moving the diaper line to their Ibadan plant

Nairaland seems to be the biggest place uve ever worked...

Those with experience know that the above never stated anything factual..it's a gentleman way of of exit.. diplomatic exit..

Use your head small..a company will close its proximity to Lagos office with the million of people in Lagos..then concentrate on Ibadan whey them never chop finish

They have only two lines. Diaper and sanitary pads. So.... Nigerians are not far from the truth. But I suspect the whole plant. Cost of managing the partial line might not be cost effective.
they've got other plants in ibadan..... Detergents (ariel) and vicks lemon plus plant

Is Dangote into diapers production already?

Exit from production equates shutting down abeg. Don't bamboozle people with unusual correctness to save face and PR.

Probably the presidency called them to do a PR all in effort not to make this failed government look bad.

That's the real question

Unfortunately "real question" from you both simply shows that you both need to get out of school and learn the real business world. Did your friend mention an indictment on "actuarial scientists" grin grin.... learning can be exciting and I see a quick urge to show it

1. Some of you want to force-down the "shut-down" narrative on this discourse. It will only make you naive. The company has simply said the publication from premium times is false. When I here stuffs liks "a soul in the company" or an unnamed source, I usually exercise restrain because Nigeria media is fast becoming gossip, scare-mongering and fake news

2. As per reason for the shut-down we can play some scenarios. Let's start from a simple business decision. So their planners realizes that numbers and stats projections favour relocation of the plant line to Ibadan - proximity to raw material network, deeper integration into local markets, state tax havens, cost-reduction objectives..... It could be a correction of an hitherto wrong business decision. If they made a mistake, do you expect them to admit it to you in person and look bad in the face of competition?

Let's not deceive ourselves. The original report we got about P&G facing tough times with importation duties as well as very harsh competition is very factual. They are only using PR to conceal the truth. They know where it hurts. The original info was provided to the media by insiders of the firm. Look, I have worked for multinationals and I can tell u categorically that any info that seems like a rumour in these firms, ends up being the truth.

When I see statements like in bold, naturally one would have expected to see the "facts". You supplied no factual evidence to backup your assertion.....beyond "I have worked foe multinationals...". Ok we hear you

You don't set up a $300m plant and just close it up citing the reasons he gave.

They faced some ferocious challenges which may be related to the economic downturn presently facing the country.

I am also certain that the protectionist environment where import substitution rules may truly have affected their ability to source raw materials at competitive prices.

.... and you got this from an "insider" of P & G shey. Bros, it is ignoble to force a false narrative where reverse isbthe case

Always blaming the "black guy".

Just accept that you failed in business and stop blaming someone else for your failures

But Op, are they shutting the diaper production line or the whole company

But the "correct facts" is polished to play down the real reason. Why leave Agbara that I know to Ibadan? What about agglomeration economies? What about proximity to teeming Lagos Population? Lagos is the transport hub (for distribution).

I once discussed sales with one of my customers and he told me that "pamper" business is a tough one.

What about cost-management, what about proximity to materials? What about proximity to other markets while still maintaining closeness to Lagos?

Thing is, we can postulate, but the business strategy of P&G can only be determined by P&G.

That was actually my initial comment on the thread before I replied Mynd.

Hayat (Makers of Mofix) have a 100Million dollar plant in that same Agbara while P&G's own is 300M dollars. Today, Molfix has 44% and Pampers 37%.

https://nairametrics.com/stiff-competition-shuts-down-pgs-300m-diapers-plant/amp/

Could be the exact reason why P&G opt to relocate. If Lagos hub is saturated and they decide to open up new spaces. A consideration could be the discovery that they are late to the game and may want to change their approach

Hayat (makers of Mofix diapers) have a 100M USD factory in that same Agbara and they've pushed P&G to second place with their 300M USD factory. What are they getting right that P&G is not getting right?

P&G has always been in Oluyole Industrial Estate in Ibadan before coming to open the diaper line in Agbara. What is making them run back to Oluyole when their competition is making it in Agbara?

P&G got to Agbara before Hayat but Hayat has managed to corner the larger market share. Why is that so?

Forget name calling as answer the above questions.

Late to which game?
The diapers market or the Agbara location?
